But the Japanese specify the years with the word "jidai", like I described, not the word "seiki". Which would mean that actually, whether you realize it or not, you are taking issue not with the translation, but with the original choice of terminology in the source material itself. At the end of the day, they do say "uchuu seiki", where they SHOULD be saying "uchuu jidai". Right? Well, yeah, OK. I've never seen the show in anything other than Japanese, but I thought it was more evocative of the Trojan horse, simply because of the fact that there were people inside of it. I concede that its more of an interpretative thing, though I never thought of it as a rocking horse specifically...

"Uchuu" can be translated as both "space" and "universe", "seiki" literally does mean "century" (as in Chou jikuu seiki Orguss -- Super Dimension Century Orguss); "era", on the other hand, would be "jidai". Thus, I would say Universal Century is accurate enough, and by no means "wrong". As for your other examples, I still think that the translation in European and Latin American broadcasts are much closer to the source material than adaptations tailored for the US market. In particular Tokyo Movie Shinsha productions, of which you mention "Lady Oscar" (The Rose of Versailles), are very much protected from befalling the same fate as Macross and Gatchaman because the parent company retains virtually all IP control, so as far as I know, TMS only allow minor changes as necessities for localization. The other examples you cited I cannot speak for with the same confidence, but from what I have seen are basically along the same lines.

I know he is. That is why I blame Animeigo.

I just checked the episode on Youtube, and you're right, it's not on there. It seems it was one of the scenes that was cut from the original, so I guess Gubaba must have made a mistake. It is supposed to happen after the big mid-air catch action scene with the VF-1D in the second episode. But his point still stands, I can give you the example of episode 5 "Transformation" which we spoke about in the MW podcast, when Minmei says to Rick "Well, you said you wanted to destroy the city, how'd you like it?" and what Rick should have replied, instead of "but I never expected anything to happen," was "What the hell are you talking about, I never said that. You are confusing me with Hikaru Ichijo!" Because Minmei's line is a reference to an earlier scene in the episode which WAS replaced with different dialogue. So obviously they were translating from the original Japanese scripts then changing some things around as they saw fit -- but perhaps didn't have time to check if the changes were consistent with the rest of the dialogue.

What I said was that the disappointment with RT and HG should be a major push factor in getting involved in the active Macross fan community. That in itself does not go against the "don't just come here to talk about RT" rule. I would very much like to see Juan and every one else enjoy immersing themselves in the Macross fandom, having jumped ship from the sinking wreck of Captain Yune's USS VeryTech. There's no down side to that (except an unwanted "wallet diet" effect.. ). Tokuma Shoten took care of that decades ago. Wait wait wait wait..... WHAT?

Argh, not again. The curse of Animeigo's dodgy transcripts lives on..... It's LOVELY MINMAY, not HAPPY MINMAY. Sorry dude..

Hey there, I hope you stick around on MW, we have lots of things going on over on this side of the playground. Let your disillusionment with HG and the RT brand be the springboard that dives you to the wonderful world of Macross. And I promise to try to be extra nice to you because I think we share the same surname

But that implies that people still read comics, just on a different format.

Has anyone considered making a fan made Macross Game?
Renato replied to leading edge's topic in Games
I found this: http://www.kongregate.com/labs Er, and.... THIS: Hey, the Dragon II is in it -
Thanks everyone for the feedback; expect more of these to come. I always find it hilarious that so many of the staff and fans berate the show because of episodes like the one with Millia's wedding and First Contact, but at the end of the day they love it because it's all part of its charm. The issue with the strange text formatting is intriguing, though. I have posted in the authors' forum to see if this can be solved somehow. EDIT -- Oh, one thing I didn't clarify and I just noticed: the note explaining the role of the "seisaku-shinkou" is mine, so it should be considered part of the "notes by the translator" instead of part of the translated text. The explanation is not in the original. My bad.

Yamato 1/60 VF-17 Nightmare Diamond Force
Renato replied to charger69's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
It's funny, just the other day the guy who made that video (I don't actually know him) sent me a message on Youtube telling me about how I should fix the VF-17 with silicon... I was baffled and didn't bother responding. Now he's made a video and I'm still no more enlightened... -
Technically it appears in Macross Dynamite 7 I always thought the Legioss and the VF-17 were similar, at least in terms of transformation.

That's the point: I figure that if they could do that, it would not be an exclusive. Hence -- demand is far from overwhelming.

Well, I would say that in that respect, Robotech is much more faithful to real-life Japanese idol phenomena than Macross ever was. Mari Iijima actually having talent forever impeded her from providing an accurate portrayal of Japanese pop performer idols. Thank God for Reba West. I wonder if she is available to do the dub for the upcoming AKB48 anime by Kawamori, to give it an air of authenticity. And if you think I'm kidding.... ah, google it, I'm not so evil as to embed that stuff here.

Heh. You made me think of a joke. Why are Bayformer fans also fans of Otis Redding? Because they like "Sittin' on the d*ck of the Bay". Alas, I kid. It's the people who are serious that I fear...

Thanks for the pic! Gotta go a LITTLE off-topic here just to say what a good-humoured company Yamato is. In the text, in brackets you see the word アラサー coming after "30th Anniversary". Romanized, this reads "Arasaa". This is actually quite a new word in Japanese society which is taken from a truncation of "Araundo Saatii" -- "Around Thirty". As some of you may know, there is a Kon-katsu phenomenon here in Japan which has its roots in the desperation of women feeling pressured to get married "around thirty". Basically, they're equating the Macross franchise as a woman who should be thinking of settling down. Anyway, all of this is part of the reason why I think the Yamato guys are so great. They're not just a company making kick-ass toys -- they have a cynical, crazy sense of humour, even in official settings such as these.
