What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v3.0
Renato replied to wolfx's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Yeah, it's really good, and it could have been even better if it hadn't been plagued with production troubles all throughout. On the subject, I managed to get hold of these a couple of weeks ago: -
Plus he does many more concerts frequently in Tokyo than Kyoto anyway. I lived in Kyoto for five years and he never came once in that time. I did actually see him in Kyoto while I was living in Osaka before that, though. I wonder what the venue is this time, because Kyoto is full of tiny historic live houses. The one he performed at in 2004 was "Taku taku", which has been around for decades and the walls are entirely covered in autographs, and has seen huge blues/soul acts like Mavis Staples, etc. Thanks to the awesome atmosphere, that one was a really cool, intimate acoustic gig. If you're in the area and you like music, that's a good place to go. Beware that it's really hard to find, though, you have to navigate the backstreets with 6th sense ninja skills. There's also a cafe called "Tits" round the corner, though.

Live Action Space Battleship Yamato
Renato replied to capt.actionjackson's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Nice find! According to this, Yamato is at #64 in Japan's highest grossing openings ever list: http://boxofficemojo.com/intl/japan/opening/ That's not bad. Note that the oldest movie I can see on that list is Terminator 3, though. Also, going slightly off-topic, it is surprising to see the apparent lack of popularity of films like Twilight if we look at the 2009 top rankings in Japan according to that site. And Macross F only made about $5 million, just a bit more than Yamato Resurrection (even though I believe they spent a lot more advertising on MacF than Yamato), and much, much less than Evangelion.- 450 replies

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v3.0

Whoa, X-Men!! Heh, that will be interesting. I watched a couple of the Ironman ones by Madhouse and they were all right. Apart from that, Showa Monogatari and maybe Toriko look intriguing, but all the others look the same. -
Not that I know of. They did have separate non-exclusive option sets for their Evas, but that's because there's so many of them. Meanwhile, they have done exclusive whole Revoltech figures, though, like the "XAN" Black Ninja King Gainer. Also, alternate exclusive versions of pre-existing figures like the Max and Millia VF-1s (simple repaints, though), the winged Eva angels with all the blood everywhere and the blue Soltic. Perhaps they will make an exclusive all-inclusive set (no pun intended). Then again, as Eugimon has illustrated with his single line, no-one really cares that much about robots anymore.

What?? It transforms?? Huh. I guess that's cool, but I'd rather they had included the Buster Colliders like I mentioned earlier... Ah, never mind. The heart-ripping pose looks incredible, so I guess I will get this anyway. Shame about the inability to cross arms. Surely they could have included spare "crossed arms"? I get the feeling they want to release an exclusive add-on set later.

I don't get why they're so horrified. They're in maid costumes, for God's sake. You would think they'd have more than a passing knowledge of pervy guy material than other types of girls. Thanks for that. I've actually had the DVD of the first episode for over half a year now (came with the now-seemingly-defunct "Animage Original" magazine), but totally forgot about it. -
I have to say I do get where Jenius is coming from. I am definitely guilty of complaining about the DX 25 much more than I have praised the 27, and really I should have done both equally. But I tend to justify that with the excuse that the 27 is on par with the standards we ought to expect in 2009-10, whereas the 25 really, really fell short of that, so it was more shock than anything. Especially since we always equated Bandai with the SOC masterpieces and imagined they would bring out a similar product. It was such a big shock that we're still talking about it. As for the sales of the DX 25, as someone already said, it was the hero robot in one of the most popular anime of recent years, they will sell no matter what. I would also like to add that most of the people buying these are not hardcore Macross fans like us, and will settle for things we would think are lacking in certain respects. They likely do not have the experience of transforming robots we do. I assume Yamato is going for a more difficult market to please, the aging fan who knows the VF-1 inside-out and has ultra-high expectations based on decades of history with these toys. Just something to consider.

My VF-25G Michael became a floppy mess after two days or so, so I sent it back to Bandai, and got another from them. It wasn't much different. Then I got the green VF-27 and the shoulders are extremely floppy now. At least that one looks good, though.
-
I wonder what it would come with, though? I know the SOC came with loads of stuff but I never saw the baseball bat and scythe (or whatever that was) in the actual show. I'd be happy with just a few swappable hands and maybe some alternate "Buster Collider" arms. The recent Dancougar hardly came with any options.

Your last thread was entitled simply, "How badly would..." I personally dislike purposeful crypticness in a thread title, and I imagine I'm among the majority in that respect.

Wow, Gunbuster... it'll be my first time to buy a Revoltech since.... Oh, yeah, I totally forgot I had bought Lupin using store points. But apart from that, it's been ages!

I saw Summer Wars several times as an in-flight movie, so I actually got sick of it. Yeah, it's not a bad movie at all. I wouldn't go as far as buying it, though. I don't like the idea that the net becomes some ridiculous infantile playground, but I admire the design work that went into it, even if the aesthetic is not to my tastes. Has anyone watched "Plawres Sanshirou"? Pro-wrestling with miniature robots. I've just started that one. Seems like good ol' 1980s fun. Also, I'm still working my way through "Gantz" in preparation for the upcoming movie, as well as still watching Arjuna. -
I think I read that it's coming out in April next year, but don't quote me on that. There have been far too much Votoms anime stuff out in the last year or so (e.g. "Case Irvine", the unfortunately titled "Votoms Finder", etc.), none of it advertised properly, so I cannot keep track.

I like Vangelus's reviews, he has a lot of charisma which Peaugh and some others lack somewhat. I know that's their style, but Peaugh in particular I find sounds downright depressed sometimes. I like the way he shows the figure and the transformation clearly, and how he always gets the items before release, though. As entertainment, however, Vangelus wins out.

The moviegoing public is significantly smaller, but ticket prices are comparatively high, so who knows. I rarely go to the movies due to the price.- 450 replies

Aw, no more Mikimoto box art. By the way, I saw a screenshot that showed the Nyan-nyan shop, so I'm sure it's still there.

Huh?? I don't remember that pic in the magazine?

Looks like a Gundam with a missing faceplate. -
I have an official image somewhere of a Fire Valkyrie playing a giant guitar which is shaped just like the cockpit guitar. It was used as an image for a trading card and is not a preparatory sketch like the image above.

Like it was two years ago. Oh wait, it was! Yeah, so it took them about a decade and a half to let go of that exclusive license. We'll be grandfathers by the time anyone else starts making VF-25s.

Live Action Space Battleship Yamato

Save! Don't bother me with facts! Seriously, though. Sigh. Sometimes I just think Japan has sunk into the pacific and all that's left is this odd, abstract facsimile. It's kind of in the right place, it looks a bit like it should, but it ain't the same. People in this country were the best in the world at visualizing science-fiction, they had managed to industrialize artistic techniques, and they created a well-concentrated pool of talent. Unfortunately, they shoved them out of sight, and now it's like they never existed. This movie probably should have been made ten or 20 years ago, maybe it would have had some impact. Then again, it's the weekend now, hopefully it will do better..?- 450 replies

Good find! Revell's Robotech line of kits included Dougram mecha, so I guess they pulled a "Shogun Warriors" and made this in the same style. Funny that it only lasted two issues. It's always so fascinating to dig up these forgotten dark relics of pop culture history.

Are the ones from 6 actually in colour, or were they originally painted in black and white?

To be fair, I still haven't seen the content from the last UMD online at all, and some of the interviews, in particular the one with Miyatake, are insightful.
