Robotech Academy - You want a new Robotech series...?
Mr March replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Favorite moment? I can't really think of anything in this thread I would want to label as a "favorite" anything. It was a poorly conceived and terribly executed kickstarter that once again simply abused the Robotech fanbase. It was a disgraceful act on behalf of Harmony Gold. Though it had the ancillary benefit of publically displaying how obsolete and out-of-touch Harmony Gold is with the modern business of media production and it's own consumers. Even Wired magazine caught on to it. If I had to pick a "Moment Most Disgraceful" from this entire thread, it would be when Tommy Yune posted that co-opt of "Shut up and take my money". It was an example of a tragically self-unaware arrogance coming from the last guy on the planet that should be saying something like that, especially now that the kickstarter has utterly failed in a spectacular fashion. Very nice Tober- 2025 replies

Macross Compendium says 9 volumes were released in 1992, with a re-release in 1996. That seems unlikely to be the first release. There are other betamax releases for other stuff dating before that. http://macross.anime.net/production/animation_live_action/first/index.html

Robotech Academy - You want a new Robotech series...?
Mr March replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Given how petty HG has run this kickstarter (spy tier and all) I wouldn't put it past them to have cancelled the kickstarter out of spite just to sabotage the failure celebrations. I truly believe at this point the company-fan relationship is one of abuse and has been for many years. The reason HG keeps getting away with this kind of consumer mistreatment is exactly because they keep coming back. At least, they ONCE did so. This kickstarter appears to have been a wake up call that put that abusive relationship into the spotlight at last and many fans have simply left or refuse to aid HG anymore. Bravo to them. Unfortunately, I did not. But I'm up to speed now. The franchise ccould still offer some entertainment, just not under the current regime. ANYONE can do a better job than Harmony Gold. Or at least, if anyone tried, they'd put in a legitimate effort that HG seems incapable of doing. I agree any acquisition of the Robotech IP is unlikely, but at least it would be the one endeavour worth pursuing with this company. Everything else is a waste. I don't care and at this point, nothing short of a stellar entertainment product would make me. I wanted to go at least a little melodramatic to help underscore the moment. Thought an 80's pop culture quote fit the 80's subject matter- 2025 replies

Saw it this past weekend. One of Marvels best. Perhaps one of the best big summer box office movies. It seems so strange to think of this film as a super hero movie, because it didn't feel like much of one at all. It felt more like a Star Wars film. Not the crappy Star Wars prequels, but the Star Wars sequel we should have had. And not just because it's space opera, I mean everything. The production design, the props, the costumes, the mechanical design; it's all really interesting, creative and distinct. That lived-in feeling permeates the entire film and makes it so easy to just leap into this crazy world because it feels so relateable and alive. The cast was amazing, with great performances across the board. The dialogue was hilarious. There were so many jokes I think i laughed over a few once or twice. Easily the kind of film I can watch over and over again. A final note as a mecha fan; I am in love with that ship. For me that hero spacecraft - called The Milano - now joins the ranks of the Serenity from "Firefly" and the Millenium Falcon from "Star Wars" as another beloved space chariot filled with character and style. I must own a model of that ship. MUST!- 344 replies

Robotech Academy - You want a new Robotech series...?
Mr March replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Damn, I'm away for a few days and the kickstarter is already over! I see that without the kickstarter discussions - and now that the whole kickstarter has been cancelled - the cannibalism has begun. As has the scapegoating. Laying responsibility for the failure of the kickstarter on everyone EXCEPT those people actually responsible for the kickstarter. "Of Robotech fans I can only say this; of all the fandoms I have encountered in my travels, your's is the most...tortured." I don't care if folks believe me or not, but you Robotech fans don't deserve the abuse from Harmony Gold. You don't deserve the incompetence of Tommy Yune. You don't deserve one failed project after another. Use your passion for Robotech to do whatever you can to secure the rights for Robotech from Harmony Gold and into the hands of real talent and professionalism. Or do what other self-respecting Robotech fans have done; leave Robotech and Harmony Gold behind. Enjoy the original and keep your fandom alive through fan works/sites, but refuse to fund Harmony Gold any further. Don't get involved in their projects. Don't participate on their websites. Boycott them completely. Hell, continue to hate Macross fans (we're a-holes anyway, so I don't blame you). Just take some good advice; get out of this relationship.- 2025 replies

How do you even find the page for the VF-25S Ozma on HobbyLink Japan? Whenever stuff is not in stock, it doesn't even show in a search. For those folks offering to sell multiples they have ordered to other MW members, I really appreciate the offers, but it would be great if you could offer some credentials when doing so. Like, mention if you're on the striaght shooters list, let folks know you have a positive feedback ebay account, long time members that can vouch for you, etc. Macross World suffers scammers like every other website. We just had several in the last few months. And the reason members here are having trouble ordering these Bandai figures is because scammers/resellers are trolling all the merchandise sellers right now. So please keep that in mind when you're offering these deals to help out others. There a lot of folks here with single or double digit post counts that I've personally never seen. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not eager to hand over $100+ to someone I don't know so I can take them at their word that will send me a VF-25S. Appreciated.

Robotech Academy - You want a new Robotech series...?
Mr March replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I do wonder about Duke's question a while back, in which he asked what other franchise is like this (or perhaps it was fan base). From a non-fan outsider like myself, the Robotech franchise seems to come up like a bad infection with these festering failed projects again and again. It's so bizarre. If Harmony Gold wasn't a larger company and didn't have a revenue stream that supports Robotech then this absurdity couldn't be perpetuated. But I guess this status quo of non-entertainment will continue as it has for...what? 20+ years now? Dear gawd... That's a surprising level of maturity I didn't expect. But I am upset that this honesty and pragmatism from Harmony Gold may undermine the hard work we've all done worldwide for the last 50 years to create this perception of a massive Macross conspiracy theory against Robotech. The last thing I want to see is people acting intelligently and taking responsibility for the products they buy. I invested a lot of money in moustache wax and I want to twirl mine as I laugh maniacally for many years yet to come- 2025 replies

I'll give it a try but this is one helluva broken system. I'm REALLY glad I'm not a regular collector of this stuff.
-
Insanity. We've got 11 pages of posts in under 12 hours about this! You weren't kidding Scyla. So THIS is how Macross toys are sold now? What a damned shame. At this point in the "toy buying system" there is no way this is not a setup. A process like this screams corruption/collusion on the part of the manufacturers and resellers. And no one would care to look into it legally, because it's toys, which no one takes seriously. I'm ashamed of humanity Well, I guess that means I won't be buying one of these.

I would kill to have the kind of influence and power the more deluded Robotech fans think we have. But since we don't and never will, I'll have to be content as the scapegoat for the mentally unstable. By his noodly appendage! Our fan art section has produced superior work. Shameful.- 2025 replies

Not in the face! Fear not, I just didn't want to waste the opportunity to pester a friend. I'll make it up to you M2 fans in the next update of my website; I got a small but very awesome addition to that section

Dear gawd. Well, thank you technoblue and chyll2. I had no idea this is what toy collecting had come to. The resellers sure have become the scourge of highend collectibles. I'm still in the market for a VF-25 Renewal, maybe I'll try for this pre-order, but it doesn't sound promising.

Can someone translate for a toy collecting newb exactly what is happening in this thread right now?

Robotech Academy - You want a new Robotech series...?
Mr March replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'm really sorry to hear that Gerli. I've been reading all about it. Anyway, can't get into the politics on this board, but I hope for the best for your nation. I don't have the kind of nostalgia for Robotech that you have JBO, but I certainly understand it. That's why I don't think people should be so hard on Robotech fans. In spite of all the bad blood and the misplaced animosity toward Macross fans (we all acted out our fair share of arrogant haughtiness too, which doesn't make friends), they are just fans that fell in love with an edit of Macross. They just want to enjoy their beloved anime the way we all do our own Macross. That's not a crime. When I got into Macross now 15 years ago, I'd never been interested in any Robotech after that...but I could have been. All it would have taken was the opportunity to buy Macross AND one fun, entertaining Robotech production. If I had my Macross, there wouldn't have been any worry, guilt or anger preventing me from enjoying Robotech. As long as the quality was good enough. The real reason Harmony Gold legally denied Macross is because they couldn't profit from it. It was selfish, petty greed mixed with a little bit of American jingoistic entitlement and a LOT of obsolete, old school business arrogance. The reasons they shared publically for their actions (fear of a diluted market for the Robotech brand by allowing a product too similar) were always bullshit. Even at it's height, both Robotech and Macross were niche markets internationally. The consumer base for niche markets don't need to be told or sold about products; they inform themselves and actively seek out the products they want. If niche consumers wanted to be easily informed and catered to buy, they'd be mainstream consumers. I agree a significant portion of Macross fans want more SDF Macross story, but that's not me. But you're right, it is a different situation for Robotech fans. There is no Robotech DYRL or Robotech 2012. No Robotech Plus or Robotech 7. No Robotech Zero or Robotech Frontier. And Shadow Chronicles didn't have half the impact on Robotech fans as the worst Macross sequel. For them, "The Macross Saga" is all they have. And the tragic part; Kawamori has forever closed the book on SDF Macross, but Robotech could have ran with it. We Macross fans could have enjoyed a continuation of the SDF Macross story through a Robotech sequel that we'll never have from Kawamori...for those of us that want it. Seems like a missed opportunity to win over Robotech fans AND Macross fans. That would have been a good kickstarter project. What could have been...- 2025 replies

Robotech Academy - You want a new Robotech series...?
Mr March replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
That's an old piece of news, but it's no rumor. I once ordered my merchandise through BigBadToyStore and when they were no longer carrying Macross toys, I wrote to them about it. They told me explicity that they were threatened with legal action by a "an American company" for selling Macross merchandise. It was clear who they were talking about, but being careful not to mention names or spread rumors. The only currency I'd ever give Harmony Gold are the ashes from a burning dollar bill used to set their company offices alight.- 2025 replies

Robotech Academy - You want a new Robotech series...?
Mr March replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Don't be too hard on Robotech fans for the latter. The Macross and Robotech fan bases had a lot of bad blood between them for years. It's expected human behaviour that Robotech fans would mentally marginalize or attempt to publically deny the enduring popularity and success of Macross. The antagonism between Macross/Rbotech fandoms indicted "the franchise of Macross" in the eyes of many Robotech fans. If I were in their place - and I thank the gods I am not - I might act the same way. You know what's sad in all this; it didn't have to be this way. Harmony Gold's abuse of my beloved Macross franchise, their litigious bullying of toy vendors, denying Macross fans what we wanted (the very thing Macek claimed he was doing with Macross in the first place)...if none of that existed, I might have been open to Robotech. Hell, if the bad blood never was and a legitimately great Robotech production came to be, I can't deny there's a chance I would have been into it. To me it just would have been a reinterpretation, a remake, a reimagining; easily categorized especially if it was really fun and entertaining. But that could never happen because of the narrow-minded idiots at Harmony Gold. Harmony Gold's behaviour effectively lost me as a customer, a customer that could have been filling their pockets for 20+ years if they just let us have Macross and produced quality content themselves. How hard is that? (rhetorical question)- 2025 replies

Guardians of the Galaxy, on DVD/Blu-Ray December 9, 2014
Mr March replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The marketing for Guardians of the Galaxy sells the film as a Marvel movie for sure, but it clearly looks more like Star Wars than it does a super hero film. Also remember that action films have been so over-the-top for decades, it's difficult to tell if there's really any line between an "action hero" and a "super hero." Both are doing the impossible and it's a fine line arguing between which is more implausible than the other. As such, I think Guardians has a much broader appeal as a sci-fi film than as a super hero film. But really, super hero films have become the new sci-fi blockbuster of our age- 344 replies

The VF-25 Messiah was built for animation with perfect transformation in the earliest stages of it's concept design because the actual CG models absolutely demanded uniform proportions to work properly. None of the other Macross productions (except Macross Zero) had such restrictions, so the animators for SDF Macross through to Macross 7 could play with the designs fast and loose. The only thing companies like Arcadia and Yamato can do is create a BEST FIT toy that attempts to recreate the drawn, animated valkyries that were never originally designed to have a perfect proportional and transformable toy counterpart. As long as companies could build transformable toys that looked "kinda right", that was enough for the toy technology of the time and the limited budget the toy consumers could afford. Today, we're all grown up men with full time careers and apparently plenty of money to waste on expensive nostalgia products of our beloved youth. So obviously companies can build much better stuff You've indeed done good by me. Thank you so much Mommar. Buying a VF-25 is inevitable at this point, lol. I have also heard mention on other forums that the VF-25 Renewals are being restocked, so it looks like perfect timing for me to grab one. I'm not so worried about the finish or style of the Bandai products; reading what you all have to say and watching youtube videos it's clear that the VF-25 renewal line will be just as good a purchase for me as these Arcadia figures. Plus, it kinda feels right to have one Valkyrie from each major generation of the Macross valkyries. I'm going to get one.
