Truth~ In the end, the results don't lie. As Red Wolf said, Basara is an abnormality. Right from the beginning he was shown to be different and unique even in comparison to others who can use song energy. Saying he is anything but the ultimate and best representation of Anima Spiritia doesn't seem plausible.

Your making an assumption that they could have done anything besides making them sleep. Basara succeeded in stopping them and did it permanently(In about the same time span with less knowledge and understanding of the PD than the PC had). Putting them to sleep did nothing but buy the PC time at best. The idea that that is a success goes against what Basara himself represents anyway. He didn't recognize the PD as enemies to be defeated, he valued them as he did any other and worked so that his message would get through to them. This in and of itself is why he represents why Humanity has surpassed the PC in some ways~ Such as the wisdom that wars are meaningless and something greater can be used to resolve conflict. That song can connect and move people to their core. I never said that it was to free the PD, it's something much more universal that can be experienced by everything and anything. What that realization is, is more along the lines of Basara's exceedingly pure spirit and conviction to his way of life, culture and beliefs. He knows some greater truth that people seem to not understand and he is the one who ends up delivering the message. A message that calms the hearts, heals the spirit and brings people together. As far as I'm concerned, that was one of the messages Macross 7 gave us and I feel that he really is the ultimate realization of that. I don't understand how you are trying to detract from his accomplishment with that. It was his song and soul that got through to them. He touched them and made them understand him and respond. He was quite literally the only thing protecting Macross 7 from becoming cattle and facing defeat. You are not giving him his due and probably did not understand him properly if you only saw him as a plot device to develop other characters. I also don't feel that Macross 7 was weak in terms of story. I personally feel the opposite and much enjoyed the deeper messages and symbolism in the show as they pertain to the Macross series.

I wouldn't worry about the continuity too much. Everything is meta-fiction simply because it's easier for Kawamori and crew to tweak things and release movie versions of the series with additional scenes (Would you want this movie to be a compressed version of the series with the exact same scenes?). This way they don't have to worry about consistency too much or their rabid fans who want to know why a character's appearance has changed or a scene is a little different. Ultimately, everything is true in the sense that the events all occurred at some point in Macross history as a general rule. Minmei sings to Zentradi, Basara is traveling the galaxy making people and Protodeviln listen to his song, Macross Frontier meets the Vajra, etc. Don't worry about finer details, because that's all that makes the respective versions unique. Just think of DRYL as another interpretation of the same thing. Ultimately the message is the same. Though DRYL has been recognized as a movie in the series before, but the lines get blurred as time passes and Kawamori doesn't really care. The Frontier movie will probably be the same. It's just as canon as anything else and reflects the same events of the Vajra meeting Macross Frontier. Also, seeing as how the movie isn't out yet, why speculate? Only Macross 2 seems to be considered a parallel continuity. I don't know why though, there's no reason it couldn't be a movie sequel to DRYL in the original continuity or something.

Who would that be exactly? Only Gepilnitch, right? Was the guy (Ivano Günter) even alive at that point though? Wasn't the body at the end basically a new body formed after he had combined with his true body and realized Basara's message? I'd have to question whether or not there was even an Ivano Günter by that point to be returned.

Except, Basara is by default the pinnacle of anima spiritia and it's successful realization. He's the very best, it's part of what embodies his character. Besides, where they all together failed, Basara succeeded and made the Protodeviln sing his song! FIRE!!!

Hmm, going by the idea that Sheryl is a modern day western pop star... should we be expecting her to get knocked up, shave her head and put on weight by 2061? Pending the divorce from Alto and horrid custody battle over the children, the galaxy tabloids will have a field day. "Sheryl Nome locks herself in bathroom with children and razor, refusing her lesbian lover access to their children!" Oh lord.

I thought about Brera/Sherl but it makes no sense that it would be developed even as a possibility. No sense at all. Do they even know of one another? I'm not surprised at Alto/Ranka development though, I always kinda thought she'd win. Not that Alto is good enough for either of them though. (I like the characters and their songs about the same. Not as good as Fire Bomber but there are some gems between them that I loved.) As much as I like Sheryl.... She needs to stop dressing like a stripper. I prefer Ranka's puffy dresses over that much (or little...) leather.

I think that's why most of us relented to either "Yes, we have surpassed them" or more specifically "Yes, in some ways, but not really technologically or in size".

Gamlin is awesome. I loved how he became a Basara supporter halfway through and even ended up educating Mylene about him. He's probably the most underrated pilot in Macross as well. Yes, unresolved. I think those wedding pics were dream sequences or possibilities. I gotta say though, there is a lot to pick on with Gamlin pic. It's kind of creepy with all the dead guys and protodeviln coming out for the event.

Grace was a pretty fail villain. It was so obvious from early on too. Anyway, do we know how the dimension eater works exactly yet? Also, did Briler(The Minmei/Train Otaku) assist grace? He didn't seem to really be on her side... but didn't he want the network too? Or something. I forget the specifics.
