EDIT2 -- Heh, apparently she teamed up with that guy from the band Chicago to do a Silent Moebius song: Not bad.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. A few weeks ago I asked the Japanese Macross fans if they knew who provided the singing voice for Emilia in "The Galaxy is Calling Me", and they told me it was a lady called Okudoi Mika (not to be confused with Misa's voice actress, Doi Mika), Check out her Youtube clips: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSST6j5wA5k As you can see, she's a pretty talented jazz singer. If anyone is in Nagasaki, she's performing there next week! It's just a liiiittle out of my way, though Anyway, it pleases me to finally get a solution to one of the biggest mysteries of Macross fandom. EDIT: I didn't notice, it was either purely coincidental or an odd act of my subconscious that I recently changed my avatar to an image of Emilia.

Stephen Hawking and the human emigration project
Renato replied to Marzan's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Heh, I like this post, and I like this thread in general. It comes as rather timely for me, as next month I will be teaching a course precisely on the subject of how space exploration could/should play a great role in our lives within the coming decades. With our energy resources rapidly depleting I think we should have turned to space for accumulating space solar power or oxygen/helium/water harvesting on the moon (like in that new "Moon" movie), but the issue is how would that affect our society. Plus the scrapping of the Space Shuttle really put a damper on the manned space missions, so while we have Richard Branson planning his Virgin Galactic endeavour in the realm of space tourism, the practicality of going into space has to become more economical real soon, real fast. It just costs too much money and fuel to blast stuff into orbit every time. That's where I think the research being done right now in space elevators should play a key role... Now the only problem is to get people to stop laughing and consider the fact that as fictional as that may sound, it may just be one of the few real solutions to the problems plaguing us right now. As for space emigration, I'm sure some of you have heard of Gerard O'Neill, if not, wiki him up, he was one of the first aerospace engineers to realistically propose the concept of space colonies way back in the 70s. So rather than building a Mars base or something, a space colony might be more realistic to start off with. -
I chose the 51, but it's mostly because of the longer nose. 20091027171037_0.bmp

I've had mine for a couple of months and the shoulders are getting pretty loose now. No paint scratches that I notice, though.

Even if they make a Mylene in Minmay dress I doubt she could fit on Basara's lap... plus he would need a Hikaru flight suit (though I guess you could use a 1/60 VF-1 pilot). I'd like to have a Mylene figure in flight suit that could go in the valk's hands just like in that episode with the song energy and stuff.

The presence of the Orguss is enough to give story writers free reign to create any kind of crossover, hell, they could put the X-Men or Lord of the Rings worlds in there if they wanted to. Such is the power of the Space-time Oscillation Bomb

That brings back a few memories. I have that album on vinyl. But yeah, VF5SS is right, Sub Street has many more similarities to "More than a Feeling" than "Misfire", which really only seems similar in terms of the opening riff.
-
Yes, but that's not exactly how it's described. Macek chose his words carefully to make it sound like he wrote the entire movie and the Japanese staff re-worked Paul Power's storyboards. Take a look for yourself:

Most hentai is released in OVA format and their quality is comparable to Asylum flicks. Your argument sounds like "All cars are Ferraris". And by the way, "voila" and "viola" are two different things. Yeah, it's a joke because the lyrics are "This isn't anime! This isn't anime!" OK, very funny, haha.
-
Yeah, but at least it's not just a re-edit of the actual animation, which is what Macek was referring to. EDIT -- Attached the page in question for discussion's sake.
-
"Viola"? . Sorry, Keith, but even if that argument made any sense whatsoever, randomly inserting names of string instruments in your writings makes you lose even more credibility real fast. Meanwhile, guess what? These days I've been using my commuting time constructively/destructively by reading Robotech Art 3. I know many of you have read it, but I'm sure many have not, so I just want to very briefly give my impressions. A lot of it is actually really interesting, though I question how much is true. Most of the stuff about Robotech the Movie is dubious since Megazone 23 is never mentioned, moreover, they credit some American dude with the storyboarding and everything. The bit that kind of irritated me was when they describe the method of producing the episodes -- they had actually hired Hiroshi Iwata and Hiroshi Onogi, among others, and apparently Uncle Carl felt that the Japanese were trying to focus on the new characters more and brush Rick and Lisa et al off to the side, just so they could later turn around and broadcast an edited version of the show to the Japanese market. Wow. Pots and kettles come to mind.

One of the features advertised is that the head will transform without part-swapping.

Hey there, I'm back from Mie and Aichi prefectures. It's been one hell of a weekend. I am quite disappointed that we never got to actually speak to Chie-san, but it was an absolutely amazing concert nonetheless, and the chance of having a chat with MacPlus/Mac7 record producer Shiro Sasaki (I translated some of his writings a few months back in the Fire Bomber Music thread) and of course Tomo Sakurai was unexpected and incredible. After the concert, the hardcore Macross fans showed me some of their TV appearances. You know, I never realized just how close-knit the Macross community is over here. It seems that everyone knows each other. Now that I'm Kanto-based I will try and meld the foreign and Japanese groups together and form some unstoppable force of Protoculture Addicts/ Lying Purists. I'm really glad I went to this concert, Chie is amazing, her music is both ethereal and wild, and I can't wait for her next gig/album.

Thanks to Saves closeup of the text, it has also been revealed that this valk will have a rotating cockpit too. Theres also something about "little lock firing" on the legs? Maybe the missiles actually shoot out?? No, thats only if they pull a Bandai and dont include basic stuff.
-
BOMBAA!! Opening shoulder speakers? Oh, hell yeah. Barring any unforseen circumstances, this may be the first mold I will buy ALL variants of. Thanks Save! Now for gods sake get some sleep (thats what im gonna do) -Renato, in Aichi, thru PSP

Huh, that's exactly where mine broke.

At last, someone who cares! Yeah, I use XP so I'm not sure about that, but in doing my homework I did read that there were issues with 7 and Vista. As for the USB thing, so, does that make it easier to connect, or decrease lag in some way? I'm just using wireless right now. Not that I have actually played a single game yet. I registered and everything but when I start up the Xlink program and it should tell me how many users are in a particular section, it just gives a question mark. So there would be for example an area which says "MACROSS ULTIMATE FRONTIER: ? users active", which makes me wonder if I was in fact connected or not. As for RemoteJoy.. yeah, I find that having two or more plugins on the memory stick will cause some kind of problem when using specific programs and cause the PSP to crash. So for example I cannot play PS1 games while I have GoTube installed, as they hang on the startup screen and then the PSP just shuts down. I am not sure if deactivating the plugin from the recovery menu would solve the issue, but I doubt it, and just in case I try to not even go there. Having said that, RemoteJoy is excellent.

Yamato tried to go down that alley with the VF-0 and we ripped them to shreds, remember? That's why they went back to the drawing board and came back with the 1/60 instead. As for the Banprestos, I like them too. The head swap thing was cool, the other companies get really stingy when they could all just follow Banpresto's lead and include different head types. Especially now that the new Yamato 1/60 heads are designed to pop off anyway. Anyway, I broke my Max Banpresto a couple of years back, I'm sad to say. If you look at the hinges used to fold the chestplate over to meet the backplate during transformation, those things actually halve in diameter. I didn't realize how thin those were at the ends until they actually snapped. As bad rep as these things have, I played the hell out of that toy, and so it was only a matter of time, sadly. My opinion? They're good, cheap toys. Poseable, fun and kid-friendly. Expect few people here to agree, though, most think they're utter pieces of crap. Either way, I would imagine there would be little re-sale value.

It was actually part of the "o-tooshi", which is this appetizer thing that you have to pay for at some Japanese places even if you don't want one. So I didn't order it, but I did get charged for it. In other news, the reason I was so late to the Toy Show was because I was over at the "United States of Odaiba" just before that, trying out the new Playstation Wii.. Daaahh, I mean, the "Playstation Move". I might write a bit about that in the other forum, but, really, it's not that big a deal. I've yet to see anything more revolutionary than the Eye-toy.
-
Hey, I just got back from the show. I got there, went straight into the Sega Toys booth and queued up for thirty minutes to try that new brain wave thing that's been all over the news, and after that the show was literally over. Literally. LOL. Major fail. Later I went to an izakaya and found a pubic hair in my cabbage and they screwed up my order twice. At least the weather was nice. By which I mean, boiling hot.

I know, but I'm not really going to be using it all the time or anything. There's nothing on BluRay that interests me right now (at least not enough so I feel I must get a player), and the DVD upscaler sounds good for HD DYRL goodness, but I would then need to invest in a separate 5.1 system, as my DVD player already has it built in, with all the output sockets right there at the back of the deck. Sound is a big deal for me, but I cannot keep up with all this HDMI, HDCP, DTS HD and DD HD BS. For the time being, I will sit on the fence until I hear that this game is the best thing ever, or that there are worthwhile features on the Macross Frontier movie BR. Otherwise, I'm happy with my 5.1 DVDs and Macross Ultimate Frontier on PSP (which looks great on the TV screen anyway). Thanks. But it makes little difference, as I can play my PS1 games on the PC with no real issues anyway. I own the Macross PS2 game and MGS3 but don't have a console for those... argh. Damn you, Sony, for taking away the one thing which would have actually tipped me over to your side of the fence. Oh well, your loss.

Nice box! I really like the head illustration. Poor Docker, though, he's not distinctive/recognisable enough to be part of the box art. By the way, anyone in Tokyo right now can view a sample of the actual toy on display at the limited Macross Shop in Akihabara, which is in the information centre of the UDX Plaza.
