Banshee's First Impressions of Macross 7!
Marzan replied to VF-15 Banshee's topic in Movies and TV Series
Macross 7 is an acquired taste, but once you like it, you love it. It's more about the feels than the logic behind it. It's not SDFM or Plus, but it has a charm that's hard to ignore. -

Aquarion is high mecha camp. And Aquarion EVOL takes that to the extreme. I'm glad Kawamori keeps some of his more crazy ideas for Aquarion without bringing them over to Macross. -

I'd do Black Lagooon before some of the others you mentioned. It's one fun series. -

Speaking of Claymore, the manga is ending in the next couple of days. I'm crossing my fingers for this to inspire a studio to do a second season (yeah right!) BTW, anyone else catch the ending of Terror in Resonance? Beautiful. Watanabe's still got it IMO. And on saturday he get's another finale with Space Dandy (that second season has been some of the most creative and experimental stuff I've seen in anime for years). -
When I saw U2 live for the first time (long before a camera on a phone was even a possibility) they did a short guitar only set where they played "Bad" and did a fabulous cover of Lou Reed's "Satellite of Love" Brings a smile to my face every time I remember.

I wonder how the dub is going to handle the couple of 'xenophobic' characters you get in MuvLuv. It must be a bit of a challenge for a dub director to get that right. No news of a sequel I suppose? On another matter, has anyone played a game called "Rage of Bahamut"? They're releasing a series based on this game in a couple of weeks and it looks like it might be a decent watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyalqGh5rvk#t=58 -
I think that might be a distinct possibility. It’s quite possible that overcome with guilt he also becomes the MC in his full right. Although with the ill will created by his recent actions I doubt a large part of the fandom would accept him as such.

When he saved Saazbaum I facepalmed. I actually said out loud. "He's going to regret that" I just didn't know how much he would. Aldnoah is a good series, but it gets let down by the poor characterizations. Slaine (better left unsaid), the Princess a Lacus Clyne clone and Inaho...well...I always though that at one point we'd get a big reveal on why he is the way he is, but nope. Nothing. Little or no backstory or character development. The only character that had any background to him besides Saazbaum, was Lieutenant Marito, but for some reason he simply stopped figuring in the later chapters. I thought he was going to be more important. I'll definitely catch the second cour, because I'm very curious about how they are going to move on from here (internet is rife with rumors of timeskip), but I do hope they flesh out whatever characters there are present more.

That Aldnoah Zero ending! I didn't see that coming at all. -
What's interesting here, is that Motoko Kusanagi's appearance is something that can change not only from one GITS production to another, but inside the very story itself. The relationship between her mind and her body has always been present as a theme. I wouldn't be surprised if one day we get a GITS where she's migrated into a different body with a completely different appearance.

I've always seen MOST anime movies that emanate from a succesful television series, as a 'suplement' to the series itself, no matter how hard they might try do be doing a 're-telling' or re-imagining'. Rahxephon, Eureka Seven, Macross Frontier and even lets face it DYRL...they all are kind of hard to follow if one hasn't seen the original material first. It's just really hard to compress the story told in 650 minutes into a couple of hours. -

I think you’re a bit confused. It’s not called Transformars, it’s called Terra Formars. So there is little surprise at there not being any transformable robots there. I’ve read some of the manga before and the story is quite meh. It’s a bit like Muv Luv. Lot’s of national stereotypes and a huge death count. You do get to learn all about the most dangerous insects on the planet though -

I've been personally a bit disappointed by Aldnoah. The story and animation are ok, but the characters are all pretty flat IMO. Inaho in particular. I don't mind having a stoic character as a lead, but his mixture of having a stone face and yet being consistently smarter and better than anyone else in the show doesn't make for interesting viewing. -

I have not watched Valvrave, but I get great pleasuare from shows that fall in the 'so bad it's good' category so maybe I should give it a looksie. Anyway, the next season will soon be upon us and I’m hoping that most of the stuff offered will be available via the known streaming services. http://anichart.net/fall Obviously at the top of the wanna watch list is Gundam Reconguista: the first Tomino directed Gundam series since Turn A. I’m extremely curious about how the old man handles himself with this one. I hope he’s still got it and provides us with a gripping story. Psycho Pass 2. Second season of Psycho Pass. Oh yeah! But I also want to see Kiseijuu / Parasite: I read the manga and it was a pretty entertaining story about parasites taking over the bodies of a lot of people in Japan. Pretty gory manga and I hope that Madhouse provides its usual level of quality for this one. Chaika: The little story that could from the spring season Inou Battle Wa: Looking at the plot and the character designs doesn’t exactly attract me, but Studio Trigger has kind of taken over the mantle of the most creative and electrifying studio from Gainax, so I want to at least check out a couple of episodes. -
I'm not quite sure how Yamato will work in a Hollywood setting. Somethings should just stay in animation IMO.

Take on Me and Thriller are probably the most legendary music videos ever made. But no music video brings a smile to my face like this one:

I'm glad I backed this. I hope that it can open the doors for some other screenwiters/directors that might want to do a project that is not considered "safe" by the classic anime production consortiums. It's gotten over 100 grand more than the goal with almost 43 hours to go. Edit: 878 thousand with over 12,000 backers was the final tally. A big success by any measure. They're now opening up on Paypal too to see if they reach their secondary objectives. I've been hearing that Netflix and Crunchyroll are interested in this too.
