1. I've been watching "Balance of Terror". Fortunately, it's not as bad as I feared. Several shots do look like the old models and not cartoonih CGI (though one shot of the updated Bird of Prey was absolutely atrocious - bad paneling, overly dramatic lighting, it looked horrible). It still doesn't have the thumbs up from me, but I probably won't batty much about it. That's provided that this is exactly what the rest will be like. It's not bad, but I'll hardly be singing their praises like they expect. They're not all that prettier. They have changed some movement. it is a bit smoother. Still, I don't get why they couldn't have just restore the old effects like the rest of it. Why bother with this if they're not changing much besides a bit more detailing? I'm still guessing that it gives them an angel to market it, and that they wanted to redo the planets. Blending the effects probably wouldn't have worked or they figured, "We've come this far..."
2. So it was a new release as I thought. Awesome. I definately won't have to think twice when I find it. Oh, and thanks for the spoiler, Wolfx. I'd read a tiny bit before, didn't need the added details.
3. Indeed she is closer to 26 than 25. She's about 25 and 10 1/2 months. Still, that's far from the 27 stated. Oh well. I'll just sum it up as Kazumi just not actually doing the math. I know the translation is bad, but I was also going by the literal translation series. The line that's basically been confusing me is this one, "1 minute at sub-light speed means three months on the earth." I know they say they'll be gone three months (ever notice how most times the difference is 6 months?). Coach says the mission time is ten minutes. So I can only assume they're at sub light speed for two minutes total or something. But then how does twelve seconds add three months if one minute equals three months? I know I'm probably missing something, but it still confuses me a bit. I guess the important thing is that they were supposed to be gone three months but instead were gone six. Wolfx, the Top o Nerae Tribute video and the trailer are two vastly different things. Here's a trailer that's different from the streaming one, available on youtube. It doesn't seem to want to cooperate with Video downloader at the moment. Top o Nerae Tribute is a fan AMV made for Fanime 2002. My second anime convention. That year I decided to watch the semi-finals (this was back when the audience voted for them as well). I'm glad I did. Sadly, due to lack of familiarity on the part of the audience, I was about the only person cheering for it. That year, the best video at the con didn't make it to the finals. So if I hadn't gone, I would've missed it. Amusingly, I had heard of it shortly before they showed it. The creator was talking to a friend of mine, and mentioned he'd entered a Gunbuster video. I told him that I'd recently seen the series and loved it, so I'll probably really like it, especially given the music choice. He didn't seem to care. I was right too. Basically, it's a melding of Gunbuster with the theme to Edward Scissorhands by Danny Elfman. There's something about it that just works flawlessly. It affects me the same way as the series does. It just captures all the emotion of the OAV. Which is probably why only I loved it. I'm sure I was one of the only Gunbuster fans in the audience that night, and you most likely need to have seen the OAV to truly get the impact of the video. Sadly, the website it was hosted at is dead. It's still up at AMV.org. You have to register though, and I think they still have a brief waiting period for new accounts. It's totally worth it though. http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/me...info.php?v=8667 I'll see about uploading it elsewhere to those interested. I tried putting it on MySpace for my profile, but it wouldn't go. Any suggestions? I don't just want to slap it on YouTube. The quality is so-so enough(2002 technology). EDIT I grabbed the rest of the Gunbuster only videos there. I've only watched about two of them. I liked this one a lot. http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members/me...hp?vid_id=29391 It's not as good as Top o Nerae Tribute, but still great.
4. Wow... I don't know what say. If it makes you feel better, I missed both Kazumi's and Jung's actual and first birthdays, even though I've been a fan since about 2002, ever since I first saw it. So you've got me on that. I'm just glad I remembered Noriko's, since she is my favorite of the three. After I posted, I did listen to The Symphonic Poem, and watched the Top o Nerae Tribute video a few times. It still gets me everytime. I almost restarted this thread when I noticed the old one closed, but was too tied to do so. Not that I slept much. I sucessfully pulled off the Gunbuster marathon. Though delays caused by last minute chores caused me to finished at 12:12 am. Still, I don't think I've ever watched any series, even one only six episodes long, in complete back to back order. Really tugs at you. I usually don't get to watch may series ore than once. I usually am so backlogged that I don't have the time except for the occasional stand alone episode or movie. Gunbuster is the only series I've seen about four times. It may not seem like a lot, but it is when it comes to me. I'd like to add in that after collecting myself from the emotional finale, I've come to notice some possible errors surrounding Noriko's age. First off being the picture Admiral Takaya looks at in episode two. In it, she asks him to return or her eighth birthday. Going on info from the first and second episodes, the battle took place December 19th, 2015. That would place it well past her ninth. This I'll assume more as it's a sentimental keepsake from a previous year, and not a recent reminder of an upcoming event. More troubling is episode four. In it, Noriko makes a remark about being seventeen. At which point Kazumi points out that by earth time she's actually twenty seven. The date is given as July 31st, 2032. She's actually twenty five. The only thing I can think of is that Kazumi didn't actually do the math and simply added ten years to her physical age. That literally just occured to me. September 12th, 2006, that would place her as between fourteen and fifthteen by the time she enters the academy. Hmmm... Seems I may have figured it out, in a haphazard way. Still, when all is said and done, it may be the thirteenth as I post this, but still, Happy Birthday Noriko! Now if only I could figure out the Urashima reasoning of episode two. Three months a minute + ten minute, twelve second mission = Six months pass.... Hmm....
5. I agree with that sentiment. Personally, I've never had a problem with the old effects. The ship looked realistic enough, and while the planets needed a bit of work, it got the job done. Though I've always been in the camp that thinks when done well, a plastic model will always look more realistic than a CGI one. After all, it actually is real and tangible. In respect to Star wars, I think the old X-wings looked considerably better than the new CG ones. I'm sure I'll feel the same here. You'll probably see more detail as it's not filmed with forty year old cameras like the old, but CG always looks cartoonish to me nine times out of ten. They probably could've or should've smoothed out the movement. With the faker looking CG, it'll probably stand out more. I can't really tell from the trailer. Though I appreciate that they're going with the "we respect the original work so as not to think we should trumpt it". Part of the reason i hated the Star Wars SE so was the total slap in the face it was to the original artists. Especially Dykstra's masterful Battle of Yavin sequence. Personally, I just don't like the idea of CG in the classic series. Why couldn't they just restore it and let it be? I don't mind approaching it with the same mentality as the Director's Edition of The Motion Picture, i.e. just fixing what needs to be fixed. But CGI every exterior is pushing it. I just don't get why they'd CG it for what seems to be no other reason then to say, "look, it's CGI now, no more sixties effect, just replicas of them". The whole, "make their mouths water" line pretty much sums it up. "People think CG is cool, let's CG it". While at the same time fearing such a backlash as to keep it relatively the same. So all in all it's just another reason to say, "Watch this!" As for the other parts, the remastered imagery is great. I remember back when they did the Star Trek Special Edition run for the SCi-Fi channel. I recored the whole run with Shatner hosting. The image is a plus and makes me glad I haven't bought the series yet. The redone sore I'm a little iffy about. I've never been a fan of remixes when it comes to classic audio. Though it sounds like they're trying as hard as possible to keep it accurate. Assuming they suceed, and not decide to remix the whole thing in 5.1 for absolutely no good reason, I should have no problem with it. Bonus points is the eventual DVD release includes the original audio (I doubt it though). So really, the only thing I'm not liking here is the CG. Though that's to my natural aversion to pure CGI. In the end, I liked what they did with TMP, but I just don't see the point here other then to say, "Don't watch this on the Sci-Fi channel or G4, watch this version, it's got shiny new Enterprise!" As for the Enterprise episode, what's this "Enterprise" that you speak of? I've never heard of such a series. Well, at least it's not like the original gets locked in a vault never to be seen again... Sniped! I walked all over the Air and Space Museum years ago, yet saddly missed the room it was in (it was a goal too). I never knew they did that. That does piss me off. Geez. Like I said above, I haven't really seen much of the footage, but I do agree that if they were going to do this, they probably could've smoothed it out. It's really hard to tell anything from these videos. EDIT: Reading the above IGN artical, they claim that they have indeed smotthed out the movement. I also take issue with saying they'll be prettier. Prettier in that they won't be unrestored footage? (duh) Or prettier as in CG supposedly looks better than models? Going from the little I've seen, some shots look great, others look downright nasty. For all the talk about not wanting it to be jarring and to emulate the original, it still stands to wonder why they just didn't fix the errors and restore the rest. It seems that the biggest change is to the planets. I loved how over the line about keeping the new effects as faithful as possible, they show a shot of a planet on the viewscreen where the entire composition has been vastly altered.
6. HAPPY BIRTHDAY NORIKO!!! HAPPY SECOND BIRTHDAY JUNG!! How will you celebrate the day? I'm going to at least marathon Gunbuster. If I can, I'll also catch up on Diebuster as well.
7. Ok, just a heads up, but there's a pretty god awful version of Fly High on that disc. A really squeeky vocal version. Basically a Nono kareoke ersion. Boy does it sound like it too. It's somewhat amusing in a campy way, but also somewhat insulting to such a great song. The last track is awesome though. Even if I can't understand most of it. "Super Buster Cross! Omega Flash!!!" Out of curiousity, has a soundtrack ever been released for this series? I'd really like to get the arranged versions of the classic score. Wolfx, I look forward to your updates. How did the trailers look?
8. Avoid that thing like the plague. It's dreadful and a complete waste of money. 424903 I wouldn't go that far, but I do loath the flimsy leg joint. I don't regret getting it though. I'd love to get the previous one. It should help in designing my eventual costume though. The Noriko statue's worth the $35 I paid for it at AX. It pretty much made the con for me as I'd been looking all over for it. I still haven't watch episodes 4 and 5 subtitled, and Diebuster 6 is out... I think I'll wait until it's subbed, then watch the whole thing in one fell swoop. Those Nono figures look pretty sweet. I'll definitely get the BOME one, as I really like the figures of his I already have.
9. More stuff to get. I finally got some stuff at cons this year. Three of the little figures (Gunuster, Noriko, and Kazumi. I just need Jung and some varients now) at Fanime. The Xebec at Sacanime. It looks great but I'm highly disappointed in the joints. The left leg went loose after about five minutes out of the box. It really makes keeping it standing a pain. At AX, I finally got the Noriko statue. Hopefully, I'll be able to afford one of these transformables. While I have little need for a DVD, I'm too much of a fan not to at least buy it. I just wish I was at AX the day it was announced. I had prior commitments. At least that's better than having been there and missing the panel.
10. I finally got my PC back, so I was able to finish the series. Superb ending to a superb series. Here's hoping to another series.
11. So it was announced Sunday? No wonder I missed it. I even checked ANN that night, the Bandai section mentioned nothing of this. Just their end of con licensing run through. I only learned of this about an hour ago since info at the con doesn't circulate well. If it was announced Sunday, there was no way I could make the panel. Sounds like it leaked that night though. Which would explain why ANN made no mention. I was really hoping to be there whenever it was announced. Sucks more seeing as I was at the con too (and not, say Otakon which I'm not attending). At least I wasn't in attendence at the time. Still, after hearing how much crap Bandai gave Manga to get it back, I'm not surprised. I've pretty much known for the last six months. I was all but certain Bandai would release it themselves. It's who I'd want to release it [Honneamise orAnimeigo]. Here's hoping for the full Honneamise treatment. Even I'll rebuy it. I even finally got my Noriko statue on Saturday. I found one dealer that had it. So it was indeed in the cards. Also, what this about a compilation film I'm just hearing about. [as much as I hate that site...] http://forums.animeondvd.com/showflat.php?...&fpart=all&vc=1 Rerecorded audio with the original cast and everything... I don't remember hearing about that here.
12. I'd wondered when they'd get to this. I shall wath it soon enough.
13. I have the Renewal P1 OST as well. Happened to get it by chance on ebay. I never entirely knew what it meant by sound renewal. I have the original P2 OST. I woudn't mind checking out the Renewal version. Shame I hear they didn't include the original audio though. I like having the original mix as well. I only have a dub tape of this, so i may pic this up, being the Patlabor fan I am. Shame I didn't enter the ANN contest. Judging by the third place winner, I would've been a shoe in.
14. I was wondering the same thing myself. The only thing I could come up with is that the remaining crew committed suicide rather than suffocating, leaving breathable air. 406523 According to the manga, they emptied some of their tanks into it. I've been watching it lately. It one of the few shows I'm really following. Episode was great. Revy's real name is apparently Rebecca. Maybe it's supposed to be Reby then.
15. I'll have to look into it. The previews I've seen so far have been rather bland. Too much CGI for my liking. The rep at SacAnime kept telling me that since it "common" that I shouldn't take that as a big deal (we went into more detail, but that was the jeist). Though what irked me in his presentation was how he showed some Mospeada and said "This was the state of the art in 1984". So he calls a mid budget 30+ episode TV "the state of the art of its time", then compares is to a modern, high budget OAV/Movie? WTF? I prefer the look of Mospeada to be honest.
16. Anyone heading to Fanime this weekend? Apparently they're showing Diebuster. They claim to be showing episode 5, which isn't fansubbed yet. I'm hoping to find something related in the dealers room. though I won't hold my breath.
17. I was there. After five years of meeting her without seeing her perform, I finally got to. Just another part of a near perfect day. I was the guy sitting in the front on the ground in the flame sleeved suit. I liked her comment on dreams coming true in adulthood.
18. Translationwise, I know Bochan Bird does text translations for the Eva mailing list. You might went to try digging through the archives. http://eva.onegeek.org/
19. Funny thing, the same thing happened to me. Awesome model. Thanks for the pics.
20. Just checked it. There are in fact six seeds. Surprising, given the torrents age.
21. I'll definitely pick up Golion, and probably Dairugger. Neither have even been fansubbed, unlike Tekkaman Blade and Yamato.
22. Back in January a 300mb version was posted on DATorrents. It's a laserdisc rip, and it's much better looking than any other version I'd seen. Especially the old RM. http://www.datorrents.com/download.asp?id=..._%26_IV.torrent The tracker's still up, but I don't think there are any seeds left. If anyone wants it, let me know and I'll retransfer my copy to my HDD and seed it.
23. Do me a favor, and I am asking you this as one of the owners of the GB group at Yahoo. Please do not post those images on the group. I am currently trying to get ahold of original photographer to obtain copyright permission for use on my site. I will let you know when it clears. 378970 Agreed. While they are posted on a public forum, I'd ask permission of the photographer/cosplayer before posting to something like Yahoo.
