Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone
Mercurial Morpheus replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
See my post of about two days ago. They have version 1.01. The only problem I see is their usual "creative" dubbing habits. Though that's nothing new with Eva. I sort of hope they ditch Gaijin, but I somehow think they won't after the backlash they got over Petrea Burchard. Though their subs are decent if memory serves. -
Ghost in the Shell 2.0

After watching a good portion of it, the new CG isn't all that bad, but it does seem like a pointless change. The original was fine to begin with. Sure the opening is now far starker (and darker overall), and it looks better than the trailer suggests, but there's little reason outside of showing off the control CGI gives. So the CGI isn't bad, but it's not really a great improvement. It's just different. The changed choppers make less sense. To be honest, it's the orange tinting that sticks out more. I understand the whole modernize thing (though honestly, how is an orange display more 21st century than a green one? I've never seen one personally), and it's okay for the displays. What stinks is the retinted footage outside that and the orange look of the new CGI scenes. Particularly when some of the old green seeps through, making it obvious. The Making of Cyborg sequence sticks out like a sore thumb. Worse is the shot of the city before it goes back to Batou running to Motoko at the end. A blue scene cut into by an orange one cutting back to a blue one. It's really jarring design wise. I'm not too familiar with this film in Japanese (saw it dubbed early in my fandom), So i can't say much there. I am a fan of Sakakibara, so I don't mind her as the puppet master. All in all, it's not horrible, but it does seem like a waste of effort. Very much like the Star Wars SEs, though without the really dumb changes. It looks fine for the most part, and I even liked the CGI Motoko in the opening scene mostly. As long as it stays an alternative version, I see no problem with it. -

Funimation just announced the license after letting the poster slip a few days back. Not my first choice, though I suppose it's about par to the other hands Eva's been in. That, and they're nabbing everything. US release on Nov. 10. -
The Aim for the Top! Gunbuster Thread v2.0

Yeah, yeah, a winner is you. Finally got my Bluray set. Everything's in order, so it's a damn good deal (near half the Best Buy price). Anyone know if this is the official Japanese set as well? Given the bonus disc inclusion and the ridiculous use of Japanese menus with exclusive access to some features, it tells me that it very well may be. Sort of killing two birds with one stone thanks to the new region A. Substitute slip for a Japanese one (with the correct 2 hours of bonus features listed instead of 90min [per US accessible]) and you're set. It would also explain the translation sheet for the booklets, though that also saves money on redesigning them for english text and makes way for French too. Still, it rather sucks that there's no subs for the commentary, and one has to navigate a popup menu (which doesn't work in WinDVD BD) in Japanese to get to it. The Dolby is at a higher bitrate than the PCM interestingly enough. I wonder if it would be worth while doing a fan edit of it. Namely fleshing out Kazumi and Jung a bit. It's still a well done job story wise, but an added 15 minutes or so would benefit them. Though i suppose it's pointlerss when one can just watch the OAV anyway. Just a random thought. -

It's common on ebay, other than that, you're out of luck to my knowledge. -

Sort of helps that it wasn't a double dip for me. Second I heard of the Bluray, I was glad I never afforded the DVD. Though I still want that figure... -

You stand corrected. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=110327140311 Still too rich for my blood at the moment, so I settled for the Blu Ray set. -
A NEW Phantom Movie in the pipeline????!!!!!
Mercurial Morpheus replied to taksraven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
If there's one thing I remember liking about the film it was the numerous replica rings I got for free from Media Play. Those were awesome. The movie was okay. -
For the remaster, the GP fansub is the best, no nonsense version to get outside of full DVDs. Avoid the Bakawolf one like the plague, even if it is the easiest to get. BW applied too strong of a smoothing filter to counter the grain, and lots of fine details were lost. A good example is Minmay's bed. The white pattern on it is completely lost in the pink on the BW, and her light is just an orb now. GP applied one too, but at a restrained level. It looks better than the actual DVD (I know having a 1:1 rip of it). For the Perfect edition, the NLA version is great, and was the best fansub available until the GP was released. You can get it on Box Torrents. As for pic comparisons in this thread, the PE wins. Hikuro's remaster pic is the wrong aspect ratio (hopefully a pic issue as it happens to me too), and is too bright. It's smoother though, and background is improved. They sort of did do a contrast boost and tint shift, and little else. To be fair, some scenes are really dark in the PE. Minmay's concert had a lot of detail gained in the remaster. Starfields were also greatly improved. The soft spots do suggest that the PE and HD share the same source print.

To be fair, dubs are good with TV dinners. I found the set at Best Buy, and it solved my extras confusion. BE did include an audio commentary, but no subs for it. What the frigging point of that? It just screams, "this is a port, no new effort was made". I think they only subbed the video extras since that would look especially lazy. I appreciate the inclusion, but I'd like to know what they're saying. Just a thought. -
Actually, six months is the norm. This was five. Though it's not uncommon for blockbusters to be pushed up a month. The DVD extras do sort of suck, but the Blu-ray is pretty good. It really isn't that much different from Begins set. Besides, a film of this profile is destined for rerelease after rerelease. Nothing new here. It's all bonus material anyway. Sure, it's nice to have, but if you like the movie, why put off getting it just because it's lacking the extra where Bale details what he had for breakfast each morning. I'll have to look into that sound problem, rikiryou.

Why you lazy... Well, cant be helped I guess. Though Blu ray info is rather recent. There's only one blu ray edition. You can either get them seperately, or together with a bonus disc. I assume you mean what they did for the films right? Gunbuster is a heavily edited version of the first 4 episodes and the complete last two with a new foley track and new Japanese dub with the original actors. Diebuster is also condensed with a little bit of new footage. As far as I know, yes. Purchase wise at least. If you're talking the OAVs, they missed with Gunbuster episode one, and there's a limited, subless version where this isn't so, and contains more extras. KAA's release also corrects this offense. No. The original foley tracks were lost in a fire, and would require new recordings, like for the film version. That, and it's an obscure enough title that a dub would probably not boost sales enough to warrent the cost. Besides, you have an extraordinary cast in the original, so why would you. That I leave to Keith to answer, since he appears to be the only one to have it. Though I believe he said the Blu ray contains the extra disc that was omitted from the DVD release. I do have a rip with a mysterious audio commentary. Any show you enjoy is worth supporting the creators for. Plus the actual disc is 1080p. Progressive is a big enough deal. I have rips too, but I still prefer having a solid, proffessional copy over a silver disc marked with sharpie. Not to mention that it's considerably less compressed and not sourced from a comparably low bitrated TV feed. Any news, Bandit? -
And in the end, isn't this the real reason to buy it? Because you want the film, right? Right? Extras are nice and all, but I thought they were, you know, extra. ;; The EE peeves me, but I didn't notice on my runthrough the other night (though I wasn't exactly awake). What I really hated was the warping of Casablanca for an anti-piracy warning on the DVD. That was just messed up.

Well, not anymore since I cleared the space and grabbed the torrent. It was more of a "what's on this that I don't already have" type request. Oh, and I liked Diamond Crevasse long before 20. eck, 20 changed nothing for me when it comes to the song. It's probably the only foreign language song where my reaction to it changed after reading the translation. Usually knowing the lyrics does affect me, but now, I find it difficult to listen to at times, in a good way. It's just so damn easy to relate to. So it's my favorite Sheryl ballad.

What I thought was lame was that the two disc really stinks in withholding so much from the Blu ray. I got both copies last night (I have a Bluray PC, but the TVs are SD, so the DVD was for the rest of the family). I'm not much of an extras guy, though I usually buy the two disc since it's never much more and usually worthwhile if I really liked the film, like here. I'm rather amazed that the Blu ray had two specials, six commercials, and a whopping 11 more making of specials than the two dollar less DVD. The BD live stuff I can get, but robbing the main DVD of the a good majority of the extras is just lame, and this coming from someone that buys a film for, GASP, The Film. Looks like the division of mainstream vs niche collectors format has truly begun. The making ofs I've seen so far though are pretty good. It's sort of a given that WB will be milking this film (they already plan a theatre rerelease in January), so I don't see how that's a surprise. Still, this is a pretty decent set as is, and I wouldn't call it a rush. Though the DVD is rather crappy in comparison. Maybe we should have gotten the one disc at Walmart with the coin. Though the IMAX scenes on the DVD are framed differently than the BD. They're 4:3 instead of 16:9. I need to compare images still. The midnight release was fun. I got a Harvey Dent button, a Joker card, and picked up two limited figures of Batman and Joker that went damn quickly at Best Buy. I even got the midnight release poster ad. I also though Scarecrow was pointless, and Two Face could've been in his own film, but actually thought they balanced it nicely. To be honest, my biggest peeve was that Eckhart's truly moving performance that rectified the dreck that was Jones' horribly wrong version was overshadowed by the hype over Ledger (who was awesome in his own right, but not the only good thing in the film). I truly believed in Harvey Dent, and it gave purpose to Rachel.

Interesting news on the age of the error. It definitely means they're working with two prints. Do you know if the error only appears in Perfect Edition copies? It's possibly it was introduced through the adding of An Angel's Paints. Still, good to know it wasn't a recent mistake as previously though. Still, they corrected other errors in the film, why not this? I know as I compared older versions when the remaster I discovered that the horrrendous soft spots in the video were not unique to it as well. The remastering just made them more obvious. Grain is not a bad thing, but it is at an unacceptable level in the new master, and does suggest it wasn't made from the source master. It can be toned down, as evidenced by a fansub that did a beautiful job of it. I've seen numerous copies too. My first was a HK rip that removed the Minmay shower scene (rather seamlessly too). It had bland colors and I though that was the look. It wasn't until I saw a proper R2 rip that I saw how vibrint it was supposed to be. My later copy of Bionoids was a used VHS so badly worn, I can't really help you there.

Yes. About time a rip of the movie version showed up. It's my favorite edition. Now I just need HDD space and a dual layer disc. Thanks.

I somehow missed this coming out until I ran across the LonE torrent. Not surprising since I've sort of moved on from Ranka and Sheryl for the time being. Good to hear it worth grabbing. Maybe it will revive my interest. I wonder if the full Sheryl Aimo is better than the lame snippet in the series. I'd rather have the rest of the score to be honest. The songs are great and all, but I really want the theme played when stealing the Macross Quarter. I can't believe that one's not on anything. Any english tracklist out there for the japanese impaired?

There's quite a few threads on the subject. My general though was that it was decent, but could've been a lot better, and it had grain up the ying yang.

Ah, you misinterpret me slightly. I'm sure it is legit since they go so far as to make the claim (you'd have to be retarded not to realise how much more trouble you'd get in if you sold boots AND lied about them). But they do sell recasts on their kits. Which is fairly common. Howe else do you think they can sell a 600 dollar conversion kit for a mere 75 bucks? So my point is that they do sell knockoffs, but I'm sure the prepainted stuff is fine. I've always wondered how long a wait it would be to order the storyboard set on HLJ. It's listed out of stock, and I know Gainax still makes them (they brought them to Fanime one year, and i was broke by the time I learned of the fact.) Dejr8bud, that's exactly the seller I mentioned earlier. Let us know, please. -

Nope, not hard at all, provided you can track them down. I've never seen it in person. My collection is as follows: Kotobukiya Noriko BOME Noriko Second Kaiyodo Gunbuster (complete with loose leg joint developing mere minutes out of package) SOC Gunbuster A complete set of the 1st One Coin series minus Sizzle Black/Silver A two of the Gunbuster 1.5 One Coin (Dix-inuf and the secret topless Nono doing the super lightning kick [i at least want all the Gunbuster ones]) Buster machine 7 mini figure Nono maid mini figure one pack of Cardass Masters Gunbuster Film book 1 R4 Gunbuster Movie DVD (though disc replaced with R2 rip) R0 DVD signed by Yamaga USR set signed by Yamaga and Maria Kawamura Noriko Sketch by Fumoi Iida. You are aware that Hobby Fan specializes in garage kit recasts, right? Though thanks for the info, I'll think it over. I agree that I wish they made all the characters the same as Noriko in a BOME version or any other large scale version. I would really love to have a complete set of the 1st Gunbuster One Coin set. Of the 1st series I have Noriko's and Amano's RX trainer, an Amano, Sizzler Black and White. Aren't those really about the only ones outside of kits? I have a three small Nonos as detailed as above. I'm just not that big of a Diebuster fan. Besides, anymore, and she'd outnumber Noriko. Can't let that happen.
