Well, the pencil trick sounds like a much better alternative. Just any old 2B pencil or does it have to be a certain grade? Is it possible to seal it with a clear coat or hand-painted FFP?

SnJ Powder? Where can I buy those? I did search for it at HLJ and Hobby Search, but neither seem to carry it. Hopefully I won't have to import from the US; shipping to Malaysia will probably be more expensive than the item itself. I've also heard something about rubbing graphite powder from pencil shavings on a gloss black surface can give a dark chrome effect. Does that actually work?

Looking at all those pics of Mospeada Ride Armors made me wish for something else from Arcadia: What else? 1/6 scale Ride Armors!

I'll definitely let you know the results once I try it on something. Theoretically, the added adhesion from the flat coat, coupled by FFP sealing the Sharpie's metallic ink, should make for a reasonably durable finish. One thing I know for sure that would never work are silver or gold "gel-type" ballpoint pens. Those things never dry on anything but paper. I was stupid enough to use those when I started out building Gunpla, and ended up with a huge mess I had to clean off before starting again. BTW, would you know of any good alternatives to Alclad and kosutte ginsa for realistic metal finishes? It's next to impossible to import Alclad (haven't tried to do so, but it seems most online shops don't ship volatile liquids by air), and HLJ doesn't sell kosutte ginsa. Nice! I'm actually tempted to start on my MG Aile Strike right now. The only thing keeping me from doing so is that I've already got two other builds going on, and probably shouldn't start a third one.

Thanks for explaining, Nekko! I wonder if lightly sanding the area of priming it might help with better adhesion. I almost always flat coat my Gundam kits, so touching up after flat coating might help with the adhesion. Do you think that might work?

Is it possible to brush a coat of FFP over a part that's been painted over with a Sharpie? I've heard that FFP doesn't work with Gundam markers, and will dissolve it if you tried to clear coat FFP over them. Does this happen with Sharpies, too?

Transformers: Age of Extinction - in theaters June 27, 2014
GU-11 replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
As usual, they crammed too many ideas into the movie. There was only enough screentime for one idea, but they decided to follow through with just Galvatron and left the knights thing hanging. Figured he would be staying.- 950 replies

Robotech Academy - You want a new Robotech series...?
GU-11 replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I don't know nearly as much about RT and HG as most of you guys, but from the outset, the whole thing seems like a pointless venture. RT Academy, from what I've read, is neither a reboot or reinvention of RT, but some obscure offshoot of a long-dead 80's cartoon. What TV network in its right mind would even consider buying a series like that? It's dead in the water even if they manage to get enough money. The only ones who even know what Robotech is are the old fans from the 80's, and most of them live in South America. As for the live-action movie, if WB won't make one back when the popularity of giant transforming robots were at its peak (after TF1's success), it seems unlikely that they'll be making one now. Or are they just waiting for TF movies to turn stale, so there'd be less competition?- 2025 replies

My pleasure, Technoblue. For once, I'm actually glad to see Bee on the shelves because everything else except the Dinobots was crap. I enjoy light piping on my figs too, but Hasbro has to stop neutering them. It's practically the worst of both worlds where the back half of the head is clear, but the eyes are painted over. So, if you're OCD like me, you end up having to either trying to remove the paint from the eyes, or try to find the closest color to the "helmet" and paint up the back of his head. Space Brick doesn't look so much like a Space Brick anymore in these new photos. But as cool as he looks, I've absolutely no nostalgic attachment to the Japanese TF cartoons. And I know he won't be cheap. Plus, I don't really like his colors. He might look really cool to my eyes in gray, but I'll probably like it a lot less when it's colored up.- 16945 replies

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
GU-11 replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Yeah, maybe I should stream a few eps of both show before getting the box sets. Fortunately for me, I live in Malaysia, and for some reason, the box sets are dirt cheap; about 10-15 USD a set. They're not pirated, as they're sold at a pretty large video store, and have the original hologram stickers and all. -

I felt like doing some charity work and decided to clear the store shelves of one more AOE High Octane Bumblebee. No, seriously, it's a pretty cool toy. Thanks to the design know-how acquired from the many Bees that came before him, he's got a pretty solid design. Paint apps are painfully lacking when it comes to his metallic parts, but that's what my airbrush and compressor are for. Hasbro has yet to make up its mind on whether to give its toys light piping or painted eyes. The back half of his head is clear, but his eyes are painted light blue. Thankfully, there's very little of that Cheetos yellow/orange on his "stealth mode" design, so I can repaint the parts with some Tamiya camel yellow. YMMV, but as far as I'm concerned, he's likely the only AOE fig worth getting.- 16945 replies

The new design's grown on me after watching 3 of the 4 Arise episodes. I just hope MF has plans to make that red bike she rides. ...which reminds me, I'm still waiting for MF to hurry the f**k up and release that damn BRS trike from the video game.

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
GU-11 replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Just watched GitS Arise - Border 3. It might sound like blasphemy, but I'm beginning to warm up to this version of Motoko, almost more than SAC Motoko. The Logicoma and her bike look pretty cool. Getting pretty used to the funny hair by now. Border 3 delves a little more into her private life, but I still prefer the Hideo Kuze story arc in 2nd Gig. Still, Mamoru Oshii's version if my favorite by far. Are Knights of Sidonia and Kill la Kill worth buying the DVD set for? -

There were statues and non-transforming figs based on MP-01? I'm glad I never saw those. But yeah, I totally agree with what you said. I can understand that they're trying to give it the illusion of being able to transform, but they're going about it in a very wrong way. Like you said, where they should be using real vehicle parts or adding wires and tubes where appropriate, they simply copied the MP-10 toy, compromises and all. But don't be surprised if this actually sells. Somewhere out there, there are rich TF completionists waiting to throw somecash at any new TF product.- 16945 replies

A little late to the party, but damn, I'm glad I have my MP-10. The whole "wearing dead seekers" thing kind of reminds me of this: Speaking of which, why does every non-transforming G1 Optimus figure have to be based on MP-10? Might have piqued my interest if it were the IDW version.- 16945 replies

I'm not too sure, but I think that tactical suit is what she wears during missions in both seasons. And yes, I'd also have preferred it if Max Factory made the fig wearing the tactical suit. The pic with the bald guy is from the 2nd Gig episode called "Cash Eye", if I'm not mistaken.

All Things Videogame Related: EXTREME VS!!
GU-11 replied to Keith's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Just set up my new super slim PS3. Plugging in the power cable behind the entertainment shelf was a bit of a nightmare--and I'll have to be doing a lot of heavy lifting and moving again when I buy the PS4 this Christmas. I underestimated the noise of the Blu-ray drive. Initially I though the ambient noise of my AC wil drown it out, but I could clearly hear that soft but high-pitched whine above the low hiss of my AC unit. Aesthetically, though, I don't get all the complaints about it looking "cheap" and "plasticky". Sure, the 1st gen's design is the most elegant, but the super slim looks pretty nice to my eyes. Calling it a George Foreman grill seems kind of harsh. Either way, it's nice to be able to do some gaming again. I haven't played Uncharted before, but I agree that the combat and stealth system in TLoU is a bit of a chore. I kept playing for the story, and it became more of an interactive novel for me. Despite being somewhat repetitive, I also found Deus Ex Human Revolution's stealth system to be more fun.- 6831 replies

Must have something to do with regional codes, or something. But I thought PS3's were region-free? They'd better not repeat that same solo campaign thing with the hybrid-3D style fighting for story mode. The controls were clunky as fu*k. Just stick with what works and give me good old fashioned 7-stage random fights until the boss in story mode, and Tekken force as a mini game. As for the trailer...damn, that is one dysfunctional family. Nice, though.- 6831 replies

The saddest thing is that they had a really good opportunity to use that organic hand that everyone's been complaining about, but didn't. Why even give him an organic hand is it's not going to be used as a plot device? Hell, even a mention by Keaton that it makes Murphy more personable when he shakes hands with the general public would have been good enough. It would have perfectly illustrated the whole human vs machine theme this movie seemed to be harping on about. And yeah, I gotta admit Jackson really hammed it up in that movie. Didn't really bother me, though. It's just Samuel L Jackson being Samuel L Jackson.

Why's Prowl missing on the cover? They could've put him behind Bumblebee--little guy's so short that you'd still be able to see almost than half of Prowl.- 16945 replies

It's really not a good sign if the company that's producing this (what was this supposed to be funding again?) has so little faith in the product that they're unwilling to use their own money for it.- 2025 replies
