The Aim for the Top! Gunbuster Thread v2.0
Mercurial Morpheus replied to Noriko Takaya's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Exactly how it balences out. Though at the rate the torrents going, I'll be lucky if it's done by the first release. I'm prioritizing Gunbuster, as i can watch it without subs (my R0 set confirms this). The site also the R1 release. I'm tempted to grab disc one to see about doing an audio swap if it's within my skill. KAA released a h.264 release of the R1, and they corrected the music. Of other note, though I don't need the competition , I'd be remiss to not bring this up. Broccoli is having a t-shirt design contest. Gunbuster only, no Diebuster allowed. No real rules other than that and the chevet that you're submitting a concept and the final shirt will use official art only (I wonder if screencaps count...). Contest ends on the fifth. Winner will supposedly be chosen by Gainax. Prize is five of your shirts. Shockingly, multiple entries allowed. I'm so spamming their e-mail with concepts. Figures that they'd do this when I'm going to be out of town for over a week between the 26th- the 3rd. Win or lose, that means a Gunbuster shirt will be made in something larger than a US L. -
The Aim for the Top! Gunbuster Thread v2.0

Thanks for reminding me of the release date. It figures I would finally find a download of it a mere month before release. It's been online for seven months too. Though I doubt I'll be able to pick up the limited no matter how much I want the figure, so I guess it balances out. -
New Star Trek Movie In 2009..
Mercurial Morpheus replied to bandit29's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Agreed. T'pol and the general depiction of Vulcan's was the ai thing that turned me off from Enterprise. My sister also pointed out how hard it tried to "barrow" from the other series. -
Looking good, though I agree that the face and hair need work. Remember that if you use the early TV hair with her curls, the back is curled up too. It rests right above the top point of the W. Uncurled, it's actually to her waist. You've got a mish-mash at the moment, and it's too short for the time period. As for the uniform, the lineart in Perfect Memory has it how you have it, a W shape. Having designed a costume myself, I can tell you that the straight edge should go to the armpit, and the points are around a 70-80 degree angle, though you can go wider depending on how it comes out, but probably no more than 100. The back is much longer than the front.

I believe it's probably got to do with the layout. Quick search brings up this site. Go figure. http://macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=11983

The Gurren Lagann Thread.
Mercurial Morpheus replied to UN Spacy's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
About time they released the OST. Parts of it have been stuck in my head for some time. It's cool and sad that the 20" Gurren-Lagann comes with a 1/1 Core Drill. Cool because it makes sense and would be a great extra, sad because it makes mine a tiny bit less special. Though i still have the added bonus of mine being given to me by Yamaga himself and for being a not for sale item. -
Great work. You might want the hand to be more in contact with the hair though to better describe it's movement. Otherwise, nice.

Let's stay on target people, and not make blanket statements... it could be argued that they teach it, but kids choose not to absorb it. It's not what this thread is about. Surely, you can't mean that, Skull-1.

I just built a Macross costume, so I've studied them well. To add to the stripe bit, the one stripe (which is blue like the rest of her striping, not green) is indeed the TV look. DYRL changes the coloration and detailing a bit. There are three stripes, and they are red. There is a circular emblem added to the left turtleneck collar. Note that her uniform does change in DYRL (it may have to do with the award ceremony). The stripes change to two in a pattern like this. |=== The cuff also changes to a single stripe where the top stripe would go, bysected by a vertical stripe to the wrist. Strangely enough though, it goes back to the first one at the end. I think it's an error though, as it's back to the one I just described in the final scene. This discussion has causerd me to notice this. How very curious. Personally, I'm more a fan of the TV look myself, as DYRL gets plenty of attention. The only Misa I have is DYRL (though they omitted a stripe). It should be a tad easier too, as you won't have to worry about fitting as many stripes or the circular emblem. Not to mention that the design stays pretty constant, unlike DYRL. Great to see Misa get some love. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out no matter what you chose.

Why would it? Geneon USA has nothing to do with the animation production wing. Though seeing as the manga just passed the anime, I doubt we'll be seeing anymore anyway. Besides, I sort of like where it ended. RIP Geneon/Pioneer. They always were among my favorites. They put out some decent dubs and didn't mess with things as much as others. Why can't Funi or ADV get setbacks like this. They need some humbling (though recently I've been more peeved at Funi than my long time nemesis ADV).
-
Yep. The sub just came out. I watched some of it back when they previewed it online months ago. I liked the look of it. That said, I doubt it'll be remotely as awesome as the previous (which basically took elements from all his mangas). The twists alone made that great, to speak nothing of the rest.

Your Top 5 Non-Macross Anime
Mercurial Morpheus replied to MilSpex's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
It never ceases to amaze me the number of Gunbuster fans here. I generally like everything I've seen, and can't really cut them down to just five. I could probably list five I've hated with certainty, but not favorites. Still, let's try. All timers - the one's I've long considered favorite so I can list them with confidence. 1. Aim for the Top Gunbuster 2. (this would be Macross in other lists) Neon Genesis Evangelion 3. (might actually be two) Mobile Battleship Nadesico 4. Patlabor - The Mobile Police (et. al) 5. UC Gundam (Namely 0079, Zeta, CCA and Turn A [uC if you believe in Turn A Bang]) Other mentions include Utena, Escaflowne, Urusei Yatsura, KGNE, Project A-ko, Lupin III, BGC, El Hazard, Fushigi Yuugi,Cowboy Bebop, Silent Mobius films, Giant Robo, Genshiken, Tenchi, Ghost in the Shell (especially the Oshii movies), Vampire Hunter D, KOR, Key, Dirty Pair, Space Adventure Cobra, Eatman, Blue Seed, Combustable Campus Guardress, and the Leijiverse. Recent favorites include Black Lagoon, Haruhi, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Pani Poni Dash, Gurren-Lagann, and Lucky Star. New anime is hardly crap. Favorite Miyazaki works are Laputa, Nausicaa, and Princess Mononoke. There's a million I haven't mentioned. -

Cool concept. Though a blond Revy is blasphemous in my book. I still need to get one. -

Brutal episode this time, but it was getting too easy. Anyone else notice that they died in the groups mentioned in 23? -
LIVE ACTION ROBOTECH (WB gets the rights)
Mercurial Morpheus replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'd say it was more a case of some dipwad who didn't do his research spreading misinformation because he feels they're ripping off his beloved Transformers (which he also gets facts wrong on as that originated in America). Anyone care to register and correct his grievance errors? Great I had to learn the title of the new Indy film from this idiot. -

It's an awesome assortment of porn stars for those that don't get the joke. No role for Justine Joli? She is an anime fan after all... -

More like the entire content of phantasm in general. Oh, flying bicycle, we mourn for you and the Crash King... Thinking about, how much you want to bet no Kaifun. That's a change I wouldn't mind. Bruce Campbell as Roy. I could actually see that. -
LIVE ACTION ROBOTECH (WB gets the rights)
Mercurial Morpheus replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Actually I was the first to truly state that, but who's counting? I'm sure if they do attempt to do a straight retelling, which they'd have to for the audience to understand the world, many changes would have to be made. Theoretically: VF-1 based off modern fighter, like a Raptor, if based off existing designs at all. Remember the the VF-1 we love just happened to look like a F-14. So they might not bother. Love triangle dumbed down to more common "difficult romance". Culture shock more general or not used at all. Worst case scenerio is the Zentradi being defeated by a gung-ho Hikaru and Roy/Max (they mentioned two pilots) and the world being saved by your typical "american ass-whoopage". If culture shock is used, Minmay will either be typical pop star, or misunderstood alt rocker. My money's on the latter if they play up the action and cater to young adult males as first option to an american audience would be akin to "Britney Spears/Christina Agulera saves the world". Not exactly kin to a shoot'em up mecha fest. Solar System trip is debateable. It might be figured as taking too much screen time. If they use it, and they should, switch to final battle after Macross returns to Earth. Heck, you might have the whole Invid invasion waiting for them just to set up film two. Zentradi probably obliterated entirely for that whole "Earthlings kick butt" feeling as Protoculture is a fuel source, not a link. Now we'll actually see Global, Claudia, et al. die on screen, and the "Megalord" will actually exist this time. Though that's assuming they don't end the Macross segment at the final battle, which they most likely will. Any other theories, Gentleman? Well, Robotech did have the "We'll explain everything that's transpired, transpiring, and going to transpire, right down to character's thoughts that even a monkey should've been able to read without it through omnipresent narration." Soyeah, if you couldn't follow Robotech, you're probably retarded. Having seen both outside of the last six episodes of the Robotech version, I side with ChrisG. No talking down, no pointless exposition, and the characters have a lot more depth. Especially Roy. Rainy Night works so much better with Macross since it explains attributes deleted in Robotech. -

As much as we disagreed on the Gunbuster debacle, I have to admit that you hit the nail on the head in your desciption of how this is getting made. Four more pages to catch up on. I knew this would be the biggest thread of all. -

No worries, a new page appeared while editing my last post. I'm sure the thread wll be huge when I get up. It's a passionate topic. I'm sure the Robotechies are having a field day (too tired to remember my log-in info there). -
LIVE ACTION ROBOTECH (WB gets the rights)
Mercurial Morpheus replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
No, nothing does. I was always of the belief of "They went with animation in the first place of a reason". Basically you're asking if remakes have a point. Usually it depends on what they do with it, and whether you're in the "too similar" or the "not similar enough" camp. Either way though, a remake is still better than a re-edit. What we have hear and with Voltron is a remake of a re-edit in a format neither was ever intended to be in. The irony being even more so when you remember that Robotech was edited together in the first place for runtime reasons which don't apply now. Would a live DYRL work? Especially without seeing the original series that filled in a lot of the original film? Not all remakes are bad. It all depends on where they go with it. DYRL was a good blend of the two positions I pointed out. The unique case here is that this is a remake of a reversioning. So you can think of it as bastardized twice removed. Edit: Sniped again. Good point Hurin. I'm both peeved and glad the wrong versions being made as I don't really like the concept of animation to live, especally Japanese to american, remakes. Talk about messing with someone elses idea. I side with Necron right now. I'm exhusted. Ill post more when I can think straight, so take me with a grain of salt guys. -

You sniped me. Well said. Though depending on how many reports mention Robotechs origins, I see more people watching the edit, not the original. -
LIVE ACTION ROBOTECH (WB gets the rights)
Mercurial Morpheus replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Quoted for truth. It's really sad that the americanized, butchered versions get glorified. At least the report had the decency to mention that it's based off a massive re-edit of someone else's work. Live action Macross is one thing, live action butchered version of Macross, that's something else. Forget about a LA Macross movie if this is made, Mr. March. Whether it sucks or not, most non-fans opinion is that the two are similar enough that it's almost the same to them. Blain23 makes some valid points on it being good or bad. It all depends in how it's handled. I can see this working a lot more than the proposed Eva LA. That one would have to be dumbed down so much that it would become just about robots. Unlike it, since this one has WB backing, and Transformers did well, it probably will be made (if it succeeds it could pave the way ADV has been looking for). It's going to suck that from minute one they won't have the Protoculture concept correct. It'd be great if they used the Macross (aka the correct) version. Yeah, it was important to link the series together, but since they're not having to relay on existing material, perhaps come up with other concepts rather than a magic fuel source mysteriously named "First/Early Civilization". Heck, use them both, and just call the fuel something else. I wouldn't hold your breath on getting Kawamori involved. I'm sure he and the production company of this film (series), couldn't care less about one another. This is an american product, through and through. SK's got the new series to worry about anyway, and has washed his hands of the old. So I say the Legoiss designs have a better chance than Valkyrie designs being in there. Though they'll probably be redesigned from scratch and probably based off Raptors like Starscream. I'd even say the possibility does exist that they never leave earth. They may ditch the SDF-1 altogether and just keep the Valkyries. Though it'd be lame if they did. I wouldn't be surprised if they ditched or even toned down the culture shock bit (could you imagine Minmay as a modern popstar...[or they go for a "hip" rocker]). Like it's been said, somethings just work better in animation. Though with Transformers setting the precedent that people will see giant robot films (even my sister liked it, and she refused to watch mecha), all bets are off. Every studio will probably try to get on the Giant Robot fad (which hopefully might not come).Still, stuff is made in animation for a reason. I can't really place my thoughts on this outside of my initial statement upon reading the title (a disbelieving [and not in a good way]OH...MY...GOD!), and the sick feeling that once again something that shouldn't even exist in the first place in this day and age gets raised to new heights once again. Robotech is a product of the time when no one respected foreign licenses. A shining example of just how messed up mainstream releases of anime in the 80s were. It's an example of what not to do, not something that should be glorified through sequels and remakes because of nostalgia and greed. I've got a bad feeling about this. Some things work better in animation, and should be left that way. I'm not a big fan of animation to live in general.Still, I'd say that as long as it's as decent as Transformers (which was entertaining if somewhat simple in plot), but with a lot more characterization, it might be good. It just won't look anything like Macross. If it's anything like Shadow Chronicles.... Man HG knows how to keep their soul anime meal ticket alive and further prove Hollywood's lack of original ideas these days "What else can we remake? Let's not take risks on something not done before people"... -

Awesome that your releasing this, even if the group name sounds a tad odd. If you're using Lupin Gang's subs, you may want to credit them with their tag [Lupin]. Always nice to see oldschool stuff, especially now that I have the space for it (I saw 1 back when you first released it).
