Star Trek Into Darkness, in theaters May 17, 2013
Mommar replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Well, it was too angsty. Though people just started hating the story as well. I'm not old enough to have been exposed to the original Trek in anything other than crusty old reruns long after they originally aired but I can tell you I, and many others I attended college with, were inspired by Star Trek just the same. That was all based on TNG/DS9/Voyager era shows and some of the later original series films. It may sound like I'm not a fan of the JJ Trek but that isn't the case. I'm really excited to see if this one can be more than just an action film but I do feel the need to defend the originals as I think a lot of people are unfairly criticizing them.- 1020 replies

It's hard to compare the 17 and 19. Overall the 19 fits together better in all modes and definitely feels better engineered. The decision to not have the hip/intakes attach on the 17 in fighter and especially in Gerwalk means they can separate/droop (you will see some separation if you have them on a stand.) Also, the 17 just doesn't fit together as well in all three modes. The 19 looks perfect in all three modes and is fun to pose in Battroid (it absolutely sucks in Gerwalk) whereas some people don't like the interpretive look of the 17 in fighter but it poses and looks great in both Gerwalk and Battroid (it's still my most fun to pose in Battroid of all the 1/60's I own.)

Hardly every episode of TNG and on was THAT preachy. And as I already pointed out BSG also managed to ruin itself to half of it's viewership by it's third season to the point that sequels/prequels have no longer been worth putting on television. So far the "morality play" in JJ Trek is up for debate. That speech Kirk was handed about his father still rings in my mind, despite it being incredibly HEAVY handed and preachy in it's own right, we'll see if he can continue it on a more subtle tip (though based on the fact the exact same commander is still giving Kirk the third degree in the trailers so far I'm assuming that no there won't be any more subtly.) For the time being he made one Star Wars movie with Kirk and the Enterprise, that's hardly an argument for further relevancy or quality compared to forty plus years of inspiring Engineers and Scientists.- 1020 replies

Star Trek Into Darkness, in theaters May 17, 2013
Mommar replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
"But Star Trek, as originally conceived, and as you saw play out in all the other series, was really a morality play every week, and it was about an ensemble of players. They were exploring science fiction ideas, sociological ideas and moral ideas. That’s really what the shows are about, and the movies are just pitched in a different way and at a different audience." He's highlighting what the television series was about which is precisely was somebody else said they weren't, sociological ideas, moral ideas, etc... Arguing the new movies are better/more relevant makes no sense considering he says right there that the movies are aimed at a different audience.- 1020 replies

I know they're shaped different, I own three of them. But the transforming shield could actually transform too.

I really don't understand why they couldn't have included a small bit that slides so that the transformation shield centers itself as well.

Interesting. The other places I frequent online are complaining it's just a cheap Saw knock-off but most of the people here like it. Hmm...

On my F,S and P the left tail wing doesn't peg in as well. It can be done, but it takes some fidgeting to make it sit flush whereas the right tail wing just works.

It really wasn't that sought after until just recently. They even knocked the price down pretty cheap ($120) at HLJ a few years ago. That's when I decided to grab two more after paying full price for the initial release. I'm also decidedly more weird as I don't put the packs on them at all.

Missiles falling off is far less of an issue than one of three modes that's particularly broken.

I have three 11C's. I bought one first thing when it was released and there hasn't been any yellowing. They're pretty cool though the age of the engineering is showing in spots like arm articulation. They look good in all three modes.

The VF-4 is the best toy Yamato produced IMO. They nailed Fighter and Battroid on the 19 but Gerwalk is lacking big time. As a fan of Gerwalk mode in particular who poses every one of the different variants in Gerwalk (I have one of each 1/60 from Yamato and Bandai in Gerwalk minus the VF-4, YF-29 and VF-27) it's one of the least fun and one of the most irritating to do anything with. That puts it out of contention for perfect in my book.

To be honest it looks pretty cool with the Fast Packs.

The Gundam stands hold the VF-4 just fine.

I'm still waiting on my panic bought VF-17D from AE. They took quite awhile to ship it. Over a week.

You're the first person I've ever heard say that about the CF 171 before.

Guardians of the Galaxy, on DVD/Blu-Ray December 9, 2014

Taking that one sentence out of context isn't really fair. I said that I haven't read nor heard of any of these characters. All I'm saying is that I've never been exposed to it in any of my time reading comics. That's the reason why I can't see how it's any good. I've never had anybody recommend them or anything. Completely off the radar to me.- 344 replies

Well here's a great comment from Ron Moore on why Star Trek the series was better than the movies (any of them) and what's wrong with the Abrams versions. http://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/scifi/ron-moore-tv-star-trek-movie-star-trek.html- 1020 replies

I still feel like the biggest loss of everything since Yamato went under is any more, or possibly unpainted versions of, the VF-4. We've already seen some pretty spectacular modifications to the 4G alone. I feel like that outside of the VF-1, and likely even more so if it were more affordable/available, we would see some pretty impressive VF-4 schemes/modifications. We've already seen people experiment with missiles, Fast pack modifications, not to mention Kurisama fricking nailing it with his head/paint scheme/decaling combo.

Looks like I'm wrong about some being available now. I thought there was a rush, panic, then more showed up. Looks like I'm wrong now.

But we already went through pre-order hell for this one back in January. It turns out there are still plenty available (last I checked) at Nippon-Yasan at the very least.

But at least a version 3 would be an upgrade...

That sucks. I suppose the other question is was it an original or was it one of the remakes? I've left my Double Nuts in Battroid because it's the only mode I can stand it in and so far the arms haven't self-destructed but then I don't tend to manipulate it at all. Perhaps if I tried to move the arms they would dissolve as well.

It is interesting to watch all of the stores start selling out and how many of these auction sites have suddenly been getting more activity on these toys. I wonder if any of the toy companies can take away any info. from this. Obviously there's a market for this stuff still... but only once the gift horse has been flogged to death?
