There is no need to paint if you don't want to, unless you plan on customizing. Seriously. A layer of topcoat is all you really need; you won't be able to tell the difference. Respirators are only necessary if you're spraying from a can or airbrush. Handbrushing acrylics is safe.

To answer your first question, it really depends on the kit itself. Those with lots of clear parts and holograms like the Exia and Unicorn require more work, as you need to spray individual parts of the armor to avoid getting paint or matte spray on the clear parts. The method you mentioned [spraying the parts that are still on the runners] saves you a lot of time and effort, but you still need to do minor touch ups on the nub marks and certain parts that have seams you might want to seal. Decals: there are two different types--dry transfer and the typical water-slide type [is that the proper term?]. The former simply requires you to place the decal onto the part, scratch at the decal with a fingernail or blunt end of a tweezer in order to transfer the decal onto the surface, hence the name. Water-slide decals requires you to soak the decals in water, allowing the decal to separate from the paper underneath it. You then slide it off the paper onto the part, and gently dab off the water with tissue. When applying water slide decals onto curved surfaces, you can use certain products to soften the decals so that they conform better to the surface. Always apply decals on a glossy surface, as it allows you to move the decals around more easily to get the right angle, and remember to top coat the surface afterwards to protect it. As for painting, it's just like Vifam7 said; you don't necessarily have to paint the Gundam kits up. Most, if not all, of the 1/100 scale and MG Gundam kits have parts that are all molded in the correct color. The most you'll need to do is panel line, apply decals, and spray some matte coat on it. I'll get back to you on that once I survive building that Zebra 41 kit.

Which ones are you planning to get, specifically? Batwing [now confirmed as The Bat], cammo Tumbler, black Tumbler reissue, and/or the Burton Batmobile? The Bat and Burton Batmobile are both too expensive and WAY too large for my display room, and I've got no space for yet another Tumbler. Personally, other than the black Tumbler, I'll only be getting the Bat-pod, TDKR Batman [if and when it's released], and Catwoman.
-
Thanks for telling me the approx. size of the Bat-pod; looks compact enough to fit even on my bookcase. TDKR version Batman hasn't been announced yet. In fact, the BTS pics of Batman look rather similar to his TDK version. but admittedly, I wasn't paying much attention when I saw the pics. Either way, seeing how they milk popular molds, HT is bound to cash in on the movie's popularity when it arrives on cinemas and release a Batman fig, be it a reissue of the TDK version or a TDKR version. Yeah, the Batwing is confirmed for release, as are the cammo version Tumblers. Be ready to pay through your teeth for one of the former, and good luck trying to find space for that thing. BTW, this just in: the Burton Batmobile is said to be TWICE the price of the Tumbler. Good thing I prefer the more realistic and rugged design of the latter.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
GU-11 replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Started watching Naruto for the first time. I can see why it's such a huge success. The whole ninja universe is very well designed and intricate, with fights between ninjas relying heavily on deception and subterfuge. Animation holds up well even after all these years, and the characters are very likeable. -
What are the chances of a DMK-03 model kit in the form of either Megatron as his third incarnation, or Shockwave? I heard Optimus and Bee sold very well, which should encourage TakaraTomy to look further into the line.

Same here. Just some panel-lining and a simple matte coat, and it looks just as good as if were professionally painted. I recently made the mistake of impulsively buying three Kotobukiya Border Break kits that were on massive discount, only to realize the amount of seam sealing, detailing and painting I'd have to do to get a decent-looking fig. The newer ones like the Shrike Type V and Heavy Guard II are still quite manageable, but the Zebra 41 is going to be a bit of a modeling workout, and it's ironically my favorite design of the three. Back on topic, Gunpla are IMO the easiest kits to build and get a professional-looking fig with the least amount of work.

Yup, but I doubt I'll be getting the Bane fig. At most, I'll get the TDKR version of Batman to drive the Tumbler, and that's it for the Batman franchise. Somehow, Bane just doesn't stand out for me unlike The Joker. Without having seen the movie, he's just an angry looking bruiser in a mask and a trenchcoat. I'd seriously consider Catwoman and the Bat-pod, though. I've seen Anne Hathaway's character riding on the Bat-pod in some BTS pics. Should be interesting. You've got the Bat-pod, right? How big is the thing, BTW? I might still be able to afford some display real estate on my entertainment cabinet.

For a while there, I wasn't sure if you were referring to anime52k8 or me, until I remembered linking that hobby site. In any case, you're welcome. Yeah, a lot of these guys are hardcore HT collectors.

Different HT's have their own set of QC issues. The Jill Valentine Battle Suit version fig I have has a rather frustrating problem. The right loop holster for her submachinegun is too small for the handle. I found out too late to get it exchanged, which means I'll either have to do a little DIY sewing, or leave it like that. The Batman and Comedian figs are also infamous for "oily" rubber suits. For some unknown reason, after a while the rubber on their suits release a slick, oily substance, after which thge rubber slowly discolors and disintegrates.

$36 plus shipping sounds fair, even for a potential KO. I say go for it.

It's made by Hot Toys but distributed by Sideshow [i think]. As for whether it splits up or more precisely, to convert into the "Batmissile" as seen in Batman Returns, I doubt it. What it seems to have, is the ability to be displayed with a pair of machineguns and "bat-disc" launchers. Of course, light up headlights and tail lights are a given. The Tumbler doesn't even have the inclining seat feature seen when Batman uses the cannon, not that it would have made any difference on display. Seems like HT isn't big on gimmicks. That said, the Tumbler doesn't really have any "showy" features, as even the main cannon is recessed.

Good chance they will. The Iron Man mold has been mercilessly milked, with custom paint jobs, bundles [the gantry version] and so-called limited edition models. They even came up with a repaint of War Machine recently. Same with the Nolan Batman [first version, TDK version, etc.] BTW, I pre ordered the Tumbler myself at the local hobby store. Only thing now is to decide where to place it--damn, this thing is almost as big as my dog! And now that this can of HT-flavored Pringles has been opened, I'm bound to pick up the Batman Rises [is that what part 3 is called?] version of the Caped Crusader.

That is one HUGE figure. -
The best one can hope for in getting adult collector grade movieverse figs, is for TakaraTomy to give the Bayverse designs the G1 Masterpiece treatment a decade or so down the road. It was near impossible for the CG artists to get a flawless, proportionate transformation on the bots, much less to build an actual toy. And what with Hasbro's need to adhere to budget and child safety laws, we're lucky some of the toys look as good as they do.

It's a good thing I prefer mecha to human figures--TF's, Macross and mecha model kits are my kryptonite. But even for someone like me, I'm falling deeper and deeper into the HT pit. It started out with a Bruce Lee Enter the Dragon fig, and then a Jill Valentine Battle Suit version fig, and now I'm eying the Tumbler. Wow, Barbie dolls for men...not exactly a flattering term, but as long as she's warming up to the idea of them. I've got an idea for the Tumbler or Keaton batmobile, though. Get a custom-sized glass case made, and use it as a coffee table while displaying the thing inside. I've seen a Korean SW nut do this for his Millenium Falcon in his living room. Looks absolutely gorgeous. You might want to try this idea yourself, Kicker. If anything, it'll slowly numb your wife to the presence of HT products in your living room.
-
The hobby store at my place is the country's official HT distributor, so if there's any chance I might be able to get a Tumbler, it'll be through the store. BTW, the forum I linked to is also an online shop--it takes international orders, too. Just go to the homepage, and you can check out some of the stuff that's up for pre-order. Alas, neither the Tumbler nor the Keaton Batmobile are available yet. Not sure about Sideshow, though. BTW, what, are these HK ebayers triads or something? How'd they their hands on a product that's not even released yet?

My Nora type had a split hinge on the left wing, and the right hinge had stress marks. I had to send it back to HLJ, who brought it back to Yamato for repairs.

Something about either toy regulations or Hasbro's company policy requiring gimmicks and features to be included for toys above a certain price range. Either that, or it's their belief that kids like lights and sounds on toys, which is true to a certain degree.

Need advice on those damn energy lines on Jehuty
GU-11 replied to GU-11's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Thanks for the explanation. I guess I'll pass on the modeler's knife and go for the design knife. I've already got the Swiss Army knife for nub cutting and paring, and I only need something for precision work such as cutting decals. Wow, those lines are clean and crisp! You literally solved my biggest problem regarding the kit; those thin narrow lines on some of the parts. I sat there for hours looking at the thin lines on those parts, dreading the thought of masking them on both sides. Masking the whole area and slicing into the lines, I can deal with, but on both sides....aw, hell no. I'll still try masking some of the more prominent, deeper lines and then slicing through them, as it allows me to use thicker paint on some of the lines. I prefer a more solid and brighter color for the energy lines. If using thinned paint on the narrow lines will work, then all my problems are solved. I owe you one, Electric Indigo! BTW, that's an awesome build, and it's a resin kit, to boot. I can't tell from the pics in your flickr account, but is it articulated or static? -
Batpod...damn, I wanted one of those. The Tumbler is getting a relaunch, BTW. Tempting, but it's gonna tear a huge chunk out of the fig funds.

Need advice on those damn energy lines on Jehuty
GU-11 replied to GU-11's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
That explains everything. The most popular brands of model making equipment we get here are Japanese, with Tamiya and Gunse Sangyo dominating the market. American brands are not easily found here. BTW, what's the difference between Tamiya's modeler's knife and design knife? Not sure which one to get if I come across them. -

How could I have not noticed these at the Tamiya store? Next time I go there, I'll have to ask the salesguy about one of these. BTW, I'm sure they do sell hobby knives here, but not necessarilly X-acto knives. I've searched several art shops, but none of them carry this brand. -
Heheh, I can see why she refused to budge on the living room. A whole dedicated Macross room, and some space in the home office...I've heard of some poor bastards who were only allowed the use of a single bookcase by their wives. Wait, do you mean it's a CD player that features multiple disc changing, or that this thing simply dispenses different CD's? If you meant the former [most likely] it was pretty popular back in the day, thanks to the fact that VCD's required two discs or more to store just one movie.
