The computer and electronics super geek thread
VF-19 replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I actually had a co-worker ask me that question, and I told her that it was far easier (and less time consuming) to get one on a back-to-school sale. The closest I've ever come to actually doing what you've suggested is taking apart my Dell to get to the RAM so I could double the on-board RAM. In retrospect, it wasn't hard, once I knew the tricks to getting the thing open without breaking anything. -
Battlestar Galactica Discussion IV with Blood And Chrome

Well, considering the awesomeness to dollar ratio, the kits are a bargain. The wait between said doses of awesomeness, however, induces withdrawal.- 696 replies

Battlestar Galactica Discussion IV with Blood And Chrome

Well, nice to know that they intend on releasing it at some point. Good thing they're spacing them out. I don't think I could take that much awesomeness in such a short time frame.- 696 replies

Battlestar Galactica Discussion IV with Blood And Chrome
VF-19 replied to 505thAirborne's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Well, has anybody tried asking them? They might say: "Why, yes, we are releasing a model of the Pegasus. Here's some prototype shots. Show your friends!" They may also say "no comment". They've got the license for the show, and given how popular the models have been (at Capcon Ottawa 2011, there were no less than 4 Mk2 Vipers on display), I'd put money on the Pegasus coming out soon.- 696 replies

And that's the root of the problem, bad distribution (that and stuffing 4 of one figure in a box, while having two unique figures). It's probably less of an issue nowadays, but in 1984, that could hamper one's ability to finish a combiner team. Also, does anybody have the website address of the knock off makers that makes good knockoffs of the G1 combiner teams? I wouldn't mind getting the Stunticons or Technobots, if I could without cleaning my wallet out...

Trust me, they care, especially when they're forced to sell the warmers at below cost just to get rid of them. I've seen how modern transformers are packaged, and it isn't pretty. Mind you, working retail does have its advantage, especially when I get first dibs on what comes in (that and taking peeks at the week's load). My own personal story with combiners is that I wanted to complete them, but in Canada, they were rather hard to come by. I only had Hotspot and Blades as a kid, as the rest never showed up. Heck, even completing the re-issue Bruticus from Robots in Disguise took me a while, as I had to wait for all the pieces to get to the floor.

It's because the retailers HATE traditional combiners. Imagine if you didn't ever get that one last piece, and you have a pile of incomplete combiner pieces doing shelf warming duties. You'll notice that, from the Energon line, they had 5 robot combiners, but in reality two of the limbs were repaints. Thus, it became possible to "complete" a combiner by buying a double, if you had to.

Yamato 1/60 VF-17 Nightmare Diamond Force

"Whoa, is that a MAXL over there?" Looking forward to my VF-17, even if I'm going to hate the bill... -
Well, I returned it... And didn't get another one. Kinda turned off at the damage. No stress marks on the piece that broke, it appears to have just crumbled.

Anybody buy a Hasbro masterpiece Rodiumus and have an arm snap off just from taking it out of the package?

That mishap was the result of an idiot at the controls and the fact that the system didn't do anything to remove said idiot's wings, despite numerous complaints and safety violations.

Oh the guy in the P-47 probably only did it once. I would not be surprised if his CO saw it and grounded him.

The computer and electronics super geek thread

Just like every other version of windows I've installed (although it was a little smoother). Just switch the boot priority in Bios, and let it do it's thing. Although, the last install of windows 7 I did have a tiny little hiccup. I forgot to update my bios when I bought a SSD, and I had to do a bios update and then reinstall, for windows to be installed properly. Other than my stupidity, it went perfectly. -

I've been using an OEM copy of Windows 7 and I've never had any problems with switching motherboards. I'm on my 2nd motherboard with this copy. At most, I've had to re-activate Windows 7, but that was through an online reactivation. I've also never needed to use a 2nd computer either. Since you're likely to be buying most of a new computer, you shouldn't have any problems getting an OEM copy of the OS. -

You could find a place that's selling an OEM copy of Windows 7. I paid $100 for my copy of Windows 7 home, with the purchase of a hard drive. It's exactly the same as a retail boxed copy, but you're required to buy the hard drive with it. Ask about it at the local computer shop. -
Oh, they were supposed to do that, but they only made the problem worse by being a bunch of rabid dogs. Gassing colonies has a tendency to make the spacenoids band together and keep Zeon limping along.

Thanks. I don't normally do cars, but I took on the challenge when my brother asked me to build a F40 for him. Found a really cheap Fujimi 1:16 superkit, and went to work. Nice! Is that a re-purposed Zip-drive I see there as a base?
-
I've put the Galactica aside, but my plan was to paint the base gold, mask the letters and various bits I want to remain gold, and then blast it with black. As of now, it's functioning as a paint stand for the model itself (hey, why not?). When I get to it, it'll be cleaned off and then painted up. Small update on the F40. Doors and rear bumper painted with the first yellow layer. I did those first because they're small, and thus, if I made a mistake, it wouldn't be a whole body I would have to strip to the primer. I tried Tamiya acyclic retarder, and it makes quite a difference in how the paints goes on. Looks like I'm on my first step towards a spiffy paintjob. Edit: Picture! I know, it's a bit big, but I'm really happy how smooth the paint turned out. If you're wondering why the door is yellow instead of red, the instructions call out for a layer of yellow, then layers of red. I tried it out on some white plastic (half white half yellow), and there's a subtle difference in the resulting top red layer. Dunno if real Ferrari's have a yellow base coat over the red, but it does look pretty nice.

Yamato 1/60 VF-17 Nightmare Diamond Force
VF-19 replied to charger69's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Because even Yamato employees cannot contain tears of joy at looking at the VF-17. It's a fact. -
True, I could buy another one, but not at the dirt-cheap price I paid for it (They go for about $100 at the local shops). So far, though, I've put the first coat of primer on, sanded, cleaned, and applied the second coat. Gonna go and give it a light sanding in a bit. At least Tamiya primer dries pretty quick.

Working on Fujimi's 1:16 Ferrari F40, a commission build for my brother. Commencing work on the body, and I'm a little terrified... I don't want to screw this up. My goal is to get the paint as perfect as possible (aka, I can see my face in it). I'll be glad when I'm done this.

I mean the engineer hypothesis. Personally, I have a sneaky feeling that they don't really HAVE to change the socket design as frequently as they do... -

Aside from forcing you to buy a new motherboard (and possibly memory) when you buy a new CPU (most of the time), is there any practical reason as to why the socket has to be changed? Could you take a modern intel chip, and put it in a LGA 775 package, and not suffer any performance loss? -
I pre-ordered Ozma, and now I'm considering cancelling the pre-order if I can't get any FAST or Armour packs for it... Stupid Bandai...
