  1. I had that too, and I never knew it was actually from the show "Space Adventure Cobra", until quite recently, when I saw it in a shop. I actually thought about buying it again, for nostalgia's sake. It has a real Syd Mead kind of thing there, brilliant.
Trans (of my own post): I see. I was also there. I know you feel disappointed, of course I too would have liked to have seen it with a clear picture, but I enjoyed myself anyway. Though in my case I was in Tokyo anyway, so I didn't really think much of things like transport costs. Unfortunately this can never be like Star Wars which can be remastered and re-released generally for the 20th anniversary. I wish that DYRL had gotten officially shown outside Japan, but even if BigWest wanted to do that, the truth is that HG is in the way, and it is unrealistic to think that the two companies can ever negotiate and reach an agreement. Not soon anyway.
------- Brief translation: Yui1107 believes that Bandai Visual are lazy because even though they released an "HD Remaster" version of DYRL on DVD, the version of the movie they showed in Roppongi a few months back was a worn out film from the 80s, with scratches everywhere. I replied that we do not know what methods Bandai Visual used to produce their "remaster" or even if they actually went back to the master at all, but I'm sure they would not produce a pristine 35mm print just for one night's screening. For those interested, here is the thread on the DYRL Roppongi showing, which Save, Tenjin-san, Tochiro and I attended (and thoroughly enjoyed, I might add): http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=33214&st=0&p=854505&hl=ropongi&fromsearch=1entry854505
  4. Aw. No (M)love(r ) for the Orguss?
  5. Ah yes. It's this kind of thinking that has led to the scrapping of the tradition of closing the streets to traffic on weekends in Akihabara. Thanks for keeping our society safe, guys. Yes, so in that case let us bring back the good ol' days of Tsutomu Miyazaki when the word "otaku" meant obsessive behaviour and mental instability on a clinical level, and instilled fear and paranoia within our peaceful Japanese lifestyle of overwork and stress during the bubble period. Beware the otaku monster, for he will defile your firstborn. Heaven forbid it just mean "fan". By the way, the guys at Big West a few months ago were extremely nice to us, and Mr. Ohnishi himself actually shook our hands (I remember he actually used both hands in a kind of clasping manner) saying "Thank you for liking Macross!" in English. We were taken aback, he was so exceptionally welcoming and grateful. Maybe it's just me, but I think that as long as you have manners and fairly good people skills, I think very few people are going to suspect you're going to stab them with a surplus army knife or run them down with a truck.
  6. Wait... what the hell. That thing is not even supposed to exist!! Do you have a VHD deck to play it on? I want to know if it's the Manga dub or the other one with David Hayter on it (since the latter is the one they use on the Japanese DVD release). Also, great collections, everyone. Very nice stuff, in particular the iscs on the top left of the pic posted by Totoro242.
  7. I remember watching the first episode quite a while back for the first time in years, and I noticed that Skywarp could actually "warp" to other locations. I was like, "what the hell?? Could he do that??" I don't recall him doing that since, so I agree, I think they dropped most of those ideas later on in the series. Oh and by the way. What is it with all the Transformer threads taking up half the board. Is there a reason they can't all go in the "Super Thread"? This is almost as bad as all those Mospeada threads a while back. Meanwhile that thread about Stephen Hawking's ideas for space colonization was closed, supposedly because of the existence of the Science & Tech thread, serious and enlightening discussion be damned.
  8. I'm sure the latter would be considered quite boastable on this thread. Also I might remind you that the reason Kawamori got a job at Studio Nue in the first place is because he was an obsessive geek who was always going over there after school, disturbing Miyatake and gang while they were trying to work. Not that I'm expecting to be the next in line for the throne of floating headyness, but it might be worthwhile to try and speak to some guys there at least about THE POSSIBILITY OF SOME SUBTITLES FOR BLURAYS SINCE SO MANY OF YOU PEOPLE WANT THEM. Although that would probably be Bandai Visual we would have to pester, I guess.
  9. There's this: http://www.animeclassicreviews.com/2007/07/call-me-tonight-1986.html But not all of them are on there, I think. Blazing Transfer Student (which I downloaded ages ago but never got round to watching, and I'm not sure where the file is now!) is not on there, neither is that hard-boiled thriller one which I can't remember the name of. It was something like "Blue Nights", I think? Anyway, just watched Hikaruon ep.1 and Maryuu Senki, amazing stuff. I certainly would like to see more! Edit -- just realized: that is the blog you were talking about, right? OK, never mind, ignore me. NOTHING TO READ HERE.... KEEP MOVING...
  10. Ooh, I've got one! It's just the same as La Blue Girl where they have giant demon monsters tentacle-raping young schoolgirls! Oh, those crazy Japanese cartoons!
  11. It's a petition for a sequel in which Basara and gang meet Minmay.
  12. Thanks for the pics. Yeah, those subtitles are from the Central Anime/PsyCorps scripts all right. I have those on VHS. Pirates trying to pass off someone else's work as their own. Oh well, still nice to have, I guess. I still would have liked to see scans or pics of the packaging, though.
  13. So... is it slow or fast? Mixed signals..! How is the Orguss campaign? That's what makes or breaks it for me.
  14. Damn! I actually watched that again a couple of weeks ago, it is still amazing to this day. Gotta love that "Megatron reformatting" scene. Have fun!
  15. Heh, I'm not sure why I never looked in this thread before. So many stupid Macross-related things I've done over the years... I think my wife is on board with "Roy" as our child's name if we have a boy... I think most recently the most ridiculous thing was probably dragging Save and Alex around the suburbs of Tokyo in the sweltering summer heat to look for the offices of Studio Nue. It was quite an adventure, it even features a tiger-striped rhinoceros, among other random things. I was meaning to do a write-up at some point, but that fell on the backburner. I'll get round to it eventually.
  16. I was just reading about that on TFW and I found this genius post by a member named Xaxis. Personally, I think the new version of the new version of the old song (sigh) is much better than the new version of the old song I saw last year, but that just means it's only mediocre, whereas last year was hilariously awful, what with those other cheesy band members grinning at the camera. Man, I laughed my ass off. Edited for clarity. If you can believe that.
  17. OK, but then it's really Kawamori you should be disappointed at in that case, for having neglected to design any in the first place. As for the pricing issue, yeah, they are high. I only bought my VF-22 because it was like half-off. Buying them when they go cheap is a good strategy, the only time it doesn't work is when you have limited items, which unfortunately are becoming more and more common (goddamn you Bandai and your exclusive fists -- yeah, I think I'm gonna put that in my sig from now on, I just can't say it enough). Has anyone seen the Chogokin Spec Layzner figure? The stand is electronic and looks just like the navigation computer in the show, with soundbytes and speech. It is very similar to what you describe. I don't know if that would work with valks, though, I've always thought of Macross as a little more realistic and less cheesy than other robot shows. Then again, give me a built-in MP3 player with the VF-19 and I'll be so over that because it's just pure unadulterated awe.
  18. They're still putting it together, but apparently it's coming "soon". Patience!
  19. I didn't mean that lack of popularity led to the episodes being omitted, rather that this restricted the spread of popularity that the show could have enjoyed. It was still quite successful but there are reasons to assume it is probably more popular in the US right now. Incidentally, Samurai Champloo actually did have its TV run cut. If it wasn't for HG, who knows how many Macross projects could have been funded had the international market been taken into consideration. Remember Kawamori's plans for a live action movie? I was actually talking about Samurai Champloo there. We need scans. This thing literally sounds too good to believe.
  20. Just to play devil's advocate... It is not necessarily true that anime in the US never outsells the domestic Japanese market. Something grabbed my attention the other day. The Cowboy Bebop movie would never have been produced were it not for the demand in the overseas market. The TV show itself was not even ever broadcast in its entirety on terrestrial Japanese television, with only about half of the 26 episodes actually aired, the rest were only shown sporadically on cable. Meanwhile, Adult Swim gave it an entire ten-year run, constantly bringing new fans. Even Samurai Champloo was primarily designed for the foreign market -- Shinichi Watanabe admitted that he knew from the start it would be unpopular among Japanese otaku. And guess what? The show is not available on Blu-Ray here. If you happen to be a Japanese fan and want to watch it in HD, you have to import the US release! Howzat for irony?
  21. 1) There are no such things as fastpacks for the VF-22S. 2) The latest releases of the YF-21 no longer include the stand nor fastpacks, hence their inclusion in the booster set.
  22. Yeah, I saw the real ending. Not that I remember much about it. I do remember that there are actually two endings, though. The "Ok, well done, whatever" ending, and the true ending, where I think you end up having to fight the corrupt UN Spacy alongside the terrorists and then later you visit Gilliam's grave. My memory of this is extremely hazy, though. And yeah, you get to play with Koenig Monsters and Armored Thunderbolts and whatnot in many stages the second time round after completing it once. As for picking up the PSP again, well, I do use it everyday as an MP3 player and web browser at least! So all I would have to do is sift through my collection (read: "junkpile") of CDs to find the game. Hope to get round to that sometime soon. I was actually doing Metal Gear Solid VR Missions on it for a while, that's perfect for when I'm riding the train. Thanks!
  23. Yamato should stick an MP3 player chip into their Sound Boosters, and have them be actual working speakers. Howzat?? Apart from that, I don't want any tacky rubbish on my valks, thank you.
  24. Anyway, here's the ridiculous attachment piece. Note how far back the main body of the Sound Booster is placed, causing a huge gap between it and the valk. Also, notice the angle on the shoulders. Also, the figure can stand up by itself according to some of those bloggers in the links above, but the problem is that Bandai never puts in ratchet joints in the feet, in any valk toy, so if you've had the toy as long as I have you might have problem standing it up with the SB attached, as those loose ankles are treacherous. Otherwise, here are some display options, which is where this toy shines... While it lasts
  25. Yep, exactly. And its tightness, combined with the thin plastic of the gunpod handle makes for yet another point to be weary of. Unlike the Hi-Metal VF-1, if you snap the handle off on this toy, you're screwed. EDIT -- Stupid, embarassing grammatical mistake.
