  1. I'm not sure how to categorize the DYRL set. On the plus side, it is brighter in some areas, which does bring out some detail. Some of the noise was removed too. The color corrections were nice too. The packaging and book sets look nice as well. On the downside, the brightening did wash out some of the color and gray some of the blacks a bit. The edge enhancement was unnecessary, and served little but to enhance the now overly evident grain. Worse, there are now soft spots throughout the film, and an absolutely inexplicable frame error towards the end that's painfully obvious. For all the good, it just looks like it was horribly rushed by the B team. The grain aside (which can be removed or at least stabilized safely, Animeigo readded the grain because it looked to smooth to them, not because of detail loss), There's a lot of errors that just weren't necessary had the time been taken. So, while the set's great, the remaster is disappointing.
  2. Yeah, I can't help but wonder how the Bodolza error made it past QC. It's so obvious too, especially once you know it's there. Shame it would probably be doo much of a pain to correct it with older footage.
  3. That's not how such tools work. I'm guessing that when they ripped it, they messed with the encode, sharpening and brightening it more (the raw is too bright), hence why the raw accentuates the DVD's problems. It also depends on your display. I'm watching on an LCD, and a 32" Loewe CRT DTV. As for the subs, I'm guessing the fps might be different since the new disc is progressive. Maybe I'll post pics of the raw later. My vob download is finished as I wrote this, so I'll see what an untouched source looks like. Looking at it, it is better than the raw, but not by much. The main difference was that it wasn't overbrightened. The windowboxing is still there. The grain is still very evident. The worst though, and only a few have mentioned it, is the disgusting soft spots. It really is unsightly. Thankfully, it doesn't appear too often, but I've never seen anything like it. Here's an example. It should be obvious, but, if not, look at Misa's left hand. snapshot20071229194551.bmp
  4. The only error was one page being misprinted. Other then that, the set's fine. Unless you're refering to the so-so remastering as an error. It's not that bad.
  5. I can't speak for 7, but while the M+ has the same EE problem, it is leaps and bounds better than the R1. The same, sadly, can't be said here, as this is marginally better in some ways.
  6. I figured some of it was the rip, bu I know not all of it. Thanks for the update. I wonder if I can find that vob.
  7. That's what I was thinking. This seems like merely a new telecine transfer with a little correcting. It looks like they added some edge enhancement too, which is really unnecessary and sad to see in this day and age. It's really inconsistent.
  8. Yeah, I got mine shortly there after. I'd have mentioned it sooner, but I've been having a trying time following the recent passing of my Grandmother (mere hours after the editing of the Gunbuster wiki as outlined above). Things are just starting to get back on track. Any one gotten the Wave Noriko yet, assuming it's out? Maybe I'll see it at ALA.
  9. Ah. So I'm not going mad. My download finished, and while I chalk the over brightness to incompetence in the capture (also the reason for incorrect aspect ratio), I really can't say I'm that impressed. It looks to me like they focused on M+ and had a handful of guys on DYRL. Several scenes are really grainy. Though this might not be as noticeable on a conventional set up. Oddly, several shots are really smooth. My guess is that whatever method they were using caused massive loss of detail in the backgrounds, forcing them to only use it in shots already lacking, since the smooth shots are mostly character close-ups, with minimal background. While I generally have no problem with a film like texture, it really shows. I've never remembered the film being this grainy. As for the rest of the remaster, you could've fooled me. The screenshots make it look like all they did was some color correction and fudging with the contrast levels. Not that I remember it needing much to begin with. It's definitely brighter. Maybe too bright (can't tell with the raw). There's also some shots where here appear to be soft spots in the scene. Others seem to ghost a little. It looks better than whatever reject source the recent fansub came from, but it hardly looks like a real remaster. It's clearer, but I think that has more to do with the contrast messing. Another thing I noticed is the amount of dirt left in. Namely the scratches on the cels. Whether this was a conscience decision to 'preserve' to cel animation look or just plain laziness, I don't know. The sound also seemed like they tried remixing the stereo. It just sounded "different", for lack of a better word. I'll have to compare to my NLA copy. Screenshots aside, I'm disappointed. I was even wondering if the rippers ripped the wrong version, and this was an unrestored theatrical. There are some shots that look great, and the interlacing problem the old set had is thankfully gone. That's the best thing I'm seeing here. The brightened has brought some details obscured before, like the space shots and concert, if at the cost of grain. Others, however, have a very ghost like appearance, and I wonder how much of this is actually cleaning and not messing with the intended look when it comes to the tint changes and bright levels. I know some of it might be the encode (a 2.5 gig xvid), but still... This certainly isn't the Gunbuster, M+, or even the Macross TV remasters. If anything, this looks like someone just messing around with AVIsynth like my Gekigangar project.
  10. You know, I never noticed that. Interesting that they corrected it. While I think errors like that add to the flavor, I guess I can't complain.
  11. I was too tired to watch the whole episode, but did watch some of the (horrid) Seiyan fansub. I've really liked what I've seen. Not too fond of so much CG, but it looks like the cash saved on it is going to good use. Hopefully production values won't take a dip in a few episodes.
  12. This is a regular disc, just use whatever cables are best for your TV. Also, do NOT buy a new TV on a whim. It's a great way to buy too much for a so-so set. Sure, it may look great, but it's really something you should research first. Previewing the download I've got going, I'm not too impressed. aybe the RAW is just crap, or VLC is unflattering, but it looks over-brightened, and extremely grainy. The torrents on a slow boat to China, so I won't be able to really look until later. In related news, TOMA is an idiot. I fail tp see the point in releasing a film and patting yourself on the back for digging up a classic when the release in not even close in quality to the years old NLA version. H.264 or not, it looks like it was sourced fro a laserdisc rip, what with the softness and color bleeding.
  13. KAA already released the OAV. I' still hoping they'll put out the movie but who knows. I stated this already in the pre-existing thread you should've posted this in. ;;
  14. Someone's already posted this on the usual channels, waiting for subs. Shame The One Man Army was either impatient or ignorant when he released his h.264 DVD rip on the 10th. Who knows where he "found" the subs. Any thoughts on the remastering? I don't recall it looking too shabby to begin with, so I don't think it'll out do the M+ set. I'll probably see about putting sbs on the raw I'm getting. When I have the means, I'll see about picking up the set.
  15. I figured as much. Shame it's my word against a guy claiming to have checked the R1. He must be confused. I'll re-add my text. I've been tempted to write Dot-anime.us about it. If I do, I'll write from a different e-mail. Edit applied. I wound up reworking it into a new section. AICN has an interesting article on the movie set. I don't read the site, but he makes many valid points on the film that I myself had regarding the editing. http://www.aintitcool.com/node/34936
  16. A month later, and still nothing. They've pretty much forgotten about it. Did anyone else send for their Noriko/Nono Holiday greetings card? If they send it as quickly as my survey gift, I should get it around February. On an old note, can someone confirm for me that the sfx are indeed missing from the altered scene, leaving just music and dialog? Someone on Wikipedia changed my entry about it, claiming they were there. I seem to remember them being absent at the showing (though I was pulled so far out of it to notice), and Keith did mention they were gone. I think he was confused by the presence of dialog. I want to make sure before undoing it. Heck, a Youtube clip would help.
  17. It really depends on the show in question. M+ probably has the detail and color to make a HD transfer worthwhile, whereas Macross Tv might not fair so well. Something massively detailed like the supposed Sleeping Beauty BD should look great. I can understand what you mean though. I've collected a lot of anime on VHS just because DVD offered no benefit at times outside of slightly crisper image, slightly clearer colors, less shelf space (trivial reason)and added craptastic dub. Heck, ADV's early DVDs offered no real benefit^_^
  18. They weren't that bad. I know as I have two of them (got them for five bucks each at a con). I've built one as my G-3. I agree that the posability is lacking (heck, pretty much non-existent [especially in the legs after a hot day in the car]). Especially compared to the Mk-II ver 2.0 I built after it. Propertion-wise, she looks fine to me, especially compared to the arch enemy toy I have. She looks pretty good next to my Mk-II. Even if she is in a far less dynamic pose. All in all, they're definitely way past their prime, and nothing compared to the OYW versions (going by the pics), but hardly a nightmare. Though, the price was right in my case. I still don't know what to do with the second one. Any paint scheme ideas? Thanks for the rundown, Grand Cannon. I'd love to put a OYW in my G-3 scheme.
  19. Not surprising, as they're a ripping group, not a subbing one. I still wish they'd release the movie.
  20. Hmm, I thought I replied here earlier, oh well. I just got back from it. As I fan of the games (though it's been awhile, and I'd never managed to beat any of them), I had my reservations. Olyphant didn't have the look in the trailers, though he did work in the film better than I feared. I till missed 47's calm deeanor and clipped voice. Olyphant's 47 was a little too brash at times. Though he's way better than if Vin Diesel had played the part as planned. Still, simplified/cliched or not, it was still a fun film and stayed reasonable grounded. Like kanedaestes said, it doesn't get too over the top, and sort of feels like the game if you don't pride yourself on heavy stealth. Sure, I'd have liked him to be a bit more subtle at times, but pacing demands something a little faster. About the only thing I didn't get was the girl. She served her eye-candy purpoe well, and did allow some introspection into 47's character, but I culdn't quite get how she got all lovey-dovey in their one sided releationship, nor why she refused to ever listen to him. I did like the little nods to the games as well. As usual, it's not as close to the games as it could've been, but it was still an enjoyable film, and better than most like it. I'd even not mind a sequel. Though maybe I'm biased after having been droned to death by The Boring Compass right before seeing it....
  21. Well, as a big Gundam fan (primarily of UC), I'm still a bit on the fence here. The early episode felt a bit too much like SEED in it's appearance and mecha, but it's staring to explain itself. At least the Gundams are supposed to be more advanced than everything, and not just so because they bear the name, like in SEED. Personally, with episode 10, I'm starting to like this show more. At least it gave a little depth to some of the pilots that needed it. Allelujah's split adds a nice little bit to him. I also found it amusing the someone on /m/ guessed Virtue's little secret. The hair's odd, but it still looks better than Virtue does. I still don't like Tiera. He's now a total dick, effeminate in appearance, and now he's saying "watashi" in the midst of a mental breakdown caused by breaking proceedure to save a trifle thing like his life. He might be the most unstable of them all in the long run. I do like the suggestion that the pilots are purposely chosen for their foibles. It adds some more intrigue that was lacking. All in all, I'm a bit more compelled to see where this is going.
  22. Sure. I'm just saying that a fansub already exists. One can capture the subs with something like subrip. Though it might be even easier to just rip the subs out of the KAA release. Putting it back togeter would be a bit of a pain, as you'd have to reauthor the whole disc. The audio's easy. Just demux it out. Why you'd want the dub though...? I thought it sounded good, but the rewriting ruined it. I saw it dubbed originally, and always wondered why Sharon wanted to kill Isamu if she loved him so much. When I saw it subbed, I understood. The dub removed the dialogue were Myung asks that very question in favor of more pointless bickering, if I remember correctly. Still, to each their own, I suppose. www.doom9.org will tell you everything.
  23. Even I almost got the feeling that she's the last one.
  24. KAA released the OAV set with subs as h.264 files. They look pretty good. I wish they'd put the film version out. As for M7, no dice yet. I'm still trying to figure out how to put subs on a DVD myself. I've been working on an anime video project of late.
  25. Like uminoken, I saw it early. While a good deal is just an extended version of Adama's flashback, some quick gore, and a slight, but awesome extension of the opening attack (the shot of a Battlestar doubling over itself was quite awesome), the added Cain stuff really helped drive home her personality a bit more. The hybred's exposition does raise some questions to ponder.
