The computer and electronics super geek thread
azrael replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
No need to rush my upgrade. I'll wait till things die down. But my price alert notifications are set in case they go on sale. I’d also be weary of any Nvidia card coming into stock right now. Who knows when the non-defective cards will reach shelves. Nvidia may have fixed the manufacturing defect, but they didn’t give specifics on which batch(es) are affected. Any open-box RTX 50-series is probably one of the defective cards. Honestly, the only reason 5070 are disappearing is because they are getting scalped. *Looks at ebay* Yup. This 5070 that we see now is like a high-end-of-the-silicon lottery- RTX 5060Ti Super Duper. -

As the saying goes, "AMD never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity." If they priced the 9070 at $500 (6-12 months from now it probably will), it would probably be recommended as the low-end of the mid-range cards. As it stands, all we can say is, "It exists. But the 9070 XT is the better value." -
He was listed as one of the executives as of 2019. Around 2021, he became a "special advisor". The likelihood is that when the partnership with Sankyo Co. Ltd ended in July 2020 and then partnered with Netease Inc., Kawamori probably felt it was time to leave. New bosses, new set of ventures. I mean, who hasn't left a workplace when new management comes in? 🙋♂️ The whole leadership left except for the "CEO" Michiaki Sato. (Courtesy of the Wayback Machine) 2019: 2021: I don't think there was any ill will. It was just time to go, especially if Satelight is eyeing other projects outside of anime.

The computer and electronics super geek thread

Better RT performance but still not on par with Nvidia. Better AI performance than previous gen, but still not better than Nvidia. Beats the 5070 and is parity with the 5070Ti in rasterization. FSR is....FSR. 9070 XT is the better buy vs 5070Ti. Will need to watch the video reviews for the nuances but.... Yeah, the 9070 XT may be my next card. Assuming it stays at $599 USD and stays in stock. -

We shall find out tomorrow when the RX 9070 XT review embargo lifts. You make the mistake of thinking Nvidia cares about gamers. They do not. Seriously. NVIDIA. DOES. NOT. CARE. ABOUT. GAMERS. (Nvidia FY 2024 report) -

Review embargo for the RTX 5070 has lifted. Will probably sift through the videos for the nuances but reading the written reviews... Yeah, we all knew the 5070 ain't no 4090. Hell, it's barely a 4070 Super (it's practically margin-of-error better). 🙄 In some scenarios, it can't even beat a RX 7900XT. Uses more power and runs hotter than the 4070 Super. If you want decent 1440p gaming with MFG and are coming from a 30-series or older card, sure. But at this performance/price, and only with 12GB of VRAM (and I highly doubt it will be in stock at MSRP), it's just not worth it. 🤦♂️<- This sums up the whole 50-series launch. -

Steam Hardware survey has been updated for Feb. 2025 Notable mentions this month: 32 GB RAM is now the most common configuration RTX 4060 is now the #1 GPU While 1980x1080 is still #1, 2560x1440 gain 9.92% market share -

The whole idea behind these technologies is to reduce the GPU load spent on rendering the image, especially at greater resolutions. 8.3 million pixels (i.e. 4k resolution) to render every second is quite a lot of work for a GPU. Offloading that to a secondary processing unit means the GPU is free to render instead of waiting for the app to tell the GPU what to render next. Isn't that the point of RT cores? To ray-trace in real time? That's kind of the point to all this; to render in real-time. We're not there yet, but we're getting closer. Rasterization is faster and less taxing, but it's not as accurate or as true-to-life as ray-tracing. The road not taken.... There's not many applications that actually use ray-tracing but it's slowly starting to be used more. Outside of commercial/datacenter applications, multi-GPU was a pain to support in the consumer space. Time spent trying to make multi-GPU work in the consumer-space exceeded the benefit of it. So the ROI just wasn't there as GPUs got more and more powerful (and more expensive). -
New Macross Animation Announced, to be animated by Sunrise

Seeing that we're gonna be playing 'Idol for the next 6-12 months, this thread will stay open for a week before going into hibernation. It would be interesting if there was audience participation this time around but that won't happen. *sets timer* -
Mod note: As with the general toy just-purchased toy thread, new rules will be applied here: 1). Maximum uploads of 3 pictures of a toy even if you bought two. That means if you bought High Metal VF-19 Custom Fire Valkyrie, you can post a combination of boxed and opened pics of up to three here. Anymore than three will get the post deleted. If you bought another copy of the same toy that does not constitute as a different toy and does not earn you three new photos. The moderation team considers that spamming and will be deleted. Text link to an external photo gallery if you have more than three pictures to share. 2). Image size: Height maximum per toy will now be set to 2400pixels for 3 pictures combined. That means one high resolution picture at 2400pixels or three decent resolution picture of 800pixels each. Choose your picture(s) wisely. Less is more.

With more AAA games requiring RT for even some minor scene rendering, this is where I'm in agreement with you; paying the Nvidia-tax for a 5070ti is probably going to be worth it. 🤷♂️ Even if the RX 9070s are price/performance competitive, AMD is still playing catch-up to Nvidia's RT, upscaling & frame gen performance. Nvidia learned their lesson when the 40-series came out. They will stop producing the previous version when an announcement is coming; causing the prices to go up as supply dries up on the previous versions. The 5070 is due out on March 5th....OOOOOh you mean when there will be actual stock in stores and not a paper launch.....May/June is a reasonable timeframe. The 5060 will probably show up this summer. I mean actual stock in stores. 😝 Assuming they corrected the defective GPUs at the fab already. -

AMD will never top Nvidia's RT and DLSS performance. Will it be better than AMD's previous generation? Hopefully. As for pricing...🤞The hope is to get equal or better performance at that price vs the -70-class cards. It's possible the pricing at Microcenter is true since AIBs will add a $50-100 charge on top of MSRP. Unfortunately, we can only wait and see. -

Hell, it's been reported that Kevin Feige is going to, EVENTUALLY, step down from Marvel Studios for the last few years now. Has he told HR and the execs he's actually going to do it? No. Then it's not happening, YET.- 326 replies

This is why posting a rumors/maybes/I-heard.../pre-trailer/etc on our forum may not be beneficial. The ‘Star Wars’ chief is staying on at Disney, despite a report that she’s leaving. At least for now (CNN)- 326 replies

AMD (and Nvidia before RTX) have been know to alter the price, sometimes, right up to the day before their announcements so let's not jump on this yet. -

We don't know. Disney is in a low point with their productions. They haven't had a real knock-it-out-of-the park hit since Avengers: Endgame. They've had hits, but they have not been scoring with home runs for a few years now.- 326 replies

This has been happening with video for a while. This is why many want the blu-ray discs. 'Surprised it took this long to hit books. Guess y'all better spend the money to buy the physical book.

Anybody getting Westworld (2016) vibes from those things? *looks at YT comments*. Yep I'm not the only one. It's hard to not be able to escape the "AI blitz in business"-trend. The question is what business are you in where human written nuance appears?

Mod note: We have an automotive thread for car talk. This thread is for computers and electronics. Also, there's no point in posting launch day stock. They'll all be sold out then scalped. I literally see 5070ti's on ebay with pictures of the cards taken from people's cars. -

And that's the problem. The Asus Prime (and even this might be in question) and the Gigabyte Windforce SFF are the only ones listed at MSRP. After that, you're paying WAY above the 5070ti's price/performance belt. Unless the laptop 5070ti is undervolted, a G14's chassis would probably just barely be able to keep it cool. (I think the rule of thumb is the current gen laptop Nvidia GPU is equivalent to the previous gen's desktop, performance-wise). I hear the new Ryzen AI laptop chips are actually good 👍...if you can find them... 😔🙄 -

I haven't watched any of the reviews yet but I did see Jayz2C's earlier vid about the "leaked" Microcenter and Best Buy MSRP launch prices. Yeah...🤦♂️ Don't be hold your breath 'sweetie... For price to performance...not really. Seeing as there is only 1 card that is even close to MSRP with the highest being near the 5080 FE pricing, is it really a better value? -

I'm 99% sure I wasn't the only one who could hear a voice in the back of their head screaming, "COUSIN!" and a "Yes, chef" upon seeing Ben Grimm in the kitchen. 🤭 At least they're reinforcing the "family" of Marvel's first family.- 69 replies
