  1. I think there is a gap between the West and Japan that has changed in nature since the 80s. Back then, the anime been exported was few and far between, and re-edited a la Battle of the Planets and Robotech. The more hardcore fans used their networking to send over 5th-generation tapes around to each other. That was how I originally saw Macross 7. However, in recent years, due in no small part to media literacy brought about by the proliferation of the PC and other new gadgets and their everyday use as well as the overall information overload we are experiencing in society, the "geeks" and "nerds" have really started to come out of the woodwork and become main players within new media. Thus, while it's not fully there yet, anime in the west has gotten quite a bit of mainstream acceptance, one highlight of which being Spirited Away's Academy award win. So it is slowly evolving. I am not so sure this can be said for the situation in Japan. Anime has been a niche market over there for a long time and the whole "otaku" thing -- Densha Otoko not withstanding -- is all about NOT wanting to slip into the mainstream. But that applies not just to anime, but to the whole "nerd/geek/not normal" issue. Basically, in the West, the geeks are taking over Hollywood and TV with revolutionary new concepts which then are diffused into the mainstream, but in Japan they remain within the geek realm, never to be seen by the average joe. Maybe that is going a bit too far, but it certainly seems like audiences within Japan have a totally different concept of "visual entertainment". VFTF1 -- It's uncanny you would start a thread like this at this time since I am preparing to write a paper about childhood and otaku, etc. I can provide you with a link to a paper I wrote last year which clarifies my points in this post a bit more. I hope it can incite further discussion. http://www.kyoto-seika.ac.jp/event/kiyo/page/kiyo-34e.html (It's PDF format) I am really enjoying reading everybody's stimulating opinions. It's about time we had a thread like this, it's good to do this every once in a while!
  2. I didn't like this episode. I found it boring, because I've mostly given up on liking any character in this show. They may not be quite as two-dimensional as Shin and Edgar in Macross Zero, but still, they just do not interest me. Plus Zero had Roy, at least. I too noticed that a lot of the posts here refer to the next episode preview. I even forgot that I watched this episode. I couldn't even remember anything about it! I loved SDF Mac because of the mix of great characters and great backstory, in Mac7 the great characters almost made up for the silly backstory (demons from another dimension) and now I'm just purely watching this show for the intriguing backstory, and action. I really do not care one bit about Alto and his whole frigging family. And Sheryl pushing her breasts together is just embarassing. Looking forward to changing gears in the next episode, though!
  3. Correction, you need a TV with COMPONENT AV-input sockets, which are the orange, blue, green connectors. Apparently these are for Progressive signals and SOME newer standard-definition TVs do have them. However in my case I'm stuck with COMPOSITE AV-input, the red/yellow/white deal. I lie, the TV itself is MONO, so it's yellow and white only. I don't know why, but in Japan they still make monaural TVs. My TV was manufactured in 2004. I have a separate 5.1 setup for DVDs, so I'm not all stone-age though. EDIT -- You beat me, there, Gunbuster. It wasn't you I was "correcting", btw!
  4. I rejoiced when I read this... but after doing a bit of research, it seems you need to have an HDTV to play games on TV? Well that sucks!! Oh, well, I was ALMOST sold, but I think I'll carry on considering this for a while.
  5. I don't have a PSP but I'm really considering one now just to experience this. Now THIS is something I would like to know more about! Does that mean we all could play this game online together? I was a bit disappointed when the press release said that multiplayer would be wireless but not online, however hearing about this "cheat" really brings my hopes up!
  6. RIP Did anybody see the documentary entitled "F*CK"? It's about the origins, usage and social ramifications of the word. Anyway, George Carlin featured prominently in it as a pioneer of sorts. I recommend it, it shows how amazing he was.
  7. Haven't read through the whole thing, but here is a discussion on the developments.... http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2...ic.php?p=574208 It was mentioned also that "Robert's Anime Corner Store" also stocks them, or something? Anyway, mods, please join this thread to the previous Orguss DVD thread so that we have all the info in one place, thank you.
  8. This is one of her first non-tieup singles (probably THE first?), which you can find on the debut album entitled "Rose". Most of her older albums were re-released last year with mini vinyl LP-style reproduction jackets and remastered audio, so it should be pretty easy to find.

    FWOOOOOOOOooooOOOOoooMMM!!
  10. I'm still not really sure why everyone loves the PS2 game so much. It didn't take long at all to complete, and as soon as I was done, it went back on the shelf to gather dust. I took it out again a few months back because I wanted to play with a friend, I could've sworn there was a VS. option, but it didn't even have that. On the whole, I found it quite fun while it lasted, but once you've done it, it's boring, and it sucks that they took out the SV-51 and the VF-0 at the last minute. Fools. VF-X2 on the other hand, I loved, and I would replay it time and again, so many valks, and the Konig...! I guess the option of controlling lots of different fighters is one of the most important things for me. That's why I think this game is gonna kick ass.... Not a fan of looking at tiny screens, though. And it must have the Konig! I demand it! This new power they're supplyin'? It's pretty electrifyin', man.
  11. Doyusha made a series of die-cast valkyries a couple of years back. There was a VF-1, YF-19 and YF-21 and plenty of variations thereof. http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/toys/_...vf1s_focker.htm http://www.macrossworld.com/macross/news/_news_n047.htm MW doesn't seem to have a listing for the 21 nor any of the other variants (Max & Millia, VF-X2 colour 19 etc.) but anyway, trust me, there were more. Maybe a forum search for Doyusha will clear stuff up as to how many variants there actually were.
  12. Apparently, that's already in pre-dev, and a script got leaked like a year ago or so. Some guy on Aint it cool news said it was the best script he'd ever read. Yet he mentioned that, in the story, the lionbots were literally made out of junk. It sounds like a joke, but we do have a Street Fighter movie about only ChunLi coming out, so I really don't know what to think anymore.

    sv-51

I checked and some online stores say the first reissue was in April, the second is coming at the end of June. Where did you read July?
  14. Renato

    sv-51

What?? Oh, man, that's the first I've heard of this! OK, time to save up and get an Ivanov in July, whoohoo! I've wanted an SV-51 toy even since before the VF-0 came out, but I didn't want any first edition hiccups nor stupid colours. Unless they announce some cool low-viz scheme or something, I'll be grabbing that re-issue, then.
  15. Excellent!! I've been looking for this thing for ages. It was a manga used in the music video for the live version of Holy Lonely Light, featuring Hummingbird (a "music clip" is a promo video, basically). In the oiginal video, it was superimposed over images of the band playing while the camera zoomed around everywhere. I've always wanted to try to track down where this thing came from. You can find the video as an extra on volume one of the normal DVD release, not sure where they've put it in the new remastered box set, but I'm sure it's in there. In any case, you can download it from iMacross and Macrosshare.
  16. Thanks a lot for the scans! The translation is: "I wonder if this day will ever come..?"

    Macross Revoltech

Thanks for the comparison, Graham. I'm probably gonna go for the Revoltech 19 because I'm all about accessories and stuff, though I agree the GNU is more accurate. To me the RT just looks more "fun". But hey, I refer the Banprestos to the RT VF-1's, so that's me. Also, price is a factor. For accuracy, I'll get a 1/60 YF-19, since that transforms and everything -- though, again, the price has stopped me from getting it in the past. If the GNU had lots of weapons and FAST Packs etc, it'd be a different story.
  18. There are scans on CollectionDX's review, I believe. I'm surprised I haven't seen more (or any) customs using them. The mouth one would also go well on the Konig Monster so you can have an SMS version.
  19. I don't think it's bothering anyone per se. It's like finding Easter eggs. Although I do really want to see stuff they put in there on purpose like the Budweiser cans.
  20. Gubaba is right, it is a joke on the famous Shibuya 109 department store (the logo style is identical). What you are thinking of is OIOI, otherwise known as "Marui". It's funny though, because so far Frontier has been shown to be modelled after a mixture of Shibuya and San Francisco (in fact, that's what they call the different areas, judging from the signs on the streetcars in the first episode), yet I believe there is a branch of Marui actually in SF, and not 109. Ironic. Anyway, I did actually notice the mistake of the reflection not being reversed on Alto's visor in the first episode. Most of the others are new, though. Also in the first episode, if you look closely at the VF-171 in some shots the NUNS letters are reversed, like the picture with the reversed SMS-007 on the VF-25 which Kresphy showed. It's strange... sometimes I think they've reversed the whole show.
  21. That's a bonus that comes with the first pressing of the OST1 CD. Although not every shop carried it, I think.

    Macross Revoltech

I was looking at the Revoltech site, and according to the data there, the YF-21 will have 14 RT joints compared to the YF-19's 13. Anyone care to speculate where the extra one will be..?
  23. Maybe it wasn't the gun.... somebody may have objected to the flames on Prime?
  24. I don't think it's that, because it's the black shoulder piece which as far as I can tell is molded in colour. Anyway, upon closer inspection, I noticed that it is THE EXACT SAME PIECE as the other shoulder. In other words, my Shogo has two right shoulders, the give-away is the button on his black short sleeve, which on the left arm is in his armpit, whereas it should obviously be facing outwards. Jeez. Nevermind, though, because I just superglued the thing in place so now everything is fine. As for the Sex-Wax thing, I was sure I had seen a picture of it spelt correctly in someone's review a while back, no...? Odd.
  25. Dude, you are.... fast. Nah, it's a peg-and-hole deal, and the peg just got stuck inside, it seems. There are actually two shoulder joints, one which moves the arm forward and back, and one which moves it outwards and in. You will never need to move this second one for anything so I do not recommend it, I tried it and this is what happened. I guess it's too tight. Anyway, Lupin III figures for the Garland! Our lines are waiting!
