Hahah, speaking about old games, I have this friend that's an incredible old school Street Fighter II gamer that kicks my ass all the time. So I took out the Xbox, which I have MAME on, and challenged him to a game of Karate Champ. I took it back to the grandfather of 1 on 1 fighting games! I had him for a while with some spinning roundhouse kicks to the head, but he caught on after a while and still managed to instill some sort of feinting game with me with lunge punches to the nuts. You ought to try the game out again with a friend.

Its like reading some website's list of top 10 actors of all time and finding names like Paul Walker, Ludacris, Hilary Duff, and Owen Wilson. It's like the people creating the poll have tunnel vision.

From what I saw, it ties up the whole story and definitively shows the tie in to the first Top O Nerae. I got shivers from watching the last 5 minutes of the show. You'll see what I mean when you see it. After watching the whole series, I do think that it definitely does NOT beat the original in any way. But it can still be enjoyed on its own merit. -
I got a question for you toy experts. I have an old original Megatron that has a problem where the chrome plated plastic on his chest and arms has started to tarnish or lose its sparkle. Any tips on restoring it back to original state if possible?

I'm so confused. I come in here looking for pictures of MP Starscream and instead see anime Barbie with her truck. What the hell?!

My favorite thing about Saint Seiya was Phoenix. I loved that he hit people so hard that they'd start hallucinating. Comedy gold any time it ended really bad for the recipient of the hit (which was every time). For example, a guy realizing he was submerged in lava and on fire after dreaming about being in a hot tub surrounded by naked women.

That reminds me about how I was watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya the other day and thought about how similar Haruhi is to Madoka. Both are loners at school, both are considered eccentric by classmates, both excel at anything they try like sports, and both are exceedingly smart. There are differences of course, but many similarities too - although Madoka would kick Haruhi's ass easily. Is that some sort of anime archetype or Japanese culture archetype? The girl that is beautiful, eccentric, smart, and physically gifted?

Going back to what someone said earlier - I would be more interested if Carpenter made a sequel to the Thing, which IMO was THE best Carpenter movie. To this day, that scene with the head walking around like a fiddler crab gives me goosebumps. And the blood testing scene is pure tension. The music is great in that it is not bombastic and just adds to the feeling of paranoia. The images of the the other exploration team at the start with their blood frozen in icicles off of their bodies was also a great piece of imagery along with the twisted mass with multiple faces they found at the site. Hell, they still have Keith David around too! Although you have to admit that a double billing of Kurt Russell and Keith David isn't likely to excite any of the douchey producers today who would rather cast "fresh" talent like Usher and that Drumline fool.

I have to agree about Windaria. I really liked the character designs in the movie. I remember feeling pretty sad for the main character at the end of the story after he returns home. The only movie that I can recall to make me feel more crappy at the end was Graveyard of the Fireflies. I heard that Streamline had edited the heck out of Windaria, but I dont know what they removed or replaced.

I think you are confused here. Rumiko Takahashi did not work on KOR. Izumi Matsumoto created KOR. Takahashi created Maison Ikkoku.

While these two shows are far far from being obscure, I find that with today's young anime fans or casual anime watchers they are like dinosaurs if they even know what they are. I love watching Urusei Yatsura and Kimagure Orange Road. Urusei Yatsura has a sense of humor that hasn't been matched in 20 years. I tried Excel Saga and other supposed heirs to the crown of wacky humor, but couldnt get into them. Kimagure Orange Road is great too, and I just love the weird take on 80s music in both productions.

Warp - a form of FTL travel that is measured in warp factors that are equivalent to how many times over the speed of light you are travelling. Warp 1 is equal to the speed of light, while Warp 2 is twice the speed of light and so on. There is no time dilation in warp. Fold - utilizing a fold generator, two points in space are folded together where the spacecraft will travel between the two points. There is a factor of time dilation, where 1 hour in fold travel equals 10 days in normal time. Subspace - an extra dimension underlying the normal universe where travelling between two points is translated differently than in the real universe. Most of the time, when some form of FTL is discussed, subspace is the medium by which a spacecraft will travel avoiding regular physics. Hyperspace - In Star Wars, this is different than subspace and more like Star Trek in that a vessel in hyperspeed will not travel through subspace, but will traverse in the real universe. Hyperspace travel is through routes that have been cleared, since blind hyperspace travel will result in vessels running into planets, suns, asteroids, etc. In Gunbuster, there are two methods of travelling, which is regular acceleration, which the closer to light speed, the higher the time dilation due to real physics. Then there is their warp, which uses the Tanhauser gate and etc to fold two points while the vessel travels the shortened distance between the two points in subspace with there being time dilation effects as well. I hope that helps. -

Man, I envy Spatula. I wish I could relive that first time I watched Gunbuster. It made my jaw drop by the last episode as it had totally surpassed any expectations I had. Note that I was watching it along with Dangioh which was released by US Renditions at the same time in the early 90s, which was more what I was expecting. -
Wow, am I late to this thread? Way back in November 1994 when I rented the first tape off of some mom and pop Japanese video store that was inside of the local Yaohan (now Mitsuwa), I was really excited to get home and check it out. Now these tapes were recorded off of Japanese TV as the store catered in taping live shows and renting them out here, so the tape was pretty hard to find in all the mass of plain labeled VHS tapes with kanji and katakana. Anyways to make a long story short, I rented every tape (which had one month's worth of episodes, so 4) every month, and every time I tried to get my friends into it with me. I anxiously waited every month for a tape thinking that the story would drastically change into something I liked. After watching the whole series, I sat there confused. I wanted so much to like it, but couldn't stand it. My friends gave up after I showed them just one episode, and that episode was IMO the best (as I was trying to hook them) which was the attack on the Protodevlin home planet. They thought I was sick in the head for watching all 49 episodes. I think the best thing about renting those tapes were the hilarious Japanese commercials.

IMDB lists Tyrese as in this movie. So great, we can expect him to want to trick out his transforming "whip" with big chrome "dubs" with "tight" hydros, a bumpin system, purple and lime green paint scheme along with a "blinging" Gucci leather interior. I mean he represented some sick rides in Baby Boy and 2 Fast 2 Furious.

I don't even know how to react to that picture. It looks like Dix Neuf without all his armor shed to his organic skin. It's screaming to me "End of Evangelion". I don't know if I like that feeling. -
Thanks for the response, Mr. March. Oh well, the worst that Mann could ever direct will still come out tasting like mana from heaven when in comparison to real dreck like an Uwe Boll or Paul W.S. Anderson flick.
-
Hey Mr. March, thanks for the review! I'm wondering, how would you rate this film among Mann's previous works? I'm a fan of Mann's stuff, so I'd be curious about where you would rank it as considering that you seem to put more balanced thought into things and seem immune to the knee-jerk fanboyism that some people bring into reviews on here about toys, movies, etc.

Patlabor 2 The Movie Limited Collector's Edition

Bingo. Mr. March always seems to say what I am thinking, but with better vocubulary and less slurring. -
I can't believe there are actually people that liked the dub version and soundtrack. I watched the original way back in the day and when I watched the Manga dub, I was sick to my stomach. They had ripped out the dramatic soundtrack and replaced it with some rock soundtrack that I felt didn't ring true to the scenes especially during the Ryu vs. Ken scenes at the end. It would have been similar to reediting the scene in Return of the Jedi with Vader vs. Luke with some emo punk crap.

The sub for 5 is out already. 6 hasn't been released in Japan yet. -
I decided to check this anime out after reading about it in this thread and man, I haven't laughed this hard about anime since Urusei Yatsura. That first episode caught me off guard.
