Forgot to mention Miles Vorkosigan novels - just about any of them. Cordelia's Honor - Deals with his father and Mother. It is two novels in one, first one is damsel in distress stuff (but the characters are interesting) - the Second one though is excellent. It is an action story, but hidden in that is what artificial gestation can mean to a society (and what it means to be a mother). It also deals with euthanasia and how hard it can be for society to catch up with technological progress (all the Miles Vorkosigan novels seem to do this to some extent) The Mountains of Mourning - Miles has to adjudicate a case of murder. In this instance a father killed his infant child who had a cleft lip (I think, it was something we recognize as minor). The law had recently changed making that illegal, but the old customs demanded that any "mutant" be killed at birth (for good reasons, the planet had been in some kind of nuclear/biological attack a few generations back and was cutoff from the rest of the galaxy). Lest I forget to mention - Miles is a hunchback dwarf from birth (hyperactive too)...

Science Fiction Covers a lot of topics, and I have so many I like - plus I am a military SciFi kind of guy, so here is my list. Starship Troopers - well written argument for a different kind of government (even if I don't agree with it), and powered armor, nuff said. (movie is crap, fun to watch, but crap) Childhood's End - An oddball on my list since there is no military connection as such. Well written and interesting, saying more give the plot away. Enders Game/Ender's War - Both feature clear sharp writing (no endless detail, I like that). Ender's Game is about how far you are willing to go to win a war, characters are well drawn and interesting. Ender's War includes a sequal about a meeting of worlds between humans and an alien species. It deals with forgiveness and understanding of alien cultures. It also has a good take on what time dilation can do to someone who travels a lot at near-c In the Balance - First of the World War titles by Harry Turtledove, lizard like aliens with modern technology attack the Earth in the middle of WWII. Good characterization and excellent battle accounts. Ends up being four books total - and then another series of books follows up during the sixties. Guns of the South - South African racists use a time machine to give the Confederates AK-47 rifles during the Civil War. Interesting for the characterizations of Lee and other historical figures. This is more of a What-if then science fiction. Hardly any mention (if any) of how the Time Machine works if that is important to you. The Lost Fleet book series (I think Dauntless is the first). Almost didn't like this one, some of the characters get downright annoyingly stupid or pigeonholed. The Space battles take into account proper communication time lag though. The plot gets better over the course of the second and third books (enough so that I bought the 4th and 5th books...) On Basilisk Station - Age of Sail naval warfare, IN SPACE!!!!, the tech is written in such a way that old style broadside to broadside battles are a possability. The character of Honor Harrington is very interesting in this book - and has not become the uber duper super woman she becomes in the later novels. If you want an old fashion naval battle in science fiction garb this is a good book. Old Man's War - Old fart joins the Colonial Marines, saying more gives it away. The author is darn good with jokes and characterization, the medical technology is well done, the jump drive sounds silly. The plot zings along and dialog goes at a rapid pace, only major problem is the number of times he writes "She Says" or "He Says", eventually it feels like getting slapped - the writer HAS to find a better way to note that a character is saying something...

Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time
Dynaman replied to JELEINEN's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
I read somewhere there is a good reason for that, the movie was made for 10 Million, and the guy making the movie happened to own the building. (or he knew the owner who let him film there for free) -
What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v3.0
Dynaman replied to wolfx's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Just watched Yamato Revival. It was not terrible, but it was not great either. The main problem was it seemed to have taken a 26 hour plot and crammed it into a 2 hour movie. Best description for it would be muddled. Not really much of a spoiler, but I thought I better mark it anyway. None of the minor characters get enough characterization to make them stand out, and even Kodai and family are just introduced and nothing really seems to happen. Mighty nice seeing the Yamato in action again though. -
Yeah - but just wait till they are start yelling at him...

Breetai(*) and Exsodore were in that animated item too - and in the new one they could not even use the word Zentradi anymore, so the fact it was animated way way back before the lawsuit made it clear they had no right to use the designs from Macross doesn't really mean anything. (*) - By Breetai I mean some big buy with a bucket on his head called Breetai, supposedly is the same character from The Macross Saga...
-
A good retcon could take care of that.

I don't think the asthetics had anything to do with the decision to "remodel" the ship. I think there are two reasons for that being done. 1 - The original is too obviously a Zentradi inspired design, can get away with that in a comic but maybe not in animation. 2 - All the curvy lines and protuberances on the original would have been hell on their Computer Animation budget. I *like* the Mospeda designs, a line from the movie "Crazy People" sums it up best "Boxy but nice"

Stripers + Guns + Mazinkaizer = WFT?

I was never a Mazinger fan, seems like that might change though. I did notice how similar the Mazinger Head attachement scene was to the similar thing from Garren Lagan. -
Macross Frontier Movie 1,YES it is subbed now edition
Dynaman replied to sharky's topic in Movies and TV Series
There just is not time for it either, a 12.5 hour series can afford to reveal things more slowly, a couple of 1.5 to 2 hour movies has to get the plot rolling quickly. Things were disjointed in the movie enough as is, trying to show Grace as a bad manager for half the movie and then burn more time showing she was really a baddie would make it even more jumpy. -

I've been watching Glass Fleet, pretty standard stuff so far. Still have to get back to some of the classics streaming on Hulu and other sites (GE 999, etc...) -

The triangle is one of the things the movie has right (I agree with you). One scene I really liked was near the end where it is obvious that Alto is trying not to hurt the feelings of Ranka or Sheryl. It will be interesting to see how the Aimo song plays out in the movie version part 2 as well. -

Macross Frontier Movie 1,YES it is subbed now edition
Dynaman replied to sharky's topic in Movies and TV Series
Just saw it last night, I liked it, but I liked the series better. Unlike the original SDFM and DYRL, the increased budget for the movie was not enough to make up for the lost "content". As others have mentioned the plot does seem a bit disjointed. On the plus side, I like the movie version of Klan and Ranka much better - animation wise, plot and character wise they are about the same (which is good). -
This is the new century, that *IS* Wingman. I mean, he was most likely dumped by his old girlfriend...

Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time
Dynaman replied to JELEINEN's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
I loved Flesh Gordan, "The pain, the embarrasement, the Hemroids". And actual One Eyed Snakes... (OK - been a while, they might not have been snakes per say, but the sound effect when they blinked their eye was priceless). -

His solution to that problem was amusing though. Am I one of the few people in this world that actualy like this movie? (Note - I do not claim it is a good movie, I just happen to like it) -
What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v3.0

Tried to watch the first episode of Strike Witches today, couldn't get past the first ten minutes (cat in the tree scene was the end for me). I never felt so dirty watching Anime before - and I'm a "Pop Chaser" fan too. [edit] - I also watched, and generally liked "Elfen Lied". I think the difference for me was that here the fan service was trying to be cute and it just came out perverted, where in Elfen Lied the subject matter and tone of the series lent itself to a more mature rating. -
If that is all wikipedia says on the matter then it is flat out wrong. The one thing that is ALWAYS verboten with a trademark is releasing a directly competing item using the trademark. As an example - Anyone tries to release an Apple computer (or shall we say a computer with another fruit like logo, which did happen) and Apple will (and did) put a stop to it. As for why HG will not go after Macross Plus and the other Items they let slip through in the early nineties, at this point they would have to take the owners to court (on their own dime) to get them to stop, and there is no guarantee that they would win the case - and they could lose their trademark by trying to do so, or weaken their claim by having the Original Macross owners in Japan get an exception allowing them to use the trademark as it relates to Macross the brand here in the US.
-
Apple Incorporated (the computer company) vs Apple Core (the Beatles). That would be a good place to look. (not sure if it ever went to court but it is a case of similar trademarks)
-
If they could turn "I Robot" into a film then they can certainly handle Pern, "I Robot" being a good sign or a bad sign I'm not so sure about... (Although I personally liked the film - I was expecting an action movie with a bit more going for it then normal and that is just what I got, and I had the urge to buy a pair of sneakers right after the movie for some reason)
-
They did it through a quirk in US LAW, other countries do things by first use, the US does it by the first to register the name. Helping them is the fact that they licensed the first Macross product (SDFM) for US use back in the eighties. (PS - I could be off on the details, but it is through a quirk in US law that they are able to trademark the name - and I don't think anyone has tried to legally take it from them yet)
