  1. All I want is a more balanced series like Frontier, 7, or the original. Delta is too much a Walkure commercial and not enough an actual story for me to get excited about it. I kind of want to see them go back and animate something like VF-X2 since that was so important to the story going forward.
  2. Doesn't the high level of reflected light from the snow have something to do with that too? Snowblindness was a real problem for them and that's caused by reflected UV from snow. It wouldn't be the weirdest romance we've seen in fantasy. I don't completely disagree but I feel like the context matters more than the race. Like, if it's a community theater production they have to make do with whoever auditions. But in Hollywood they have a talent pool that's deep enough that doing it arbitrarily or because they're too lazy to cast a person who matches the author's intentions for the character it's wrong no matter what way it's going like casting ScarJo for Ghost in the Shell. If they're doing a reimagining of a story that changes the setting to a different location or time period it's more acceptable because the context of the story is different. Like if Bollywood decided to do a West Side Story reimagining set in Kashmir about an Indian man and Pakistani woman or something, that would be more OK becuase the context is completely different even if the broad strokes are the same. The Wiz is another good example since that one was set in more modern times with Dorothy being a girl from Harlem. It's way too early to tell if they're going to make major changes to The Little Mermaid. I'm a little worried we're looking at musical racial stereotyping in good old fashioned Disney tradition though.
  3. It doesn't make a ton of sense biologically. Not that mermaids make sense biologically anyway. Melanin is natural insulation against UVB radiation which is why peoples from equatorial latitudes have more of it. Mermaids live on the ocean floor. In clear ocean water only 1% of light makes it down to 200 meters. There's no reason for mermaids to have a high level of melanin because the water is already protecting them from UVB radiation. Unless they live in shallow coastal waters less than 20m deep they should be like vampire levels of pale. Ariel's family live in a freaking underwater castle so they're probably deeper than that. As a black person I'm not sure I'm ok with this kind of casting decision. Like I get wanting minorities to have more representation in Hollywood but randomly making characters other ethnicities for no reason except representation feels more like a step back towards blaxploitation but with a better budget. At the time this story was written the Danish government was still kind of struggling with the idea that black people were people. They didn't even completely abolish slavery until 11 years after the story was first published. Don't even get me started on the problems that would cause if they decide to make the prince black too.
  4. After 5 episodes I'm dropping Domestic Girlfriend. I'm all for drama in romance but this show doesn't have drama it has relentless misery. Natsuo is miserable because he's crushing on his teacher Hina who is in a relationship. Hina is miserable because she's the other woman to an unfaithful husband. Rui is miserable because Hina is miserable and she's socially awkward. Their parents are miserable because they don't understand why their kids are miserable. And now there's a suicidal girl too. This is daily soaps levels of messed up but without the camp it's just depressing. I have higher hopes for Magical Sempai. It seems like a fun little comedy after the first episode. Nobunaga Teacher's Young Bride and To The Abandoned Sacred Beasts sound like fun too. I put Servant x Service back into the lunchtime lineup as a pick me up after that depressing mess Domestic Girlfriend.
  5. From the look of the photos of location shooting this show is a steaming pile of Do Not Want. If they wanted to do a story about a Starfleet admiral gone rogue why not Janeway? She's known for going rogue. Sometimes more than once in an episode.
  6. Going to see this later today. I'm not too optimistic about enjoying it though since the eyes bug the crap out of me and the Rotten Tomatoes reviewer scores paint a pretty dismal picture. Overall it's got a 56 right now and among top critics a 33.
  7. After the last one, I'm not going to bother going to the theater. I'll wait until it ends up on streaming. Kylo Ren isn't as badly written as Lucas's young Anakin but he's pretty close.
  8. Neither is Kawamori. He's just the "series concept" guy when he's not drawing storyboards and designing robots.
  9. Well yeah. That's setting the bar awfully low though isn't it? The season two premiere is the 2nd episode of Disco to actually feel like Star Trek. If they had started like I might actually not hate Burnham.
  10. I'm planning to take a good look at Grimms Notes and The Quintessential Quintuplets over the weekend. Maybe Meiji Tokyo Renka if I can find the time. Shield Hero got off to a rough start but episode 2 was pretty good. Naofumi got his morality pet so he's not sulking 24/7 at least.
  11. I feel a little cheated. All that buildup at the end of season one and the Enterprise and TOS aesthetic are gone in the space of one episode in season two. Now they're taking pointers from that awful Lost in Space movie.
  12. I can't believe this book is still going. The art style changes so much because of all the tracing it feels like the comic book version of Movie 43.
  13. That's a big risk they're taking. They're a good indie outfit so I hope it goes well for them. I kinda wonder if they're going to run into trouble since this is new territory. Nobody ever tried to make a full transforming toy of the Spartas before.
  14. They're back into that flashback arc now that the previous edition never finished.
  15. For my money it doesn't necessarily have to be mature storytelling as long as it's effective storytelling. If you can't get invested in the characters what's the point. Like for Delta it's hard to give a damn about Walkure or most of the other characters because we barely know anything about them.
