Will DYRL movie do better if shown in the States

How in the world do they expect anime films to bring in a decent amount of box office sales when they're given the limited releases that have been getting for years? Appleseed was released in what, maybe 100 theaters instead of the thousands of theaters in the US? Yeah, but so was Spirited Away. In fact I'm doing research on the ever-widening gap between the mainstream and subculture. One of the reasons for these limited releases is that a general release would be suicide because, put simply, nobody would go and see an animated film with elements different to those which they are used to. In effect, audiences' brains have been "Disneyfied", to put it crudely. Even the darker-than-average Iron Giant did not fare well at the box office, though the adults who have seen it hold it in high regard. Audiences have certain expectations of an animated film, and it is the business of distributors and studios to simply fulfill that, not to make them appreciate something they have no interest in. Yesterday and today this very topic came up, if you want to see the outline of my argument, I can post it, but it is three A4 pages long. On a slightly related note, I also have a transcript of a recent interview session with a couple of MW members, in which similar discussions appear. On second thoughts, I may just put it all on geocities or something. -
ABOOUT BLOODY TIME!! If I don't see some content worth a four-year delay though, I'll be majorly pissed off.

I'm an advocate of the copying of out-of-print unavailable products. The Macross DVDs are now out of print, unavailable products, both in the US and Japan.

Sorry? At no point did Hasbro or Takara officially reveal Dead End's mold was Sunstreaker, nor were there any package pics of him called Sunstreaker. The only reason we know he was originally Sunstreaker (besides the head) was that old test shot with the molded 'bot symbol. This Wheeljack is way ahead of that. Oficially, Dead End stole Sunstreaker's BT body. That is why he looks like him. You would have thought that they would have at least taken the time to change his head. Especially since the raised Autobot insignia was removed. I have two Dead Ends on the way. (Local stores never got them in) One is being repainted back into Sunstreaker, the other is gettting his "ears" removed, and new head details added, so that he no longer looks like Sunstreaker. Again, officially, at no point did Hasbro or Takara refer to this as being the mold for BT Sunstreaker. Yes, its obvious that it was meant to be Sunstreaker initially, as Swindle was meant to be Trailbreaker, but officially, they never referred to either as such because fans bitched and wanted Decepticons. The Dead End bio story was written by Hirofumi Ichikawa - a fan and illustraitor at Takara. He even made references to GI Joe characters, so its not exactly an official explanation from either company, is it? My issue with the first quote was the wording appears to suggest that while this Wheeljack was retooled with WJ's head, has the name Wheeljack on his packaging and license plate, he's probably going to end up with another name like Dead End. GF Guardshell and Gaskett are out http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/thread65997.html I'm sorry that my attempt at humor got your undies in a bunch. I simply used the old Sunstreaker debate in my post to add some tension before the reader clicked the thread to see that the obvious name of Wheeljack is in fact the production name. I made absolutely no statement that the official name for Deadend was EVER Sunstreaker nor did I state, or imply, that the official name for Wheeljack will change. Note that my first sentence does not mention the name, it simply refers to the mold that looks like Wheeljack (thus building dramatic tension) much like the Deadend testshots looked like Sunstreaker. Again, I am sorry that my attempt at humor has resulted in a tirade against longtime members of this community. What "humour"? What "tirade"? -
I have found a copy of the domestic (Japan) release of the Super Space Fortress dub VHS in a rental shop. The UK copy I own by Kiseki (entitled "Clash of the Bionoids" -- yet uncut) credits Tatsunoko and Shougakukan at the end, I believe. I will compare this one, (the packaging included). However, I assume it will be the same. As for who actually produced the dub, I imagine Toho did it themselves using the same actors and studio that they used to produce the dubs for their Godzilla movies at the time. Compare them next time. They sound very alike. However, Shougakukan is also involved in Godzilla distribution rights, so....

Interesting!!! I'm really looking forward to see this complete. I noticed that OP has his arms tucked in like in cab mode?? ~Tico yeah originma ultra magnus transformed liek that Pardon my ignorance... but what is originma ultra magnus? ~Tico I think he meant to type "original" Ultra Magnus. Oh, and the Blitzwing re-issue is out. In real life it looks a bit better than I expected. I don't think I'll be getting it, though. -
Heheheh. Protocultureshock, you are complaining about the over-emphasis on LOVE in a movie called.... "DO YOU REMEMBER LOVE"!!!!

I still have the silver and gold transforming rocks! I had the silver one. *sigh...*

Ok, here's a larger scan of the text. Graham Yeah, it just says "VF-XII FOR OPENING -- DOUBLE STEALTH MOTHERSHIP CV-565" Doesn't have a name. Edit -- The "opening" part refers to the "opening sequence". Oh and thanks again, Graham! -
Hehe. Still doesn't look like a real bike. I remember I had the standard size version of that toy. I wonder where it went. Actually, I remember owning the huge ass base ship thing that transformed into an AT-AT ripoff, with things like "Cafeterias" inside. For some reason, it all seemed perfectly normal to me at the time.

You know, since it was gonna be the first episode, I thought, what the hell, I'll be home that night, so I'll watch the damn thing. I still managed to bloody miss it!! I dunno what happened, time just flew by. -
OK, I know next to nothing about this "Bottoms" show, but I have heard that the red shoulder version of the Scopedog has been released and it is a TRU exclusive. (PS: Yes, I know the real name of the show, I just wanted to be in line with the cheerfully gay tone of this thread. )

Suite Macross? Not sure about that one, though it does ring a bell... Show me the cover. Is it the one with Misa in the Protoculture ruins? Or are you talking about the standard movie soundtrack? (The one with a close-up of Minmay's face on the cover)
-
How long is the soundtrack? From watching the show, I was disapointed by it. While Kanno's quality is as good as ever, there was a distinct lack of quantity. Yes. Except, Yoko Kanno has nothing to do with the soundtrack. It's mostly done by Tsuchie, Force of Nature, Nujabes and Fat Jon.

OK, here's the only lineart pic I have of the ship that the VF-X Ravens are based on in the game. Sorry, I've no idea what the name of this ship is. It may be written in Japanese, perhaps Renato could tell us? Graham Graham if you could get a bigger clearer scan of the text area in that pic, maybe we could translate the name of the ship. I agree. It looks like it's written there, but I can't make it out. We just need a close up of the text, if that is possible. Well, we could call it the CV-565 for now. EDIT -- Thanks, Graham, for the scans, by the way! -
Yep, those are definitely Legos. According to the text it took Kawamori over a year to design these combining mecha, and it is something he wanted to do for a long time. "After 20 years of the Valkyrie, he's finally done it!"

While you're doing that, do you mind scanning the koenig monster lineart if you have time? I've seen it here before, but nothing comes up when I do a search. A few months ago I had the chance to buy one of the VF-X2 books for next to nothing (Y10, I think!!), and I said "Maybe later". I kick myself everytime I remember that. Ow. -
What game? The original NES one? You mean they ported it over to GBA?
-
Based on the game? They'll make anythign into anime, won't they? ... Dammit, now I have to see this thing. Yeah, based on the game. I think it's an early 90s thing, 'cause his artwork looks like Macross II era. I remember it being out in the UK about ten years ago, I doubt it ever got a DVD release. Dammit, now *I* want to see this thing. I'll look around my usual haunts and see what I can find. I got a copy of Video Girl Ai the other day (Production IG's early days), so anything is possible. Edit -- I took this exit off the Anime Web Turnpike: http://www.animejin.org.uk/salama.htm Hmm...

Hey, you know what I'd like to see? The lineart. I haven't seen it in a while and I no longer have the Design Works book with me. Also, Haterist, why don't you post photos so that we can tell if it's done correctly or not? Another thing is, it's funny how "Destroid" mode is actually what we've grown accustomed to call Battroid mode, while the original DESTROID MONSTER configuration is now referred to as GERWALK. Even one of the Japanese magazines got confused here, I seem to recall. -
