Robotech Masterpiece: Jack Archer
Mercurial Morpheus replied to RavenHawk's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I have a Max one, and agree with what's said here. If you can get it cheap (I paid $30), it might be worth it. The YF-1R was okay in appearence, but as someone who actually plays the game, it was among the worse Veritechs to use. Too fast for it's own good, and papermache for armor. -
California Macross Launch Celebration?

I got one. I'm seeing my SF friend in a few hours and Save my be opening up the list, so I'll ask his again if he wants one. We're damn lucky he found a bunch of people that just bought it for the lotto card. Wow, the Robo fans are going all out... Good for them, but it hurts my pride a tiny bit I guess. Though they did start selling the poster today, so at least the 7th is still somewhat in effect. Okay, so the event is pretty much the 22nd, unless anyone has any objections, or good reasons to bump it. I will not to be able to attend if people want it moved to the following weekend due to a family trip. The list so far of those interested appears to by Myself, and I'll have at least one friend UN Spacey Ginrai Dax415 Valkyrie23 (also ordered a poster) miriya Not to bad so far. All that's left is venue, and so forth. -
Macross Launching Ceremonies
Mercurial Morpheus replied to Noriko Takaya's topic in Movies and TV Series
It is indeed this Saturday. They're having an event on 2/22 to play up Frontier (Nyan/Nyan Nyan). Though apparently it was originally 7/07/09, or sometime in October. I'm likely headed to SF and plan on watching the first four episode "as they happen". Anyone else plan on watching the show over the next two years on the dates of the episodes? Just a reminder, to those of you unable to make it to South Alteria Island by tomorrow, as of February 11th, you have exactly one year to make it to one of the Grand Cannons. Forget 2012, Armageddon comes Feb. 11th, 2010 FROM SPACE!!! -

I'm more for the actual date, as the Japanese date is merely a tie-in to the Nyan-Nyan jingle, though I admit that we've all dawdled a bit too long to really make it possible and tying into that date is at least a consolation prize. Judging from the people actually replying though, I'd say the date's pretty much set to the 22nd. Unless you want to delay it to the originally planned July or October date that Nue ditched. What we need moreso is a better set plan of attack and an attendance list. Also I would hope if we do the combined shipping plan for the posters that they'll actually be there in time. Though to be sure, anyone interested state your preferences. I'm pretty much up to anything, and we should at least keep it in February. The Seventh is the official date according to the Compendium, but it is a little too close for comfort. The 22nd is the official celebrate date in Japan, tying in more with Frontier. So at least it's still somewhat official. -

Thanks for the info. I'm kind of torn on the poster. I like the overall design, but rather dislike the presence of Sheryl and Ranka on something celebrating the original series. It sort of just screams that this as more a promo for Frontier than it is for SDFM. It should've been Misa and either Milia or Claudia. Though maybe they were trying for some commemoration between old and new, though if the case, the pandering between Sheryl and Ranka fans leaves poor Minmay outnumbered (and with the wrong date too). Though it is commemorative and would pretty much give a bargaining chip to make sure I have a ride to the 22nd meetup. So I may have to get one. The shipping plan is a good idea. When's the cutoff day going to be? I'll have to talk to my ride tonight. Now that it's pretty much settled for Sunday, he'll probably not want to go Saturday, as we also plan to attend AOD on the 14th. Three weekends in SF is some sort of taboo for him and he has school early morning Saturdays any way. Interestingly, trading Wondercon for a family trip to Disneyland makes the 22nd plausible as it now avoids a three weekend in a row bit. Though one never knows, as we still have to meetup with a local friend anyway. If I do make it up, I'll post here if anyone wants a potential minimeet at J-town or something. -

I suppose we do need more time to set things up, though I really hate missing the actual date when it actually was plausible at one point. That and the seventh worked a bit better for me, but I can understand that we did lag a bit too much to make it happen. As long as we actually do get something off the ground, then it should be justified (at least the 22nd has the Japan tie-in[even if it is just a lame wordplay], so it's not an entirely random choice). What be these posters you speak of? -
I have to say that I'm liking what I've seen so far. The Superad impressed me more than ROTF's did. Glad to see Baroness keeping her glasses as the only pictures I'd seen so far only showed her with shades. Though, as someone that likes hair too, especially redheads, I'll have to look closer at Scarlett to see where Dave's coming from. It probably won't be great, but it definitely looks a lot better than most of the adaptations coming our way.

This show has really developed quite nicely, though I am deeply saddened that they had to kill off one of my favorite characters. I sort of knew he wasn't going to make it out alive, and at least his death serves a narrative purpose. Rest in Peace, oh great Bear of virtue. I don't entirely hate Andrei for it, but he did let his emotions get the better of him. So he's still better than that little twerp Billy. Looks like Soma's being reawakened. Poor Alleluia. I want a model of that.

There still interest in this? The date's this Saturday. UN Spacy's plan sounds feasible. Though there are numerous parks in both SF and SJ that could accommodate us. aybe even Japan Town. At the very least, we should have some sort of group showing of the four in day episodes. -
As a fan of pinup noseart, that's the clincher for me. Nice.

Yeah, I think we need a definite date and such. Japan's doing 2/22, the actual date is 2/07/. I'm more for 2/07 since that works for me better, and if we're going to do it, why not on the actual date. -
It's part of this site they've set up. http://www.thenewfrontiersman.net/ Good to hear it's being released as planned.

California Macross Launch Celebration?
Mercurial Morpheus replied to Ginrai's topic in Conventions and Local Gatherings
I'd be up for it possibly. I'm in Modesto. SF or my hometown of SJ shouldn't be a problem. Note that the 2/22/09 date is merely what they're celebrating in Japan. It's seems more a Macross F promo though as I understand it, since the date appears chosen to tie in with it (Their event is titled, "Macross: The Super Dimension Space Launching Ceremony ~It's Really 2009 Already…It's 2/22 (Nyan Nyan Nyan), Deculture!~." ) The Compendium has the actual exact date as 2/07/09, which is a Saturday. If so, it might make sense to have it on the canon day, and not one chosen simply because of a pun in the date. Besides, 2/22/ is the week before Wondercon. Shame we missed the first flight of the VF-1A. Anyone else planning on watching the series "as it happens" this year? -
Indeed it is 4:3, as it should be. It's a shame though that the only group releasing it only put the opening in 1080p though. Once again I'm forced to not utilize my 1200p screen to the fullest...

12 was a great episode. All in all, i liked Frontier, but it was not without it's problems. Namely impact and staying power. A lot of the drama, particularly surrounding Sheryl, could've been better. Of course, that's because she could've been better developed as well. Even Ranka had her miscues, though faired more consistently. The shipping war didn't help either. Though I must say I loved how it ended the triangle. They stayed true to Alto there. Frontier strikes as the type of show whose true merit is revealed on repeat showings. It's a odd one for me that a lot of episode were awesome to watch, interesting to discuss, yet overall almost forgettable. It's sort of an event, more than a show. So it's a weird little show for me, and now that it's over, it's over. It's like I both loved and reviled the thing. Though oddly enough, as much as I'm merely okay with the show, and unsure how I feel about the characters, I already have cosplay from it... On a side note, great to see another Nadesico fan...

This and VFTF1 nailed it. I think DYRL is a fabulous film, and highly entertaining. It practically cemented my love for the original Macross. That said though, it's obviously a film for fans. Especially character-wise So many details that make Macross so rich are lost or obscured in DYRL. Like the whole Riber bit. An unexplained flashback while Misa is lectured on romance. A nonfan may not get it, but a fan is invoked of memories from "Bye Bye Mars". So I voted TV. DYRL is pretty, but I'm a story/character kind of guy. You just can't fit 12 hours worth of info into a two hour film. That, and I also loved the epilogue episodes. The idea that, even though the Earth's been all but destroyed, everyone's happy not being the final ending really stood out. Though I still love DYRL, and watch it when I need a fix of the original cast. It just stands much better as a love letter to fans rather than on it's own.

It looks pretty damn good actually. About as good as any animated film can.

Cosmos Pink Shock - 1986 OVA (Subtitled)
Mercurial Morpheus replied to Area88's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I watched about half of it so far. It's essentially a parody of modern (circa 1980) anime. -
Thought this merited mention. Yack, Deculture... http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2009-...awa-passes-away

The Boxtorrent version is still heavily seeded as well. That where I found it, even before this thread was made. -

Hybrid set 2 is out today apparently. Any opinion on if the extras are worth buying the new set or should one just get the sub set (since i have no plans of ever watching it dubbed anyway)?
