  1. SO far as I can tell, there are no U.S. UMD's for sale at this time through retail. The first batch of movies is showed a release date of April 19, 2005 according to Amazon.com, there are only like five titles due otu then, xXx, Once Upon a time in Mexico, Hellboy and some other stuff. I read that a second batch of like 12 titles was due out in a month or two after that. I read that Lion's Gate and Disney had both penned deals with Sony to release movies on UMD so we will probably be seeing some more title announcements in the next few weeks.
  2. UnclemonkeybutterOMGl33tBBq~! that rocks the house I gotta find a hotspot and fiddle with mine tomorrow Awesome man!
  3. I grabbed this off the 1up message boards, no further explanation or links did I see, if I find out more or get out to a local Hotspot to test it I will let you know. Anyhow, here is the messageboard post I copied: PSP WEB PORTAL If you have a PSP, set your Primary DNS server to 67.171.70.72 -- I've got a portal of sorts up. Set your secondary DNS to your router so if my IP changes or my machine goes down, you'll still be able to access the internet. Then just fire up Wipeout and head to the downloads section, you should see this: Those without a PSP, you can still check it out here. Update: I've added a URL bar to the bottom so you can type in a URL and go wherever you want. Enjoy. Another Update: All links including launching from the URL bar now use php to put a "toolbar" across the top so you can enter new URLs without returning to the portal. Thanks to MomDad for that. 4. I totally agree about recordable UMD's, they need to get on that, apparently they are paranoid about people having a portable piracy device if they do it, at least that is the latest excuse I have heard for them refusing to allow the format to be useful I too still have my both of my launch PS2's, Japanese and American and both have logged hundreds if not thousands of hours of use over the years, both work fine. I know many people have had them crap out, but so far I have had really good luck with my Playstations. I gave my original 1st generation PS1 to my nephew about a year and a half ago, when I talked to him on easter he said it still worked. I wonder about the system life myself, but since I was investing 270 bucks in a portable system I bought the extended, "Smash it with a hammer and we will still replace it" warranty from EB, so I know I will get at least 2 years out of it Anyhow, I don't own Sony stock or anything, I could care less if anyone else buys one I guess. I am glad I have mine, I have had so much fun just playing around with the features that the 25+ hours I have spent actually playing extremely fun games on it seem like icing on the cake Have any of you guys seen this stuff about internet browsing on it through Wipeout Pure? I got a little walkthrough I need to try out. Supposedly you can go through the update feature in Wipeout Pure and browse the net, message boards and stuff.
  5. Dead pixels are a fact of life with LCD screens, occasionally you are going to get them. I bought 2 PSP's, one for myself and one for my brother, niether of them have any QC issues so far, and we have both logged over 30 hours play time since last thursday. All I can tell you , is from personal experience, I have had a magnificent experience with the PSP so far. I have ripped a few cool DVD videos, loaded up some family photos and a few MP3's to show off it's capabilities to my friends and everyone I have shown agrees that it is a truly magnificent device. If you are waiting around because some other poeple have had annoying dead pixels, you might as well wait until the next screen technology comes out, because every mass amrketted product with LCD screens has units with dead pixels. I have yet to hear of anyone who bought a PSP and tried to return it due to troublesome dead pixels only to be refused the right to an exchange or refund. the most recent cool idea I read for using the PSP is to read Scanslated manga and novels. I am going to snag the software tonight and try to load my Berserk Scans onto my PSP, that would be a really cool thing to be able to carry around
  6. Target stores were selling the system bundle by itself. After I got home with mine and showed my brother what it could do we ran right out the door and picked one up for him. As far as the article, I don't have permission to re-post it, but I think so long as I give credit where it is due, This is from the 1up.com website, visit www.1up.com and check out thier PSP section here is a link to the article that I pulled the walkthrough from: PSP DVD to MPeG4 walkthrough Here's a quick rundown on getting that favorite DVD video running on your PSP 1. You're going to need your video files in MPEG4 file format for the PSP to read. With the proper instructions (the PSP manual isn't much help), you'll be ripping DVDs like a pro. Start by choosing the DVD you want to rip and putting it into your computer's DVD drive. 2. Do a quick Google search, download the free DVD Decrypter program, and open it up. 3. Click the Mode tab, scroll down and select IFO. 4. Now click the Tools tab, select IFO Mode and make sure the option File Splitting is set to "None." 5. Click OK, under the Input window click the movie. 6. Now select the Stream Processing tab, enable Stream Processing, and select your video. 7. You're now ready to start ripping. Click that big DVD disc to begin the processing of ripping the DVD into a file stored on your hard drive. 8. Now with the video file on your HD, you have a variety of programs at your disposal which will help you convert the file into proper formatting for PSP viewing. A quick Google search of 3GP Converter, iPSP, or the new PSP Video 9 will yield programs you can use to convert that ripped video file. 9. For Mac users, give iPSP a shot. And for PC users not comfortable with talk of bitrates and encoding will enjoy PSP Video 9's user-friendly interface. 10. Now connect your PSP using a USB 2.0 cable and click the "USB Connectivity" option in the PSP's main menu. This will allow you to browse the Memory Stick Duo inserted into your PSP. 11. Be careful where you place the video file on the Memory Stick. Unlike music and picture files, your video files need to be placed outside of the "PSP" folder. Create a folder called "MP_ROOT" and inside that folder create another folder named "100MNV01." That is the folder you need to copy your encoded video files to. 12. Be careful how your video files have been named. Programs like iPSP will properly name your video files automatically. Naming your MP4 files "24_Season_3.MP4" won't work. The files need to be named like this: "M4V00000.MP4"; you can change the numbers "00000" to fit your preference (like "M4V00027.MP4"). 13. You're done! If you get stuck on any of the above steps, scour internet message boards for help. Hundreds of philanthropic techies will be explaining the above steps on forums come March 24, and thousands of others will be pleading for their help. I followed those directions a had absolutely no problems, the DVD Decrypter program and the PSP Video 9 program are all you need and are free where as the 3G and IPSP were both software for sale. I will be sending a donations to the free ware sites, because that stuff literaly made my night people this afternoon, because that software package did exactly what I needed it to do and was very easy to use.
  7. I grabbed that a couple hours ago really handy, and free!, I have put my favoraite music videos, an album's worth of songs and a dozen pictures and cool Jpegs on my PSP to show the thing off to friends. I am totally entralled with this thing There is a really nice walkthrough for converting DVD's to PSP right from downloading the programs to actually burning the discs over at 1up.com It took me all of ten minutes from DLing the software to copying my first videos onto my memory stick
  8. My box was sealed with clear transparent tape, not easy to remove without marring the box, so it should be obvious if someone took the tape off. If there was no tape and no mark I suspect it was just not sealed at the factory. The Battery came with a short charge, enough to set up the system and watch the Demo disc before I plugged it in. There was no plastic film over the screen, but the way the thing is configured they almost would have had to put protective film over the entire unit to keep it from getting fingerprints. That sort of leads back to yrou fear of tampering. When you pulled it out of the box, it shoudl have been instantly apparent to you if it had been tampered with, because unless they wore latex gloves there would be fingerprints all over it I went and showed mine to my brother and a few friends after work, Wipeout Pure and Spiderman just sold three more PSP's This thing is so rad!
  9. I just picked mine up an hour ago at EB here in Chattanooga, and I have to say that is it bar none the neatest piece of handheld electronic gadgetry I have ever had the pleasure of touching. Wipeout Pure is crisp and beautiful, I have a meeting, but I will throw in Twisted Metal, Ridge Racer and MG after lunch.
  10. All time favoraite band, without question, doubt or a second thought: Tool Damn close second would be Alice in Chains I am a metal head with some bizzaro leanings. Lately I am listening to a lot of Mastodon, High on Fire, Isis, The Melvins, Alexisonfire, Testament, Metallica, Moby, Chemical Brothers, Faith No More, Converge, Nine Ince Nails, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Prong, Slayer, Brujeria, Therapy?, Rage Against the Machine, older Prodigy records. So metal and techno, I am a mess
  11. Sony has finally updated their U.S. Site with PSP data: Official Sony PSP data It looks like some games will offer a "Share" feature that lates more than one person play a game using a single Copy of the game, I didn't see a list of titles posted though. Man, I am dying to get my hands on mine I went ahead and bought Wipeout (I have loved them all so far, by far my favoraite racing games, Twisted Metal (I was the king of TM2, mmmm destructive goodness, Metal Gear Acid (Figured I would give it a try even though card games aren't my thing normally. I will probably snag a copy of ridge racer, Hot Shots is a few months off still I think, but I have a copy reserved anyhow. Can't.....Wait.......Till.......Thursday....
  12. I would absolutely spend the extra 30 dollars for the larger size kit that would look good next to any of my Valks, 1/72 through 1/48 Bring it on is my vote!
  13. My personal opinion on the matter is that scale variance minutia isn't really that important to me. It seems to me that the scale varied in the show due to animation errors, and artistic interperetation for battle scenes, likewise, as shown in the varous scale diagrams posted there are some minor inconsistencies between the size of the pods and the pilotspace within them. If the Cap'n wants to make the model to a scale he thinks is right for a potential future pilot figure, by God, I am more than happy to have a slightly larger battle pod. I don't think the rationale behind the size variance is off the wall, going off average pilot size, seems perfectly reasonable to me. Hell, for purists and mathematicians who like the charts better than certain frames of the animation you can call it 1/72, 1/60, 1/48 or 1/63 and 2.1341248763% scale for all I care Tangent rambling aside, I am excited about this kit!
  14. Well EB had Gran Tourismo PSP listed as shipping on March 29 on their website last week, now it has vanished. As far as teh street dates thing goes, EBgames may have it listed as a ship date of the 15th, but in store release dates, as I am sure you know, are almost universally on Tuesday so... Anyhow, the EB clerk should have been up to speed on the release at least having some clue what they were shipping and when, seeing as how it is going to way-lay them next week, I figured they would be trying to get as many transactions done early as possible to spread out some of the rush. At any rate, no biggie, just sharing the fact that EB in my neighborhood didn't have the games for distribution and have no idea what the actual release date for Gran Tourismo PSP is Not like it matters, I can't play em for a week anyhow.
  15. Yeah but Yamato still has a section on their website with pictures of the VF-0S ty on it, I think there is a much higher probability of the VF-0S materializing than some of our other hopefuls.
  16. I absolutely have my hate on for 99% of third party accessories from memory cards to controllers, companies like Mad Catz and Pelican have been selling defective trash that isn't worth the plastic it is pressed out of for too long. Save your money and buy another game, put your PSP or DS or whatver in a backpack. Most of these carrying cases and custom boxes are overpriced, uneccessary fluff. Just my opinion on accessories. I went down to my EB at lunch, they didn't have their 15th releases in stock and the girl at the counter was utterly confused when I asked about release dates. Furthermore, she said that EB doesn't have Gran Tourismo for PSP in their pre-sell database so she couldn't accept my game reservation. What a depressing trip, thank goodness the best milkshakes in Chattanooga were on my way back to the office.
  17. I have a PS and five games paid for. I wonder if they are going to have me come down to EB tomorrow to pick up my games to be released on the 15th with the system still not due for another week. That will be a long week of instruction manual and small disc size admiration
  18. I can't remember where I read the article yesterday, if I find it I will post a link, but Nintendo is doing a special offer, if you put down a ten dollar deposit on the new zelda game you will get a free disk that is the entire Windwaker game with the new upgraded cool looking Link in place of cartoony Link. Kinda neat special offer I think. - Edit Well wait a minute, I just got PwnxxoredBBQ by the EGM April fools joke for 2005 I think. Oh well It seemed so plausible, oh well, color me naive ;p
  19. You already got me down for one, but I think I need to go ahead and commit to a second Regult kit before they get pre-sold out So, please make that 2 for Ghadrack And if you get around on the Launch Vehicle I am still in for one of those! You guys are a true asset to the Macross fan community, keep up the good work.
  20. Not fair Ngage is a bunch of crap thrown on a cell phone. The PSP is a pretty high resolution handheld video game system/multimedia device that could have some of these mundane functions added in to make it an all in one device that actually looks good.
  21. Absolutely, that is why I am kind of frustrated with them. I love the MD format by the way, I would jump on the new Hi-MD if I didn't know they will make it patently difficult to utilize to it's full potential. If they would just allow people to use the damn machines they make to their full capability we would have some spectacular stuff, but Sony and their different divisions spend so much time trying to limit the functions of their stuff so as not to interfere with the sales arms of their other wings, riht now they could be selling a handheld device in the form of the PSP that is your Cell phone, Digital Camera, Walkman, PDA, Portable Game System, Portable movie player (With miniRCA jacks so you could use it for your home or travel theatre) and psuedo-laptop. blehhhhh
  22. I am in. Regult! Regult! Regult! Once things get a little closer to reality I will more than likely want 2 of these. Go Go Captain America!
  23. Well, I am simply thinking of economy up front, in a year or two, the price of memory sticks may be so low that it is convenient to have a couple, but the price of discs should be just a dollar or two each, more than CD's, but far, far less than memory sticks. Anyhow, this is all just blabbering on my part because Sony will probably have hard-wired the PSP to self destruct if you find a way to make it more useful than they want it to be because they are trying very hard to take marketshare in the MP3 player market right now
  24. Yeah but releasing a burner doesn't violate the secure digital meduim act, since most recorders and players have built in coders that scramble signal (Try recording a DVD onto a video tape ) but people have to find their own way around it. I am saying if they released a UMD recording unit though that it would make the medium very attractive, and it might convinve people to buy a PSP and get in to the UMD format, all it takes is a small revolution to start major sales. The thing is, they have historically had access to major technological advances but they have shot themsleves in the nuts time after time (Betamax, Minidisc to name a few) by tyrying to horde the technology and be the universal owner and sole provider, when the market knows that this is a pitfall that it can not afford. Think about it, if sony sold a UMD recorder and you could rip your CD's onto a UMD and carry it around like an MP3player, (Without having to pay for 2 or 3 Duo cards) wouldn't that make the PSP a more handy and cool device? Imagine if you could rip a few of your favoraite movies on to UMD and have your whole CD collection, five or ten of your favoraite movies along with five or six good video games and a universal player all in a walkman sized sack? Cripes, that is a revolution in modern micro media, but the stingey, greedy screw balls, won't let that happen until some other company usurps their technology, but by then, too little too late as always.
  25. Hola gents I posted a couple months ago, but I buried the most important question I had in a bunch of AWB sunset stuff and it got lost, but here goes... Do any of you guys have personal experience with the Armalite AR-10 family of rifles : Armalite Catalog I have been contemplating picking up an AR-10 model A4 carbine, I was hoping to hear from some people that have had a chance to fire one that aren't Armalite message board posters who are obviously biased. I am looking for a new .308 rifle the Armalites seem to have a pretty good reputation, although they are a bit pricey but I want a good serviceable rifle that will stand the test of time if maintained. Anyhow, thoughts on the Ar-10 series or any competitors would be appreciated while I am still doing my homework for the impending purchase. Thanks in advance.
