I would very much be interested in reading that paper...

One last batch. Oh, yeah, those Vajra Regults were just pre-production sketches. There's a little hand-written memo written on them saying, "Nah, not very likely..."

Next batch... Just occurred to me: I'm gonna look real stoopid if someone's already done all this, since I haven't checked the boards for a couple days...

Mods, please move or merge this thread as you see fit. I can understand if there are too many Frontier threads at the moment, but I have a ton of stuff to upload so I need to keep these in the same place for the time being as I cannot put them all up in one night. I thought about putting this in the Frontier News thread but if I post them sparsely they'd just get buried. Anyway, as I mentioned in the Arihiro Hase thread, earlier this week I was browsing in the library and I came across a few interesting materials. This one here is the latest (April 2008) issue of Animation Note magazine, it's a (mostly) no-nonsense quarterly mag dedicated to the animation industry for pros and amateurs. This season's special feature is on mecha design with a whopping 20-odd pages on MacF alone. There's some never-before-seen stuff in here so I hope you enjoy it. And yeah I rushed the scans so some are wonky or upside-down. I don't really have the time, so if you could fix them yourselves... Here goes:

It's Kyoto Seika University, the one that has the world's first Manga Faculty. So yeah, lots of materials there. Not enough for my purposes, though....

Earlier this week, I was browsing in the library of the university where I work, and I found an old issue of Comic Figure Oh which had an interview with Hase's parents, remembering the last couple of days before his death and the events leading up to it. It was indeed a suicide, he jumped from their 7th floor apartment. He visited his parents pretty much everyday and had dinner there. He had his own place in the city but said he "didn't want to go home" that night. He slept with his brother that night but got up and jumped in the early hours of the morning. Anyway, I'm a bit too busy to translate the whole thing but that's the jist I remember from reading it on Tuesday. I'm putting it up here for anyone who's interested. Oh, and please let us refrain from "smart" puns on bringing old threads "back to life", yeah all right, I get it, but let's please stay on the right side of the good taste line.

Here you go, as promised.... Scanned a whole bunch of crap today, so look in the other threads for more goodies, too. More to come, as well.

The opening "Macross XX" intro to the 20th anniversary DVD has some nice stuff in it, and classic missile-dodging.

I think that was just a Pocky stick. -
Yep, that's true. Remember that the 2001-2002 reissues were remolded in a couple of places anyway, most notably the forearms (hence pre-existing 1/55 arm armour did not fit onto the reissues). So I see no reason why they couldn't *physically* re-engineer a couple of bits of plastic like the radome and boosters to make the elints and ostriches. As far as guaranteeing sales, though.... they'll be going up against the new 1/60s. It's like seven years ago ALL OVER AGAIN!! Just like in 2001: Yamato announces 1/60s... so Bandai revives the 1/55 line. Are they TRYING to saturate the market!? It's pretty ridiculous.

I'll have to be The Lovin' Spoonful then. o/` "What a day for a daydream... What a day for a daydreamin' boy..." o/`

Where do you have to go to get the poster? Animate? (I'm not walking in there unless I have a valid reason to. The embarassment factor is just off the scale...) -
Wasn't the Stealth Frigate the ship in which Max launched the Varauta counterattack in Mac7?
-
I remember that! And actually, I think it was a Japanese one from the 80s. I'm sure Shawn must have it somewhere.
-
I remember my favourite one was where all Yamato valkyries are getting ready to take off and the Floating Head is saying "Fly, my children!" but one VF-19 is going "Open the window, then!"

That... was actually the problem in the first place. -
The Aquarion DX Chogokin was 20,000 yen. Since these are being released under that same banner, I see them similarly priced. Although I wish the full armour one is about that price and the supers a little cheaper. EDIT -- I EXPECT, not WISH. What I WISH is that they were free, given away with pastrami sandwiches. I'm hungry.

Hey there, sorry to get back to you so late. I looked at that image in the book and it is labelled simply "actuator". (Not to be confused with the "finger actuators" on the hands.)

SMALL HANDS!!!! -
Wha?? THS Prime is awesome too! I'm no hardcore TF fan, but I loved them both. I was shocked at the colours he chose for MP3 SS at first, but I prefer them to the "real" show colours. And what was wrong with THS Prime other than the cab mode (which I agree is a bit pants)?.

Hi, Alinda, long time no see. You are probably the most passionate Fukuyama fan online, but there ought to be many more. He just does not get enough recognition... Anyway, I was wondering about this DVD, in fact I was thinking of making a new thread about it. I already have that Fire Bomber 2005 DVD he brought out a couple years back, which is really good, but of course the songs are almost all the same as this new one. Of course the performances are different, but this one is really pricey.... Do you have both? This is yet another one of these things I pointlessly debate even though I know I will end up buying eventually. I had never put two and two together, that's really cool.

My sentiments EXACTLY. I like humour, but KK is not funny at all. As I said before, it's almost as if someone just changed the channel on me. -
It was originally Kawamori and Miyatake's idea, remember that it was originally conceived as "Battle City Megaroad/Megaload". Noboru Ishiguro was not involved at such an early stage, he went on board the project several drafts later. Kawamori and Miyatake had several other projects they wanted to do and the one which eventually became Macross (it was planned as a parody of Yamato and Gundam etc) was actually just a "dummy", in case the other ones didn't get any support. Needless to say, that's exactly what happened. They originally were going for a much more serious, hard-edged sci-fi story, but they ended up doing "another" robot show, which would please the broadcasters. They didn't scrap the whole of the work from the other project, though (entitled "Genocidus"), the main mecha from that eventually became what we now know as the GERWALK. EDIT -- Gubaba, you're right that Ishiguro was there to give reassurance to the producers since almost everyone of the staff was inexperienced. I read in Newtype recenty that Yasuhito Kikuchi, Mac F director and former animator on SDF, said his position (along with Kawamori) on the new show is similar to the original show in that they're basically looking over a bunch of up-and-coming young animators. So I guess they're like passing the torch.
