  1. Well yeah, it's not like plot armor and over powered mecha bad, but it's not about meaningless deaths, but rather meaningless characters. The bridge crew wasn't so much in that it could at least be viewed as a "no one's safe" mentality. Though it would've been nice to have gotten to know the a bit more (at least it wasn't X Movie pointless ). As I explained before though, in the case of his character played pretty much no part at all in the plot, making any screen time he had essentially wasted. It's like they thought him up merely to have his faction represented and to introduce and also damage things some faceless character could've done. Heck, even Trinity contributed more before being owned, and they were in about 1/5th as much. If the point of it is merely to say, "war is meaningless", than if that's not a case of bad writing/directing, I don't know what is simply because there's no need for it to be this way. Having the characters mourn is great, but wouldn't be better had they made it someone you didn't want to see go either? Granted, I think I'd rather see . It's not the first time 00 had rather pointless characters. Saji and Louise practically served no value to the show outside of having some bystanders to react. Though even Louise served the storyline eventually with her injury. Even Marina has felt a little expendable at times. Heck, Howard and Daryl seem to only exist not to fuel Graham. Even Wang Liu Mei has sort of been reduced from supporting character to mere wildcard for the time being. Hopefully they'll do something with it, otherwise it's just a waste. Rumours state him merely MIA, though how is anyones guess. I'm hoping so as my argument states. Seems they're basically closing this chapter up, and starting anew come S2. I wouldn't be shocked if the Gundams got massive overhauls or completely replaced.
  2. Awesome news. Despite some shakey CGI, IgLoo was a great series, though it's a shame that they're going Feddie side this time. The Zeon perspective really made it interesting. Great to hear that the same crew is back.
  3. Cute. Except that this isn't war, but a TV show. As such, characters have to die in service of the story, especially if they haven't really done anything yet. Why waste precious screentime on someone if they exit with no impact on anything to pull retarded "war is meaningless" statement that can be conveyed with, you know, actual storytelling? Justifying it with that answer reeks of bad directing. You can easily kill a character in a before their time way and still be in service to the plot, like they did . However, characters whose only purpose is essentially to be canon fodder mid series and to give the appearance of CB getting a bloody nose (or the basic concept of "Something's got to blow up") is poor writing. These characters basically die for the other characters to mourn, not the audience, and, unlike Saji's predicament, serves nothing to advance the plot and lacks any impact (hard to mourn someone you don't even know outside of "they killed that cute chick!", not really an important impact, wouldn't you say?). Actual canon fodder can be put to that use as it is, no need to introduce a whole pointless character. I think I heard that argument on 4chan. That's reading way too deeply into things, and putting meaning where there is absolutely none. There's no archetype of character whose purpose is to merely die outside of the CF or Red Shirt character, and they're not supposed to last 20 episodes only to accomplish a mild threat level at the very end (barely damaging a Gundam). AS I heard the director say, basically CB is paying for the last 23 episodes. Only it's doing so in one meaningful death, and a bunch of ones that are rather pointless outside of "Oh My God, they killed -----" (though at least they serve that purpose, probably won't ) I notice that this seems to like to build chara motivation through death or tragedy alone instead of actual development. Agreed. I think I really will call it quits if they kill her off. She's about the only female character left outside of maybe Marina with any development left.I think I heard that argument on 4chan. Yeah, that was one of the best written moments. Even teared me up, which shows how good the writing can be when they do it right seeing a I loathed Louise. She was a horrible character, and I'm glad she's gone for now. As such, I didn't really feel much hatred for Trinity as they hurt characters I didn't really give a damn about. Though it served the plot well. Sad it took that long for Louise and Saji to really become relevant. I agree that he was the best of the Meisters. You could actually relate to him. .
  4. Yeah, they managed to kill off my favorite Meister. That, and some guy on 4chan (not even in /m/) spoiled for me. Looks like they also killed me off. That's the one thing I don't like about this show. Some characters exit after only mildly contributing or not at all. Heck even barely get anything before kicking the bucket.
  5. Five months and counting... In rather interesting news, I've discovered the existence of HDTV 720p rips of both films. I'll be checking the when I free more HDD space. Costume progress is still ziltch. Looks like I probably won't be making Fanime. As long as it's finished this year, I'll be happy I guess. I still need t figure out what material to use for the accents to my Coach jacket. Any thoughts?
  6. Yeah, it is an issue, and Animeigo is known for having a crappy icehouse. Still, it's not that big a deal. At least one of my discs is cracked. It's just the hub though, and doesn't affect playback. As for price, remember that you were paying to compensate licensing, translating, and remastering fees, not authoring fees. The actual boxset costs only about five bucks to produce
  7. It's much easier than you think. Every tone on my phone I've made myself. Just a thought.
  8. Yep, those spoilers really are coming true. It makes me wonder where they're going with Saji. First Louise, now Though I saw that coming the second they got in the car anyway. Wang Liu-Min's intentions make her a new wildcard. I too think Billy's probably going to mod Gharam's Flag. What's also interesting is that it appears even Team Trinity is a pawn in this game. Basically Team A wasn't getting the job done, so Trinity is brought in and, with Phase One complete, might be considered expendable. Heck, their defeat could even be part of Phase Two.
  9. Wow, those aren't bad. Exelion could use a bit more bridge detail at that price, but pretty sweet. Anime starships rarely get the love they deserve.
  10. Well, there is a Japanese dub of it. Other than that, blame the mixers who aways seem ore prioritized toward Ompth than anything else. The VHS mix I have was bad...
  11. Yeah, I just found out about it. Price i get for not browsing the whole board. Where to go indeed.
  12. Hi. I see you've come across what's called an "opinion". They're awfully common on the internet, so you better get used to them. Of particular interest here is that you've come across what's called a, "differing opinion". These are even more common, and I'm told that they're a lot like apefaces - everyone's got 'em, and no one thinks theirs stinks. Get use to them. I see yours is that the dub was great and one should only watch things in one's own language, and that there's something wrong with watching subtitles. Mine is that a dub that replaces sound effects, has so-so casting, remixes mono to 5.1 for the bloody hell of it, and can't even keep pronunciation straight is shoddy, things should be watched in it's original language, but that's not for everyone, dubbing is good for some, and there's nothing wrong with watching anything anyway you damn well please. No skin off my back either way. Mari was the single highlight, and she's already in the original. So I see that we disagree. Let's agree to that and call it a day. To each, their own. You love the dub, more power to you. However, do not say I have to watch it just because English is my mother language. That's just as plain ignorant as me saying you have to watch it subbed because it was meant to be in Japanese (even if, well, it is). Oh, and not to mention it still doesn't change the fact that the ADV disc has inferior Japanese audio, but you obviously don't care since subs are for us reading losers, right. On to real matters, it's interesting to hear about the progressive angle. Progressive discs are sadly rare. THe only downside was the single layer. Anyone know if ADV used dual layer discs?
  13. I disagree there too, but to each their own. Nothing personal. 00 is interesting, and handles its faults better as it progresses. At least they've ditched the pointless characters for now. Now that Saji and Louise have been handled, maybe it's time they salvage Marina. At least, when they pull her back in. It does have rivalries too, it's just going low key on them for now. Heck, the 2nd OP sequence highlights them. Though the main one is a bit more personal than most. Speaking of which, what happened to Patrick anyway? he fell off the face of the earth, it seems.
  14. Anyone else peeved that it's been three months, andstill no winner announcement? Or is it just me? May we also mark the passing of "The Official Aim for the Top! Gunbuster Thread, Macross Nexus Edition". It, like the forum, shall be missed. Even if it wasn't used past the great MW blackout.
  15. Is that what those things were....? ;;;; Things are getting interesting, though I diagree that the writing is that good. It still has a ways to go in chara development and does pull the usual cliches. ("CB's true purpose is.....!!!!!! BOOM")
  16. Well, if your phone supports it, it would be easier to simple cut the Mp3 to taste. ;;
  17. If you're trying to turn the mkv into a DVD, the problems you're having are partly because this is a terrible idea. Taking an efficient AVC file and converting it to sloppy Mpeg2 just isn't worth the headache for the loss in quality it's going to have (compression atop compression atop compression is never a good thing). Panning trouble? Sounds like a frame rate issue alright. The film is about 24 fps. It's possible whatever you're using is trying to put it at the video rate of 30 fps. Thats' what happened for one Gunbuster fansub, an it destroyed the pans. Encode at 24, and it should be fine.
  18. Yeah, this issues been discussed numerous times. Basically, if you're going to watch it subbed, go Animeigo and save a load of cash for a superior product. If you prefer dubs or have to have the extras, than expect to pay more for the ADV and enjoy your shoddy dubbing and noisy sub track for a higher price.
  19. I haven't commented in a while. Having seen 18, I agree that this show has improved considerably. Most of the characters I've warmed up too, and the addition of the Gundam Thrones really helps push things forward. Thankfully, the "Wing remake" rumors were sadly mistaken. The last few episodes, especially, were great. I agree that Graham has become a very noble character. Heck, while I never cared or Louise and Saji, even i was shaken up a bit by what happened to her. Before they felt rather pointless, but thanks to the Thrones, they've been put to great effect. Finally it's moved away from a Gundam slaughter fest. Maybe they can salvage Tiera for me as well. Though that one characters death came in the most generic of times. I was rather shocked by Nena's actions, though it was hinted that she was more of kilter than Johan. Love or or hate her, she's definitely going to be interesting. Oh, and I can easily say I enjoy this way more than SEED. The look early on made it feel similar, but from the superior character and mecha designs, to the much more engaging (if slow to develop early on) plot, it beats SEED hands down in my book. though, to be fair, I've only seen about ten episodes of SEED, and a handful of Destiny. 00's just way more appealing to my tastes in Gundam though. It's not perfect, but it keeps improving. Fortunately, Code Geass will make the season 3 wait bearable.
  20. Ah man. I used to watch Seaquest all the time. Yet another great lost to the ages. R.I.P.
  21. I still haven't finished it. I was watching the raws in the beginning, and spoiled quite a bit from web surfing and such, but still haven't gotten around to it.
  22. You work for Bandai Visual? I never knew. Where've you been any way? Which is probably what they were hoping for in our case. I only bought the R0 (paying 40 bucks more than the average fan).
  23. I read that that was out of consideration for people with slower computers. It's not that big a deal, in my opinion.
  24. He'd probably feel the same as Yamaga, he can understand where the fans are coming from, but can't get upset over one, foreign release. Still, the blow would've been softened had they not tried to hide it (or forget about it). I still think the R0 was made precisely because of it. Why else produce a limited, 4-disc version for an obscure 80's mecha show? Granted it was a clone, and cost only reproduction costs, but somebody either knew they needed something, or there's a major Gunbuster fan peeved that the extras were cut.
  25. I've attended Fanime since 2001. This year will be no different. Hopefully this year I'll be able to buy the 39 dollar 1/48 Yamato Skull One at the swap meet this year (like another will show up). I'm staying at the Saint Claire. It's much better than the Marriot (expect long elevator waits or sneak to the service one.)
