The pilot is a cameo from the side-story manga Hoshizuki no Kakera. His name is Dies Robin (ディエス・ロビン) and he doesn't appear in the novel.

Well, the very only thing Macross tried to copy Gundam was with the Macross Ace and Macross The First. But Macross Ace is on hiatus and The First is made by Mikimoto who takes his time to finish a manga.

In France, mangas with mecha are absolutely not popular. Gundam manga (The Origin and Ecole du Ciel) for example are a flop. The market in France is also too saturated. Publishers release mainly what is marketable. As TheLoneWolf said, Macross is a niche license. In Italy, there is more chance I think. It depends. If you really want to learn a language you can succeed.

Wrong. The annoucement was in late 2006, IIRC, with the contest won by Nakajima. The first episode (Deculture edition) was aired for Christmas 2007 and the TV series began in spring 2008. Dynamite 7 for the 15th.

I don't know if all Blu-ray are region-free. But I'm French (so in the region B) and I can watch each Blu-ray of Bandai that I own. The first movie was also region-free.
