Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
Mr March replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Wow, I'm getting some serious Five Star Stories vibes from that thin/exposed torso, the open-back legs and those very pronounced heels on the feet. The overall feel of that "Glaze" has a style of an FFS mortar headd channeled through a mobile suit factory- 3717 replies

I just re-watched that episode the other day. A really good episode, especially for humanizing Picard. It was also my first exposure to Famke Jansen, who just nailed it. You could tell she was going to be a big star and she certainly did become just that. And damn, did she age VERY well.

Well, it certainly looks very impressive. Great sets, good costumes, pretty good effects. It is good to see that post-technology landscape I remember from the series. But it's all visuals. There's no sense of story or character to be found. Not even sure what tone they are going for, except just the vague "EPIC" that virtually every piece of marketing tries to sell to the consumer for everything nowadays I read through all the books as a young person and remember enjoying them, but I've not revisited the series since. I'm not sure how they would stand up today. Since it's not something I've gone back to and not something that's become a staple of my fandom in the decades since, my guess is they don't hold up well. That, and I don't trust my younger self's lack of taste or a critical eye

I've actually had the Mr Robot series recommended to me by several folks. I've not watched as yet, but I gotta check out what everyone is so excited about it.

Suicide Squad, in theaters Aug. 5, 2016
Mr March replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Stylistically, this Suicide Squad trailer is going for something a little different and less conventional. And I agree that at least there appears to be some effort made to stop following in Marvel's shadow and at least attempt to get out in front. But I'm not quite feeling the film from this trailer. Much of the style seems to be undercut by a lot of mostly conventional dialog and action sequences done in the same old "summer action film template" manner that we ALWAYS see from these kinds of films. Ever since Mad Max: Fury Road set the bar, I'm really getting bored with the way action cinematography won't break from the norm. Maybe it's just timing and I need to give this film more of a chance. Maybe I'll warm to it in time.- 242 replies

I actually enjoyed the first trailer, even though I know I don't want to see the film. But this new trailer is so over the top, it's almost becoming a parody for this type of movie. I'll stick with the first trailer

I actually remember that thread. As I recall, Bateman's insights were VERY illuminating. Even in the limited context I have for the HG/Robotech IP, his insight rang true on much of the more public and well-known history of that troubled property.

azrael I pretty much got the gist of the sarcasm without the tags, but your post created discussion that could inform other thread readers. I think I'm getting enough from your excellent summaries (btw, thank you for these) that I'll avoid the videos themselves. I know almost nothing about the Robotech franchise anyway and I've kinda worked hard to do so. That way very little Robotech franchise knowledge can accidentally find it's way into the Macross Mecha Manual (though I don't always succeed) jenius A quintessential case in point. An excellent example of this in action, albiet with a far more naive IP owner than is typical davidwhangchoi I know nothing of the HG/Robotech personalities, so I'll have to take your word for it. But if this Tom Yune guy is anything like many shallow IP owners, this will be their L.A. gun story for the rest of their lives, to anyone who will listen

Yeah, like I said it can feel a little A-10-like. But the fuselage is kinda flattened and wide in the screenshot, whereas the A-10 is narrow and tall. Maybe it is meant to be, but not drawn quite as accurate. It is a rather quick scene and it's meant to be just background fodder.

Whenever IP owners sell their property to be adapted by a major Hollywood film, they almost always have no input. IP owners love to talk up their involvement with Hollywood because it's a thrill, an ego boost, they look important to others, etc. And the more small time the IP owner, the more they talk. HG fits that bill perfectly. Reality is whenever an IP owner signs any agreement with the major Hollywood studios, the IP owner doesn't have crap to say about any of it. They get a token producer co-credit and that's it. Hollywood holds all the cards and makes all the rules; your IP "film rights" are temporarily sold to the Hollywood studio and they have TOTAL control over the film adaptation IP. They can do whatever they want with the IP, from a film that resembles nothing of the IP to making nothing with the IP at all. If any of the HG/Robotech panel flat out says they had any influence on the Live Action adaptation (or "implies" they had some hand in it) they are lying like a politician. There are a thousand and one horror stories about Hollywood adaptations and the IP owners always tell the same sob story: once the IP film rights were sold, they had ZERO input. Only rare exceptions exist.

Now that sounds more likely and believable. If that wording is accurate, then all it means is North Americans don't like non-English spoken media. That's not Macross-specific, that's universal.

Solo: A Star Wars Story, in theaters May 25, 2018
Mr March replied to Dobber's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Disney's gotta make back that 4 billion somehow. I have to admit, I am dying to see the internet 5 years from now. Will it be mostly pleasant surprise or a whole new era of raped childhoods? It makes sense that they would do a solo Han (chortle) film, being one of the most popular of the original characters. I suppose the big question is how far off the map are they going with these films. As always, I fear for the paralyzing effect that nostalgia seems to have on modern directors making these kinds of franchise films. If they are retreading old ground, I'd at least hope they open up the universe and avoid the "hyperlinked" problems of the prequels that made the Star Wars universe feel lifeless and small. -
I don't know anything about their product line, but most of the major 1990s and 2000s anime titles have blu-rays at this point, even many of the North American releases. Macross, the Ghibli films, Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Patlabor, etc. Who the hell makes an announcement for any new product re-release in 2015 that ISN'T at least high definition? I know 4K is too much to ask of most anime distributors, but at this stage of the game announcing a damned DVD set is just absurd and embarrassing.

Interesting. Not sure if it'll be much to look at, given the primitive nature of the robots. No matter who wins, we lose, kinda thing, lol! But it's at least worth giving it a chance. I still love the Mechwarrior II startup sequence, The one that tells you the planet, temp and all that; "Satellite: Karika, Ambient Temperature: 45.44 degrees, Local Time is 13:35:28 GST, All Systems Nominal"

LOL, best to try identifying it in just a little higher resolution I don't think it's identified. But I can see some weird stuff going on, like that it apparently has a set of canards, elevated above the main wing line. Take a look at the top pair of canards, particularly the wingroot where they are attached to the fuselage: it seems to indicate the top pair of canards are placed forward of the main wings. And these canards also feature "winglets" on the outer tip of each. Very strange. The engines kinda look A-10 Thunderbolt-ish.

Hannibal was quite good for what it was; a broadcast TV show. But it was still a broadcast show from a broadcast network, even as much as it tried to break the mold. I think I've just been spoiled by now over a decade of specialty cable shows from AMC, FX, Showtime, HBO, etc. I find it difficult now to go back and try watching broadcast shows with all their inherent limitations due to broadcast standards. Still, it's sad to see a show like Hannibal go. To some extent, it was fighting the good fight.

Wow, great picture.

I haven't personally read any trivia about that, but the VF-1A head laser cannon is on a elevated mount, capable of raising upward or lowering downward. I just assumed the cannon "raises" (it would be "lowering" in fighter configuration, because the head unit is upsidedown), the landing gear deploy and then the cannon "lowers" (raises) back into position. It's not like clearance is needed on the ground, so while in flight the cannon would have plenty of room to drop straight downward while the gear are deployed and then the cannon can be pulled back up prior to landing. An of course, we've seen in both the TV series and the DYRL film that the VF-1 head units can drop and swivel laterally while in fighter mode. So the cannon could be cleared from the landing gear without ever using the elevated mount for the cannon itself.

Game of Thrones TV talkback thread. BOOK READERS STAY OUT.
Mr March replied to peter's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I think my favorite episodes are the ones that have great dramatic collisions, which happen with all sorts of characters and not necessarily my favorite characters. Sometimes ones you least expect. I think one of my favorite moments of the whole series - and it wasn't even a big moment - was when Lancel tries to intimidate Littel Finger and Petyr just has none of it. I think the sequence has so much gravitas because of the weight of who Baelish is and what he can do, yet almost no one has any clue. Or one of my favorite sequences is still from season one between Jaimie and Eddard in the throne room, talking about the death of Ned's father, brother and Jaimie's killing of the Mad King Aerys. Again, it was the implications of what they talked about, that was totally lost on a narrow-minded man like Eddard. The failure of honorable men, the incredibly impossible choice Jaimie had to make and how remarkable that he made the right choice, the pathetic, misguided shame put upon him for that choice...just so good. I also adore good dialog, so often times I'll be so impressed with an episode because it has a piece of dialog that is just so memorable. Sometimes one of the shows best pieces of dialog or most memorable quotes will appear in episodes that might not be so great overall. On a different point, the 4th season blu-ray set has an amazing "making of" feature for the battle at the wall. They go through all the aspects of the sequence, from special effects, to stunts, to sword fighting training to that amazing 360 degree shot in the middle of the battle at Castle Black. It's an incredible feature and I highly recommend watching it. So much fun to see how they achieved the giants and mammoths.- 316 replies

That's quite hardcore to rank all the episodes of the entire series thus far. Not sure I'd do the same. I mean, one of the great things about Game of Thrones as a series is so many of the episodes have great moments, amazing visuals, and memorable dialog. Sometimes these things happen in weaker episodes, but the moments or individual scenes might be some of the series best. Or based on seasons too, like how this 5th season is being considered by many to be one of the weaker seasons, yet had an episode which is one of the best of the entire series to date. I think that's far more worth praising than going through the minutiae of each and ever episode relative to another, but that's just me.- 316 replies

RedWolf I don't know about trivia, but I think I have some line art of the stuff in one of my magazines featuring Macross II art. Was there anything specific you were looking for? calubin_175 Have we had any official numbers or history on the production of the YF-19/VF-19 Excalibur? I think it's a big assumption to suggest the VF-19 was not successful or wasn't built in as large number as other craft because strictly speaking, no one knows. Remember, the reason the VF-171 Nightmare Plus was featured in Macross Frontier as the main NUNS main variable fighter was a "production" reason on the part of Shoji Kawamori, not a "story" or "in-universe" reason. As I said in another thread about this very topic, the VF-19 could have been a dead end production run or it could have been widely adopted or somewhere in between. Simple fact is we don't know. There's numerous colony fleets, worlds and outposts that could be operating entire fleets of the VF-19 Excalibur all off screen. In fact, it's very likely some are, given what is written in the offical Macross fiction about many of the variable fighter production lines. I'd also be careful assuming the VF-171 Nightmare Plus is easier to control for the average pilot than the VF-19 Excalibur. Official trivia for both says there were designed specifically for ease of control and there's no direct comparison of which I'm aware.
