Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
Vifam7 replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
You'd also have to realize the sheer difference between the 2 ships as well. The SDF-1 was mega-sized ship that allowed for an entire city to be built inside. The White Base is a cramped warship which likely has little if any amenties for comfort. Being cooped up in a warship for days on end with little or nothing to do (plus rationed food) would indeed make the average civilian grumpy and restless.- 3772 replies

The Macross Quarter. DX Chogokin
Vifam7 replied to 505thAirborne's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Just to note - it was never said that it'll be exactly 20cm. The wording was very vague in the poster ad which only stated it'll be "big" and that the height will be "more than 20cm". And that the reasons for this size will be forth coming. It was a rather cryptic line and almost anything can be inferred from it. It's best not to take what was said too literally right now. -
IIRC the Kitty Hawk was one of the last conventional powered carrier to remain in service due to the fact that it was (and reportedly still in) excellent condition. That and Japan forever resisting having a nuclear powered ship ported in Yokosuka.

You realize that statement makes absolutely no sense when they put up the money to fund a whole new anime series (Frontier) so they could sell merchandise? Also, in regards to lack of Macross 7 toys, I believe it's due to the fact that the Valks in that series are unpopular in Japan. Whenever I read the Japanese boards, a lone figure will sometimes bring up a wish for the Fire Valkyrie, only to be quickly put down with comments sounding like : "THE FIRE VALK IS TEH SUCK! IT'S GOT A MOUTH!". Even though Mac7 had a number of sequels, it's popularity (in Japan) seems to have been pushed more by the songs than by cool looking mechs. That said, I'd personally love to see a toy of the VF-11MAXL made with proportions like the SoC GX-09R Minerva X. -
What Current Anime Series Are You Watching? v2.0
Vifam7 replied to Duke Togo's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
A quick and easy way to understand the background of the original series: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Year_War All of this is not fully explained in the anime. These details were filled in later in books, games, and whatnot. The anime mainly focuses on the growth of the lead character Amuro Ray. Not sure if you're watching the movies or the TV series but - the original Gundam TV series is not considered Tomino's best directorial work. If you want to watch Tomino Gundam, it's probably best to watch the 0079 movies then quickly move on to Zeta Gundam. The best non-Gundam Tomino work I've seen is Aura Battler Dunbine. I haven't had the chance to watch Ideon or L-Gaim fully to appreciate it as much as Dunbine. -

We don't know know if Bandai will or will not improve their products. They did go back and redo the SoC Voltes V chogokin IIRC. If fans want Yamato to get a exclusive license to Macross property, Yamato has to find a way to put up the funds and create a new anime series for Big West. -

Has anyone tried to see if a MG Gundam hand could be used as a alternative? Those MG hands are very nicely articulated and since it's slightly smaller at 1/100 scale, it may fit into the shield cover? -
I wish the navy would stop naming carriers after ex-presidents.

Have you used the provided attachment device? The device is needed to attach the gunpod in fighter mode. -
I have a request for a pic. Can someone give us a photo that has following three displayed nose-to-nose in fan-like arrangement (in fighter mode)? Yamato's 1/60 v2.0 VF-1 Bandai's DX VF-25 Toynami's or CM's Legioss (with or without Tlead attached) Much appreciated.

That and many folks just have trouble putting together a model kit. They either don't have time and/or skills to put one together. Perhaps Bandai's entry into Valkyrie model kits will spur more folks to try their hand at kit building. The fact that Bandai kits are pre-colored and snap-fit is an excellent motivation for newbies. Those 2 characteristics turned the whole gunpla franchise around. Perhaps it will do the same for Macross? I can only hope that Bandai has the rights and is aiming to release more than just the Frontier Valks.
-
I find it a little odd that folks will build model kits just for the fun of building it and not having any kind of attachment to what it represents when completed. Not that it's wrong to do so. I just always thought folks build model kits because - they like the anime (for mecha kits), enjoy the history (for real word stuff), or simply like the aesthetics.

This sounds like a dumb question but - what's the correct way to sand away a seam line or sprue mark? I'm talking about the hand movement. ;; Back and forth? Circular motion? One direction? While I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to go back & forth, I've read/seen tutorials using the circular motion and then others that say to go in one direction. And still others that say go in one direction at first then a different direction next. Someone please enlighten me.

Personally I suspect the fast pack combo release to happen sometime this summer or fall (ie. during or after the release of the Frontier movie this summer). As for full armor Ozma, that might be a long wait. There has yet to be any news of Bandai working it. -
I don't have the time, knowledge, or equipment to do fansubbing. Though if anyone wants to fansub this series, I'd willing to helpout on the translation. It is an excellent series btw. Both story-wise and animation wise. It's noted for Yasuhiko Yoshikazu getting a chance to make a robot anime that he wanted to make (and not what a toy sponsor wanted). This was his baby. Hence he was creator, writer, director, character designer, mech designer, and chief animation director for the series.

Yes. In fact a remastered 2-box set was released back in late 2007. You can still buy them from AmazonJapan. Macross Seven Set 1 Macross Seven Set 2 The set was barebones. Nothing in terms of on-disc extras. The box came with a thin booklet that had a bunch of lineart and a commentary by director Yasuo Hasegawa and character design clean up man Hiroyuki Kitazume. That's about it. It was a pretty inexpensive set compared to other Japanese anime DVD sets.

I don't want to pull out the LDs from the closet so here are some of my DVDs. All are legit Japanese or US releases. Macross and Mospeada related: Box sets: Other non-Macross robot anime:

Simply put, the problem with Southern Cross was that the robots (and the show itself) had no flair, detail, or distinguishing characteristics that made it stand out. All of the popular anime robots have that "something" that makes them "cool" and memorable (whether it be the story, action scenes, attention to detail, gimmicks, etc.).

Japanese wiki article. I know, not exactly the best source. I'll look into it a bit more. Another interesting fact which I know to be true - Southern Cross was originally conceived as a comedy series with super deformed-like lolita characters. Character designer was to be Uchiyama Aki - a mangaka (I think female) noted for creating hentai manga with loli girls. Some of his/her? artwork can be seen in the This Is Animation: Southern Cross mook/artbook. Wanna see lolita-fied Southern Cross charas? I have the artbook somewhere. Oh yeah, the model kit for Lt. Lana has a gimmick in which the armor can be taken off to... expose her boobies. The kit even came with a tagline: "Body comes with lolicon". Lol. WTF?

Just to get a bit back on topic, the main sponsor for Southern Cross was supposed to be Bandai. Bandai was supposedly going to make the toys of the Hovertank/Spartas. But they backed out of the sponsorship early on. The sponsors that remained on were Arii, Imai, and LS whom were all working together. All 3 are ofcourse plastic model kit makers. For some strange reason they released 9 different model kits of the characters in armor but not one of good guy robot mechs. Not even the simple Logan. That probably didn't help. And with the huge success of Macross DYRL that same year, I assume Arii and Imai simply focused their sales on Macross products.

You just gotta understand how this place works. MW isn't exactly a place where logic and objectivity is the norm. On a separate note, does anyone have a scan of the booklet/instructions sheet? I don't recall seeing it here before. -
