Noob with some paint questions 1/60 VF-1S unassembled kit
GU-11 replied to KenjaminLinus's topic in The Workshop!
I recommend clear coating the whole thing. Depending on what the finish is on the plastic, you might get a different finish on parts you've clear coated and the parts that you left alone. I've only ever used Tamiya TS clear coats and Gunze's Mr. Clear UV cut, and both are pretty good. -
The printer software automatically calculates and builds the necessary support structure. The maximum is W130mm X L130mm X H130mm. Diagonally, it's 140mm. Incidentally, I asked the guy if the small panel lines and details will be retained in a small 1/6 scale head. He said as long keep the thickness to 0.4mm, what you render is what will be printed. So yeah, I totally recommend this printer. It's also ridiculously fast in slicing. BTW, the auto leveling is super easy. There's this gadget you have to plug into the nozzle and then the back of the platform, and it'll automatically calibrate everything for you. NOTE: only the Plus 2 has this feature. You'll have to recalibrate manually with the Plus, which is a bot of a PITA. It's also super silent. Even with the windows closed and the AC turned on, I can't smell any fumes from the ABS.
-
It's ALIIIIVVVVVVVEE! The UP! Plus2 has arrived. From the guy's demonstration, it's very user-friendly, and just about as foolproof as it gets...basically 3D printing for dummies. That said, the sample bracelet he printed came off the rafting midway and the whole thing was screwed up. But what was already printed looked MUCH better than I expected. Not need for sanding whatsoever. IMO, Shapeways has got nothing on this. I'll try printing something again later and see how it goes.

It wasn't just hinted. In the 2nd Gig anime, it was shown that she was involved in a plane crash as a kid, and was one of only two survivors, the other one being Hideo Kuze. I haven't read the manga yet, but from what I've heard, the manga did not touch on her origins. The plane crash story was probably an original idea from the 2nd Gig anime only.

Me, too. Besides, I don't see any games I like yet coming out at the same time as the PS4. SW BF4 and FF XV won't be released for a while yet. Even then, I'll probably buy the games first and wait for the price of the PS4 to drop.- 6831 replies

Same situation here. Tamiya's the easiest brand I can find, and even then, it's a little out of the way. I heard rumors that Tamiya reformulated the TS paints to fix this problem in 2012 or so; I guess it's true after all.
-
Yeah, Tamiya paints (acrylics, at least) totally suck as far as hand-painting goes. I don't have much trouble AB'ing them. Although I can;t make a comparison, as I've never used Gunze bottled paints. The thing with TS spray paints is that if you plan on applying a clear coat, you have to do it within fifteen minutes after applying the final color coat, or at least when it's touch dry. This is to ensure that the color and clear coat dry/offgass at the same rate. If the paint and clear coat dry in different stages, you risk cracking the clear coat. With Future, most say you should wait about two weeks or more before application.

I've heard plenty of theories that this is mostly due to MS's obsession with getting rid of game piracy, which doesn't surprise me. Plenty of people here chose to buy a 360 mostly because they could no longer play copied games on the PS3. I chose the PS3 mostly because 1. I avoid pirated games as the low quality discs add to the wear and tear of the console's laser (or whatever it's called), and 2. The rampant RRoD reports put me off. I was just telling the same thing to Duke Togo. Xboners (yipes!) are royally screwed when the XBone becomes obsolete (pun too appropriate to be unintended). I'd say they've been...(puts on sunglasses)...Xboned! YEEAAAHHHHHH!- 6831 replies

You're certainly justified in doing so. Every forum I visit, I see people just about ready to tear the MS execs a new one. The only ones defending the XBone are trolling so hard, it's hard not to think they were paid by MS. That comment you made about the servers got me thinking. When the Xbox one becomes obsolete, do they shut down the servers and render the machines unusable? That means your whole library of old favorites goes down the drain. Honestly, I'm not sure if Sony won this console war, or MS simply shoved a grenade in its own mouth and blew itself six ways to hell.- 6831 replies

My post wasn't in defense of XBox One in any way--I was replying to anime42k8's post on keeping all his Halo games. The only console I ever planned on buying is the PS4, even before all this big brother Kinect "phone home" nonsense. In fact, I've never been a fan of XBox, and I've NEVER used any online modes in all three PS consoles. A console that forces you to go online everyday isn't likely to win me over, to say the least.- 6831 replies

I still have games dating back to the Mega Drive 2 era. If games are expensive in the US, there's even more expensive here when you factor in import taxes and the seller's profits. I only buy games I really like, and still replay many of them today, even old PS era ones like Street Fighter Alpha 2. BTW, I had a similar experience with games I lent to a friend, though I managed to get it back in the end. I had to waylay the guy and follow him home to get it back.- 6831 replies

Yup, that's what I think, too. That exec guy seems to be fighting for his life/job/retirement plan right now, putting on what's supposed to be a brave face and fully backing the "clingy girlfriend" online features (call me everyday at this time, or else...), but I doubt it'll hold for long. Most likely, they're still figuring out how to back down gracefully, and still save face. But if they love the game so much, why would they want to resell it in the first place?- 6831 replies

So MS's answer to the question is a defiant middle finger in the face of its customers? The guy barely stopped short of saying, "Don't got internet? Then buy another 360...ya bunch of cheap-ass backwater hicks." Buy another 360? No. But I can see a lot of people going for the PS4, instead.- 6831 replies

I would have thought so too, if I hadn't already known it was supposed to be a Catwoman themed statue. It's those two triangular protrusions that give the impression of cat ears. Then again, if I hadn't known who it was supposed to be, those things might as well have been horns.

Not exactly a ZOE kit, but since there's no model kit thread, I'll just put this here. Looks pretty damn cool, IMO: http://collectiondx.com/news_item/61113/frame_arms_rf12_wilbernine_kotobukiya

Nice box; very Takara...in fact, I'd say it's better even than Takara, what with the illustrations separately wrapped around the box. Definitely worthy of a high-end toy.- 16945 replies

That hardly resembles her, and the only hints are the vaguely cat-shaped symbol on the backrest (or whatever it's called) and her goggles (and that's only if you go by the Arkham Asylum/City games). Honestly, a 3rd party company could actually market this using a different name, DC wouldn't be able to sue.

Glad to see that Sony didn't follow MS's path. FF XV, huh? Haven't watched the trailer yet, but if it's anything like Versus XIII, I might just buy it along with the PS4 when it or Battlefront 4 is released, whichever comes first. Very happy to hear that the PS4 comes bundled with a HDMI cable; when I bought one for the PS3, it cost me about 66 USD. Speaking of price, 500 USD sounds more or less like what I paid for the PS3--pretty sure prices will drop in a year or so.- 6831 replies

Finally figured it out. The skin was created as a separate group, which was why solid inspector saw it as part of the model. I exploded it and then grouped it as part of the model--problem solved. ...several minutes after which I ran into new problems. Having trouble warping/reshaping the proportions of the model. The move tool is just plain messy. I'll need to scrounge around for a suitable plugin. Also, sometimes soap skin bubble refuses to skin a gap. It keeps telling me "you must select three or more edges in a closed loop," when I already did just that. Any help is appreciated!

Like I said in the last post...each new game up until FF X, which was when the tie-ins/offshoots/franchise-milking started. With that said, if they intend to keep milking XIII, I guess putting FF to sleep is really the best thing to do. Last I heard, they fired the CEO and appointed the company accountant as his replacement. Wonder how that's working out for them.- 6831 replies

From what I've seen so far of Ferrari, they do seem pretty snobbish and pushy. I read something about the company demanding that Bay name the Ferrari TF in DOTM Dino before allowing him to use the car in the film.- 16945 replies

Technically speaking, there's really no point in killing the FF franchise, as new each game is set in a different universe...at least, until they got greedy and started making offshoots with FF X, VII (Dirge of Cerberus etc.) and XIII. Overall, though, most FF games only share the same title but have nothing in common (except for their respective offshoots and minor homages, obviously).- 6831 replies

A question for Sketchup experts out there. I used soap skin bubble to cover a curved part of an object, and it works fine. But when I used solid inspector to check for "leaks", it lit up the "skin" made by soap skin bubble even though the area is completely covered. Is this just a false alarm on solid inspector's part?
