Really? That's odd, I could've sworn otherwise... but OK, that is good news then!

OK, thanks. Funny, I don't remember there being a similar disclaimer on, say, the Sky Angels book, but then, I guess it isn't required. I guess I'm just baffled by the decision to put it there at all.

(This was very briefly discussed in the Current Anime thread, but since he is such a big name, I figured he deserved his own thread). Another of the greats has left us. Dezaki is survived by his older brother, Satoshi (who incidentally, is also an animator and founded the studio "Magic Bus"). Dezaki-sensei was right there at the very start of the TV animation industry in the early 60s, working on Astroboy over at Mushi Productions. Eventually he became director of Ashita no Joe, and had a string of hits under his belt during the 70s, like Ace o Nerae/ Aim for the Ace, Versailles no Bara / Rose of Versailles, Ie naki ko / The Boy without a Home, Takarajima / Treasure Island, Moomin, Ganba no bouken / Adventure of Gamba, etc. Then of course, there's the Tokyo Movie Shinsha period, highlighted by his work on Lupin III and Space Adventure Cobra. He was also co-founder of Madhouse Studio. Oh, and he worked on Mighty Orbots, The Bionic Six and Visionaries to boot. From what I heard on Monday, he had just established a new animation studio only a few days ago. At 67, he was gone far to soon, and his passing serves as a reminder of how great, yet how fragile the minds which created this industry are, and is a wake-up call to have the rich history of Japanese animation archived properly as soon as possible. EDIT -- I suppose I ought to put a couple of reference links here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osamu_Dezaki http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%87%BA%E5%B4%8E%E7%B5%B1 (JP) http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2011-04-17/anime-director-osamu-dezaki-passes-away

I don't own the book so I can't judge... however -- and in no way am I making a jab at your translating skills -- is there a possibility that the disclaimer is a very general one, to the effect of "The details given in this book are fictional and are not accounts of existing real-world aircraft/events, etc.", rather than "The details in this book are not canon to the chronology of Macross animation works"? Basically, is it a case of the book just coming out and saying "It's a cartoon!"? Forgive me if that's a stupid/insulting question, I do actually intend it sincerely, not sarcastically. But hey, it is the newbie thread after all. Either way, I agree.

I had to, it was dozens of pages long. Would've driven me insane otherwise. I'll hazard a guess at the summary, though: "Is it canon?? It's not canon!! Canon, CANON!" Something like that? Since this is a newbie thread, it's best to keep things simple. The worst thing to do is allow the hardcore people to drive away new guys.

The hand thing on the 19 actually bothered me quite a bit for a while, not just because it's coloured wrong -- it seems to me like it's actually molded wrong. Those red grills on the knuckles aren't even on the toy, as far as I could tell, so it wouldn't be just a case of re-painting it. That said, I've learned to live with it. The 1/144 kit didn't have them, either (it just used a stock Gundam set of parts for fists and elbow joints, etc).

What on Earth do you find wrong with the designs?? Personally (and I stress this), I think they're the best-looking character designs in a whole decade of Japanese animation, perhaps two. I can't remember when I last saw an anime with such appealing characters.- 3606 replies

A and B only, as far as I understand. Yeah, it's the same molding as the toy, only unassembled, hence the "kit" lingo. Scenario C, a different kit made from brand new tooling/molding, has not been reported as far as I know, and is unlikely.

Found it: http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=33864&view=findpost&p=853682 It WAS in the VF-19 Variable Master File book, and they ARE guns (Mauler), after all.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v3.0
Renato replied to wolfx's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Yeah, Summer Wars is OK, not bad at all. Gui, thanks again for all the info on the Space Adventure Cobra animations, I didn't realize there was another TV show broadcast last year. I checked the DVD I had, and you're right, it is "The Psychogun" OVA. Anyway, here's the "Cobra: Best Selection" DVD I picked up yesterday. 4 episodes of the old TV show, 4 of the new one, and all for 1000 yen -- not bad at all. Gonna make my way through these over the next couple of weeks. -
As with the VF-19kai recently, it seems that random Hong Kong blogs get the scoops on pricing details before Yamato officially announces them on their site. It's a bit of a problem, because I'm always a little weary of third-, fourth-hand news -- especially in this case where we don't even know for sure if this is the price for the entire kit or not. I will however stress once again that it has been reported, most recently in Model Graphix magazine, that there will be a release of a KIT VERSION OF THE 1/3000 MACROSS and that IT WILL BE CHEAPER than the fully-built one, and also that it WILL INCLUDE DECALS, PHOTO-ETCHED PARTS, etc. However, I await for 100% full confirmation that that is what this blog is referring to in its price announcement. I would say the likelihood is extremely high, though. As for the possibility of just a set of PE parts, decals and extra "damaged" main guns without the main body, yeah, I heard rumours and whisperings but who knows for sure. Except Yamato, and its their secrecy that is the problem. If this does turn out to be the real price, well, as I mentioned before, I dunno about you guys, but I'm probably just going to be buying this kit-version instead of the pre-built one. It's not as if the pre-built one had many paint-applications anyway. EDIT -- I suddenly find myself more excited for this than the Fire Valk.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know there were so many OVAs! OK, I will have to re-check, I have the DVD of the first episode of one of the new ones, I'm just not sure which one now. And yeah, it REALLY sucks about Dezaki, I literally just heard about it earlier this afternoon. He was in hospital a while back last year, but he was much better this year, and it seems only a few weeks ago he had established a brand new studio, but now he's gone all of a sudden. I was in a Family Mart convenience store shortly after I heard the news and by sheer coincidence noticed a lone "Best of Cobra" DVD so I picked it up, I guess it's kind of a way to pay my respects. RIP Dezaki-san. Seems all the greats are leaving us behind. -
Yeah, I believe this was a long-running mystery which was clarified a few years ago by some newly-published annotated lineart. However, I can't remember where that was! I think it was in the Macross Plus remastered DVD set. Anyway, when I find it again, I will post what it says, I don't remember exactly.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v3.0

Yeah, Orguss 02 is OK. My point was that they all came out during a period of sequelitis epidemic. As for Megazone, Part II was the end!! What more closure could you have wanted?? It's like those unwanted sequels that tell what happened after the original Votoms TV series' ending. There's no more drama in the endings to those sequels than in those of the originals. Actually, I guess the same could be said of Orguss 02. -

Cobra The Animation is the one I am talking about... I don't think that's from 2010, though. It's older, probably from 2007 or 2008, I have to check. I remember I first saw it advertised in my favourite record shop in Kyoto, and that closed down two or three years ago. Anyway, I found the first episode quite lacking and I didn't like the CG at all. I watched a little of episode 2 today, however, and it was OK. But yeah, the old TV show is the best by far. -
It's an illutration by Tomotake Kinoshita for Macross Chronicle.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v3.0
Renato replied to wolfx's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Yeah, TV version. It's so crazy and over-the-top, without becoming all ridiculously SD-like, etc. The movie was OK, but the tone is kind of too serious. And I saw the first episode of the new OVA series they brought out a couple of years ago for the 30th anniversary... I didn't find it that great, to be honest. I will probably get back to it later, though. It's a real shame that the voice actor passed away a few months ago -- in fact, his funeral happened to be on the same day that I was watching an interview with him on the OVA DVD, and I didn't know until it was on the news the next morning. Freaky stuff. EDIT - As for Megazone... Part III is really just another of those cash-in sequels that were all the rage in the 90s, like Orguss 02, Macross II, etc. Aramaki really knows how to take something awesome and make it mediocre. -

What did you think of Megazone? It's quite controversial amongst anime fans. I personally love I and II but don't care for III. Meanwhile, I'm an old-schooler for life, so currently I'm watching Mellowlink, SPT Layzner and Space Cobra. And yes, they all kick ass. EDITED for the BOLDING, yo. -

I know. At LONG LAST Hasegawa moves on to the VF-11, but it is too late to include the Box Art in Tenjin's Valkyries Second book. Argh. I always felt that this was something that was really missing from those books. Never mind, though, I'm sure Hasegawa will milk this mold for all it's worth and even more -- perhaps even enough to fill a third Tenjin book!
-
Well, it's been reported that the kit is going to be more affordable, but of course, it's all relative. I really don't like the fact that both this and the VF-19 are coming in May... Nice of them to include glow-in-the-dark decals, there.
