  1. But it states that it gives "real-time imagery" (not just data) via infrared cameras. https://www.f35.com/about/capabilities/missionsystems Unless I'm reading wrong, it does suggest that the pilot can literally "see through the floor". Found this: http://www.rockwellcollins.com/sitecore/content/Data/News/2014_Cal_Year/GS/FY14GSNR44-F35.aspx
  2. Actually, he's sort of correct. https://www.f35.com/about/capabilities/helmet
  3. From my experience of building the VF-27 kit, the Bandai Frontier kits are not really a great kit for getting back into model building. The Bandai kits are not difficult to build. It's just that they have a lot of pieces and building up parts consume a ton of time. Even more time if you're going to do any painting as it requires reading the instructions and thinking ahead. Otherwise, you could find yourself building a part only to find out you need to break it down in order to paint (which isn't hard as these kits are snap-fit but time consuming & annoying nonetheless). However, you don't have to paint these kits if you don't want to. They come pre-colored so like Master Grade Gundam kits you could opt to simply snap it together, put on the decals, spray clear flat, call it a day, and still end up with a decent build. Oh, and forget about the transformation gimmick. The transformation gimmick has never worked out well (IMHO) in any kit past or present, Macross or non-Macross. Just build and lock into one mode. Personally I'd go with a more simpler kit to get back into model building. Like the 1/100 scale Wave kits.
  4. But it does improve capability. If I'm reading David correctly, it makes all regular manuevers better. It just doesn't make all new ones - which I'm guessing isn't really needed or required to defeat any potential enemy. Also, I'm guessing it's just a limitation they put in so that pilots don't wear out or abuse the limited number of airframes they have.
  5. Mainly, it's because advances in wing design, fly-by-wire, and high thrust engines made the need for VG wings unnecessary.
  6. Obviously, you missed the whole point of the anime. Maybe it's because you're too young to understand, but it's a parody on otakus and otaku lifestyle. Particularly that of the 1980's generation (just look at how many Macross references there were).
  7. Love that website. However, the idea that the ASF-14 would've been cheaper than the Super Hornet is highly optimistic. Also, variable-geometry wings are pretty much now obsolete.
  8. And the F-15E Strike Eagle.
  9. To operate F-14s, the RN would've needed a supercarrier. Something they never had. Perhaps if they still had the Ark Royal, the Gannet AEW, and F-4Ks, things might've been different during the Falklands War? Hard to say.
  10. One of the arguments for having a gun is not for air-to-air dogfights but rather for air-to-ground strafing runs. I remember reading somewhere that British troops in Afghanistan were unhappy with the fact that their Harrier GR9s didn't carry a gun to offer strafing fire support. Sometimes all the troops want is a strafing run a few hundred feet in front of their positions and not a smart bomb. The problem with the F-35 is its inherent complexity of trying to be 3 different aircraft for 3 different services, plus the stealth aspect and incorporating the latest gadgetry. Is it any wonder that it's super expensive and the development time is extraordinarily long? It's why some critics like Pierre Sprey argue for cheaper single mission aircraft.
  11. Bandai waterslides are terrible. Very poor adhesion and very brittle. However, using decal setting solution, decal softener, and spraying a coat of clear goes a long way in making waterslide decals more hardy.
  12. You mean, like in Transformers? The CG and acting wasn't that bad in the Yamato live-action. The CG was pretty good and the only real bad acting came from the Black Tiger squadron members. The main leads were okay.
  13. The Yamato live action movie was a hit in Japan. IIRC it was the top movie of the year in Japan in 2010. Folks loved it in Japan. Western viewers didn't think too highly of it though. It would suggest that a Hollywood remake will likely have to have changes to fit Western tastes and ideals. Starblazers did not do better in America than Yamato in Japan. Uchuu Senkan Yamato is an icon in Japan. If you had to list the top 5 most important and influential anime in history, Yamato would be on that list.
  14. With whites and yellows, sometimes what I do is lightly rough up the surface with sandpaper.
  15. My understanding of this scene is that Miria is saying : Beautiful? Who, me? (as if this was the first time someone ever complimented on her looks)
  16. A tip on taking photos outside - Try not to take pics against the sun. Generally it's best to get the sun behind you so that it brings everything into view.
  17. He's saying it's an item dating back to 1985 and he found it in Akihabara.
  18. Actually, "fast packs" is the generic term for any add-on boosters, armor/weapon packs. The correct Macross terminology is "Strike Pack" for the one with the beam cannons. "Super Pack" for the ones without. You can use the term "Parts" instead of Pack if you wish.
  19. Lately, just about every song and BGM from Girls und Panzer. https://www.youtube.com/user/daveguycoedcae/videos I'm also addicted to the figures for this series. Buying all the figmas and nendoroids.
  20. [shortened for quoting purposes] Good points. And let's say the Kickstarter funding actually does succeed. Then what? They say a 24 min. pilot will be made and it'll be used to pitch to the networks. What makes anyone believe that a network will pick it up and fund a series? A 20+ year old property that ... now has very little name recognition...has had lackluster success since the end of the original series... that the new series is trying to tie to....by a company that hasn't produced much or has had much success in recent memory? They might have more success if it wasn't Robotech.
  21. Most of us probably can't watch those videos anyways as it's location blocked.
  22. Interesting. Reminds me of this pic I found on the web. (I can't remember where)
  23. Is that the MG or HGUC F91? He might want to pull out the shoulder wings. It'll make the F91 a bit more interesting. I think F91 looks best when white and clean. I put very little effort in my MG F91 and it turned out ok.
  24. My first exposure to DYRL was summer 1984. That year I was in Okinawa. I remember watching the commercial for DYRL on TV and wanting to go see it (because Macross was hot stuff back then and all the boys were talking about it). Unfortunately, I didn't get to see it at the theaters as end of July was when I was heading back home to the US. I finally got to watch DYRL 5 years later via a VHS tape recording of DYRL that aired on TV. I hadn't seen Robotech or Macross TV before so I went into DYRL without any prior knowledge (other than it had transforming fighter jets). It didn't matter, the story, the animation, the character designs, the choreography, the songs... it all totally blew me away. Ever since then, DYRL is the standard to which I judge all other anime. Very few anime match what DYRL accomplishes (IMHO).
