JBO I actually found Macross more scientifically sound than a lot of other science fiction (at the time) especially with regards to space, so the rings of Saturn don't bother me. Macross was one of the first space stories to make proper use of reaction thrust maneuvering in a vacuum or even just how long it would take at sub-light to traverse a single solar system. Hell, even a realistic/futuristic cockpit is something Macross has had down for decades while even something like Battlestar Galatica re-imagined (2004) couldn't get it even remotely accurate. I think that for it's time, Macross had much more to offer that was accurate and informative than the reverse. Seto I can't recall waste heat/management being mentioned once in any animated Macross production; if it was, it's barely registered. The trivia occasionally mentions something like the atmosphere limitation of the YF-19/21, the fuselage limitation on the VF-27 Lucifer, or other such limitation. A handful at best, and it's never a major part of the IP as a whole; my interpretation of heat trivia in Macross is fair.

Heat is such a major technical hurdle to overcome that most science fiction properties ignore the issue altogther, never even acknowledging how it's dealt with in relation to all this high-energy technology. I've seen heat management systems mentioned in technical specifications and mechanical diagrams to make all the science fiction of a given property "feel real" (like in the Star Trek and Star Wars technical publications), but no more than a token passage. As far as I know, Battletech/Mechwarrior is the only well-known and popular sci-fi franchise to make the problem of waste heat one of the major aspects of their world building, and that was only because originally they wanted heat to act as a gameplay balancer for their tabletop system. In all my work with the Macross trivia, I've barely seen mention of heat management technology and almost no mention of anything to do with heat. Only exceptions are when heat serves as some kind of limitation on a technology the writers don't want to get out of hand. The Master File books may mention more, but given how much of the MF books are populated by uninsightful fluff, I doubt it there's any inspired creativity with regards to heat management included within their pages. But I do hope I'm wrong.

I'm not sure about the VF-0 Phoenix nosecone radar, but I know of two such pictures for the VF-1 Valkyrie. The first is an official cutaway diagram of the VF-1 Valkyrie from This Is Animation Special Macross Plus (1995) and the second is an unofficial cutaway diagram of the VF-1 Valkyrie from Variable Fighter Master File VF-1 Valkyrie Vol. 1 (2009).

The VF-4 has no jointed shoulders, it's all torso chasis, with the arms simply dropping below it. And I think by now everyone has the idea.- 2715 replies

Duymon "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." But I would agree that I'd want to see the next valkyries in Delta without the prominent back wings, if for no other reason than to see something different in Macross. I really liked the hip-mounted wings in the Macross Plus mecha and think they'd work well simple relocated from hip-to-shoulder. Renato At the risk of repeating myself, not seeing a lot of shoulder-mounted wings there- 2715 replies

Wow. I admit, my experience with modern comics is reading stuff like Saga, The Wicked + The Divine, The Walking Dead and East of West, so I guess I didn't realize the old Dark Horse Aliens vs. Predator tipped off a craze that has now become a comic book institution and genre unto itself!

I don't know any of the details, but this feels like something that should be fan fiction art on DeviantArt "for fun", not actually published as a legitimate thing as if it were a good idea.

Macross Δ (Delta) - announcement thread
Mr March replied to renegadeleader1's topic in Movies and TV Series
Yeah, that's always been a challenging idea. Might be harder to implement and I'm having difficultly fully imagining it, but I like the concept. It's another way to change up the status quo and offer a new style even if the transformation system isn't all that different. I too think a YF-21 style transformation (with the single engine sitting on the back of the torso in Battroid mode) could work.- 2715 replies

Yes, something kinda like the RGM-96X Jesta. Probably not like the Gundam Airmaster; doesn't seem to have any shoulder interaction with the wing at all, mostly mechanisms from the main chasis, from what I've seen.- 2715 replies

I would think the articulated wing mount I mentioned would permit deployable wings in GERWALK. Or they might remain mounted to the fuselage in GERWALK, transferring to the arms in Battroid.- 2715 replies

Macross Δ (Delta) - announcement thread
Mr March replied to renegadeleader1's topic in Movies and TV Series
Okay, so I built a quick and dirty mock up of the idea I had using the VF-1, but got a bad audience reaction so I figured I'd use a valkyrie no one has any pre-existing bias towards. So here's CursedChimera's AVFX-02A Wyvern showing my shoulder mounted wing concept. I envisioned a shoulder wing mount acting as an additional joint so the wing could move laterally as well as also allowing swivel articulation back and forth, leaving the arms almost entirely unfettered by the wing when needed.- 2715 replies

No, no, something where the wings are mounted upon the outer face of the shoulder itself. The best analogy is like the Gundam Physalis (http://www.macross2.net/m3/moremecha/rx-78gp02a-physalis.htm) that Kawamori created, but instead of rocket boosters upon the shoulders there would be wings mounted.- 2715 replies

It's not that Valkyries don't have the capability to fire missiles in Battroid, it's that it's never been done in this way before. It's the "implementation" that's different, interesting and REALLY fun. I mean, think about the look of it. Maybe it's hard to visualize it. But imagine the wings flat along the Battroid biceps, mounted at the half-way mark at the shoulder with three racks of missiles upon the outer side (the largest cluster at shoulder level, a smaller cluster above and one below). The missiles would be mounted facing to the front of the Battroid. I mean, it would look so damned cool. And once the ordnance is fired, the shoulder wings would act like large shields. This implementation would be a way to shake up the status quo without an entirely novel transformation system. With such a Valkyrie it would present an interesting shift in the way valkyrie weaponry is emphasized. A change to an emphasis on more and more varied wing-mounted ordnance, as opposed to how wing-mounted ordnance has been de-emphasized for a long time in Macross. Perhaps a visual mock up would help sell it. If only I could draw well. Maybe I'll try building something in Photoshop to help describe it.- 2715 replies

Macross Δ (Delta) - announcement thread
Mr March replied to renegadeleader1's topic in Movies and TV Series
I am a little concerned about the mechanical design for Macross Delta. Even though I love the Macross Frontier mecha, they did suffer from a little too much "familiarity" with regards to the transformation process. I remember commenting on that at the time. I don't necessarily blame Kawamori; there's only so much that can be done transforming a plane into a robot, especially at this point in the franchise. Also, it's not like Kawamori has any contemporaries or even proteges from which to challenge himself or from which to draw inspiration. His work is pretty much in a class all it's own, which is also one of his great accomplishments in mechanical design. I guess I'm hoping for at least a new style, if not anything new or different with the transformation systems. I think I'd really like a valkyrie with wings upon the arms. Like outside the shoulder blade, flat along the bicep. Like a shield, except mounted upon the shoulder. I think i would like that very much, almost like a valkyrie version of his Gundam Physalis design. The wings could also be attached mid-wing at the shoulder, so the wings rise partially above the shoulder height; half wing above shoulder level, the other half below shoulder level. And it would be a valkyrie capable of retaining wing-mounted ordnance in Battroid mode, that could also be fired in Battroid mode! Oh, baby- 2715 replies

Just got back from seeing it; I enjoyed the film and it is very entertaining, but it has it's flaws. I agree with many critics that the format of these superhero films feel worn at this point. Antman's script sure doesn't do much to distinguish the film and sadly there is little in the way of surprises. Corey Stoll was also tragically underutilizied as the main antagonist, though it's through no fault of the actor. Yet, the film won me over in spite of these flaws, particularly thanks to strong performances from the three leads Michael Douglas, Evangeline Lilly, and Paul Rudd. All of them sell each role very well and Paul Rudd expectedly turns in an excellent comedic performance that sustains the audience through what could have been a cringe-inducing story. Even better, Michael Pena delivers one of the funniest standout performances of the film, particularly during his re-telling of two very clever second-hand bro-story sequences that had me laughing in tears. The special effects were also a real treat, done with a lot of creativity and energy that gave the whole film a unique look all it's own. The implementation of Antman's powers were incredibly fun and even emotionally moving. This movie might make you reconsider the next ant you think to step on I'd rate Antman 3 out of 5. I feel Antman comes up short (just go with it) against Marvel's best and I'd say all my current Marvel favorites stand a head above it (for the record, Ironman, Captain America TWS, Avengers 1 & 2, Guardians). But I'd also say Antman was far more entertaining as a fun film than almost all the other Marvel movies not on my list. It's worth it for a good time at the movies. Oh, and the stinger at the half-credits was absolutely awesome

I find solace in that, even if it is disturbing how exploitative it is. The purchasing power of that particular portion of the consumer market is very apparent in the "success" of Harmony Gold up to this point. Two non-event animated movies and a failed kickstarter over 30 years. This kind of consumer base is the next best thing to HG having no consumer base.

I must admit, it's been a VERY long time since I've encountered anyone even remotely involved in the anime world THAT naive and uninformed. In the latter 1990s and early 2000s? Sure. Today? Only Entertainment Tonight could possibly get Macross/Robotech/HG any more wrong.

Yes, I've seen all three seasons (of the American remake/reimagining on Netflix, which I assume is the one to which you are referring). It's kinda trashy and not nearly as sophisticated as it puts on, but it's my kind of trashy and very entertaining.

Definitely looks interesting. For me, Singer has yet to put out a bad X-Men film, so I'm definitely willing to give this new one a chance. They are definitely going to an interesting place with the characters and especially the use of Apocalypse. The idea of the cult of personality is always fertile ground for drama, but just the idea of a world reordering is timely given the problems our own nations have been facing. I think Apocalypse will really play on that seduction because a reordering of the world is what a lot of folks are feeling. And whether it turns out to be a good film or bad, Oscar Isaac is going to nail the role, like has been with everything else.

Her performance as Xenia was amazing. You could tell Famke was having so much fun playing that character I've always enjoyed Janssen's performances, whether it was Kamala on Trek, Xenia in Bond, Grey in X-Men. or Moore from Nip/Tuck. Famke has never disappointed. She's like Ethan Hawke, Allison Pill, Keith David, or Margo Martindale; just one of those really solid working character actors that you can always rely upon for a believable performance with nuance.

Your work looks intriguing and I'd love to see your fan film. Just know that the Macross property is a legal quagmire, far more convoluted (at least on the public side) than most other franchises. Plus you've got an IP predator like HG whose business model is legal intimidation to reap the rewards of an IP with an ever-dwindling nostalgia market of diminishing returns until pretty much nothing is left. I think everyone has already covered the bases about what this sort of endeavour entails. I especially think Azrael has the right idea (Dirty Laundry, FTW!), make the fan film but leave out all of Macross, make the implications of what it is all unspoken and non-specific. That way, at worst, it can be an homage to Macross. Yes, only fans will get what it is you're doing, but this is a "fan film" anyway, so it shouldn't matter.
