    BTW Nausicaa will be in theaters next Monday and Tuesday as part of Studio Ghibli Fest 2019. https://www.fathomevents.com/events/nausicaa-of-the-valley-of-the-wind-studio-ghibli-fest-2019 I'm going to a showing on Tuesday. I've never seen any Ghibli film at a theater so this is going to be a treat.

    While the powered exoskeleton or powered armor concept is nothing new and has been around in real life and fiction long before 80's anime, the designs as we anime fans think of today probably starts with illustrations seen in the 1977 Japanese translated printing by Hayakawa Bunko of Heinlein's Starship Troopers. The illustrations done by Katou Naoyuki and the mech design by Miyatake Kazutaka (both who were with Studio Nue). This design is considered by some anime fans to be the starting point of Gundam and all other anime-style powered suits and "real robot" piloted mech.

    Pleasantly surpised that there are two baseball themed anime this season with Cinderella Nine and Mix. Of the two, Cinderella Nine has more of my attention as Mix is based on Adachi Mitsuru's manga series which I have been reading for the past 6 years.

    In general, all models from the higher end diecast aircraft manufacturers are limited. Typically around 1000 to 2000 pieces. Usually higher amounts for the first few releases of a given mold.

    99% correct! The JASDF Phantom is a F-4EJkai of 8 SQN which also wore the blue-on-blue camo. Can't fault ya there as you couldn't see the tail marking and it's also hard to see the ASM-2 missile hanging from the pylon. The Mirage is indeed a Mirage 2000.

    Only the Sanka Mk.B is fully diecast. From a company called Organic (I've never heard of them). The ads said it was 1/72 scale but in hand, the size of the model fits in better with 1/100 scale. The Crusher Joe Fighter-1 and Fighter-2 are from Wave. They come fully painted and built. All plastic. The Super Sylph Yukikaze and Mave Yukikaze are from Alter. They come fully painted and built. All plastic. These are truly amazing pieces that look like they were made by expert kit builders. The real life JASDF jets are half-diecast half plastic magazine pack-in models from DeAgostini Japan. The Mirage 2000 and MiG-29 are the Amercom brand half-diecast half-plastic models (which I believe are also magazine pack-in models). The prop fighters are pre-painted kits from Doyusha that you have to put together with a bit of glue.

    In preparation for the Super Robot Wars T game, I watched Expelled from Paradise. It touches on familiar sci-fi tropes and topics but it was overall enjoyable. Shame that it was only a 1hr40min movie. It could've easily been an OAV or TV series, but then it might've not had the brilliant CG animation quality. I had a feeling that Itano Ichiro was on the staff as there was a good amount of Itano circus going on.

    It was an OK movie. I went into the movie with low expectation so maybe that helped. Brie Larson as Captain Marvel did just fine. The biggest problem I had with the movie was the rather non-existent character development of Carol Danvers/Capt. Marvel. At the end of the movie, I still didn't really know what kind of person she was and what her motivations are. Rather than random flashbacks and exposition dialog, I would've liked to have seen much more of the character's career/experience in the USAF and her comraderie with Dr. Lawson and her friend Maria. But maybe that's the military aviation fanboy in me talking.

    In terms of Gundam manga, I'd recommend Mobile Suit Gundam Aggressor. The story centers around 2 Zeon soldiers who defect to the Federation during the One Year War and fight alonside other Zeon defectors in the "Aggressor Squadron" (formed as an adversary squadron to train Federation soldiers but in the story they are thrown into the frontlines). Ofcourse there are subplots like the reasons why the 2 defected, the Federation's machinations behind the experimental GM handed to the Aggressor Squadron, etc.) It leans a bit more as a shonen action series and it has a rather old school feel (which I like). If you like your good guys good and the bad guys bad, you might enjoy this. It also has a good deal of mecha action that (IMHO) is well done. Unfortunately, it's not available in officially translated form. But you might find fan-translations online (I don't know for sure, I haven't checked).

    The USAF has already thought up such a scenario where command & control support is lost. Red Flag 19-1 and the F-35 "After refueling at night over a southern-Nevada dust bowl called Texas Lake, scores of U.S. and coalition warplanes crossed into contested air space on a mission to suppress state-of-the-art enemy air defenses. The formation was soon bombarded with warning signals as radars of advanced surface-to-air (SAM) missile batteries with the reach of Russia’s S-300 and S-400 air defense systems switched on. Electronic jammers struck as fighter pilots tried to communicate with an E-8 Joint STARS command-and-control aircraft; rear-area command cells had satellite linkages disrupted by cyberattacks. Starbursts of surface-to-air missile launchesflashed on the ground below, and cockpit alarms warned that the formation was being painted with multiple radars from enemy aircraft with paint schemes and capabilities designed to replicate the likes of the advanced Sukhoi Su-30 Flanker fighters in the arsenals of both Russia and China. Because this was the final mission in a three-week Red Flag exercise, however, the “Blue Force” pilots did not panic when confronted with a coordinated attack by Red Force Aggressor Squadrons operating in all domains – air, ground, space and cyberspace. Working in tandem, fifth generation F-22 Raptors and F-35 Lightning aircraft escorting the Blue Force formation exploited their stealth and speed to close quickly with the most immediate threats. The F-35s used their unprecedented sensor suites to gather, fuse data and distribute a common picture of the threat array to other aircraft. Fourth generation F-15s, F-16s, F-18s and British Eurofighters used that targeting data to launch beyond-visual range missiles and bomb strikes on SAM sites as strike aircraft proceeded successfully to other enemy targets. The simulated warfare felt surprisingly real in the cockpits of warplanes traveling at supersonic speeds."

    IMHO, the biggest obstacle to overcome on a regular glue & paint model is the feeling of the need to get it perfect and amazing looking. If you can lower your expectations and accept that the result is not going to be anywhere near the stuff made by experienced modelers, you can jump straight into Hasegawa kits.

    How about the Heinkel He162 Volksjaeger? Reich Air Ministry asked for designs in Sept. 1944, approval was given the next month, and first flight took place in Dec of that year. Went into service in Feb. 1945. Granted, the engine was the same BMW 003 used in the Me262 and Heinkel had already been doing preliminary work before the Air Ministry's request. Still, it went from paper to squadron service in a span of about 6 months.

    Watamote can indeed be tough to get through, but depending on your viewpoint Tomoko can be a character you can sympathize with. I was able to handle Tomoko's missteps early on but admittedly I was getting tired of it around Volume 6/7 of the manga. However, I stuck with it and it rewarded me when things turned the corner on Volume 8. Right now, it's one of my top 3 manga that I look forward to getting the next volume. It's now at Volume 14, Tomoko's in her 3rd year of high school, and the story seems to be heading towards the end. The anime isn't really worth watching as it barely covers the first few volumes of the manga. On a separate note, I've started watching My Hero Academia. (Yes, I'm a bit late to this series :)) I'm halfway into Season 2 of the anime (as well as several volumes of the manga) and I'm enjoying it. Typical shounen martial arts/superpower fight series but it's enjoyable. I've pretty much outgrown Shonen Jump anime/manga stuff like DragonBall, Naruto, and the sort but this one is done quite well. At least, thus far. Not sure how much this series can keep my attention though.
