The computer and electronics super geek thread

....And that's how it happened for me as well. Here's my new Ookla speed-test result: VS Now, the first test was with my laptop hooked up directly to the cable modem; optimal conditions. Once I got my Flinstones-era router up and running this is what I got: Not as nice as the first results but practical use on my end was far better than what I had just 24 hours ago. Is this the point where I start looking at a new router, or should I just buy a bunch of ethernet cables and plug everything in my house directly? If so, would I be buying cat5e or cat6 cables? Again the current model is a Netgear WGR 614V9. Ultimately guys, I can't thank you enough for all of your support. God bless the internet, Macrossworld and.......................Holly Michaels.... -

I picked up an SB6141 for about $72 shipped; I'm hoping this will solve my issues. So...do I just unplug the original modem and plug in the new one? Or do I have to call Cox to get it on their system or whatever? -
LOL. Yeah words fail me on that clip. I will say however that if people can rave over Pacific Rim then that Telemundo/Sabado Gigante version of Macross should be equally worshipped...

Just standard shipping, but then tax kicks in and it's approaching Best Buy's prices; at least with Best Buy I don't have to wait and I HATE waiting for new toys. I'll probably go with the "open box" ones I see on ebay for $75... -

Yeah I was going to Best Buy tomorrow but it's $100; Amazon's the same with shipping. I found it on ebay for about $75. I don't like the idea of buying it used but I'll give it a shot... -

Right. Well, I'm going to start with the cable modem first, then I'll see if I need to get a new router also. I tried reading up on routers but, like my foray into choosing a flat screen, it's starting to give me a headache... -

I was JUST about to type that up; I had to dig through a pile of G Taste and Alternator's boxes to get to it. The router is a Netgear WGR61454/802.11G. Wow-this thing is 11 years old. Anyway my PS3, PS4, Toshiba and Dell laptops, and the occasional i-whatever connects to this router; I don't THINK I have a lot of load on this unit, as no more than two or three devices are on simultaneously... -

Why would Cox throttle DOCSIS 2.0 users like me? Lemme guess-so we'll buy their stupid modem and upgrade our plan? Well if that's the case then screw them-I'll go get that SB 6141 on my own. Should I try the speed test with the computer connected directly to the modem instead of the router? How do I know if my router is "good enough?" -

Ok 'Az and Mike, thanks for the clarification. Cox has a dual-band unit I can rent for $10 a month for the next few years, or I can buy one from them for $150. I've seen the SB1641 go for $80 online so if I don't need an all-in-one modem (based on my reads I don't think they're what I want) then I'd rather buy my own, single purpose modem. Honestly, I still find it hard to believe that changing modems will increase my internet performance though: My current modem is rated at a maximum of 30 Mbps, so do I even need another one? I think Mike is right about not even needing to buy one; there has to be another issue at hand here... -

So I got a few pop-ups and emails from Cox communications stating that they'd upgraded their cable internet and that I needed to replace my Motorola Surfboard 5101 cable modem to take advantage of their wonderful new upgraded cable service. Coincidentally, my downloading speeds have been TEH SUCK, as of late. The messages from Cox conveniently allowed me to select a new rental or a purchase plan that would include a "DOCSIS 3.0" cable modem. Are cable internet providers truly upgrading their service speeds? Is my current Motorola 5101 in need of replacement (38Mbps maximum download speed)? Should I buy one of "their" DOCSIS 3.0 all-in-one modems or should I go on my own and buy something like the Motorola SB6141 that is just a dedicated cable modem? Should I buy an all-in-one cable modom/router? Will I need to buy a new router to take advantage of my wonderfully new and fast cable internet service, DOCSIS 3.0 modem and lighter wallet? I normally couldn't be bothered with this sort of thing since I stopped online gaming, but when I want to see Holly Michaels getting pile-driven by a bunch of well-hung construction workers I want to see it on my screen NOW... Thanks in advance, guys.... -

Why would we want a jet to turn into a robot and vice versa, save for the realization of our imaginations and fantasies? I don't see a practical use for such a machine...

Bah, that's what most "top" lists, be it for anime, cars, boob jobs, whatever, are all about; egocentrical musings and preferences of whoever made the list in the first place. At best, I use top-lists to learn about something I may not have known much about prior to seeing a list. For example, I never knew that September Carrino was a JJ size cup until I saw her on someone's "top" list...

Wow, you really DO have the holy grail of t.v.'s; that thing's been the top of the chain since '08. Anyway thanks again for all of your input and resources; I've learned more from your posts than I have from anywhere else. I'm liking the 'Pan ST-60 even though it's 50% more than I'd like to spend. However, it has very high praise from its owners and CNET, which more than makes it worth the extra expense, IMO. Honestly, I don't really game on t.v.'s, that's what I have my Toshiba Qosmio X505-898 laptop for, but I just "liked" the idea of having a t.v. capable of twitch gaming. Actually, I'm a fan of 2D fighters so having a t.v. capable of supporting my consoles IS important, but honestly I can't remember the last time I played Capcom vs SNK 2 so it may be a moot point. At this point I may stop looking at input lag and just focus on picture quality, which changes the dynamic of my research completely. Question: if I were to link my laptop (that has no issues with lag of any kind) to any t.v. would the "input lag" issue be null and void? I'm assuming that the t.v. would just become a display and wouldn't have to process the actual game signal? I would prefer a plasma, but I can't really control the lighting levels in my living room which might make for a disappointing viewing experience. -

Gil Gadot? She's pretty but she's not WW quality. I don't want WW to be some buffed up thing either; muscular builds on a girl are a crime against newborn kittens and humanity..

The Wolverine FILMS (X-Men Universe)
myk replied to antibiotictab's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Initial criticism of the film on a personal level is the villains: I didn't care about the summersaulting, cart-wheeling, ninja star throwing evil foot clan soldiers, the lame chick with the molting skin and bad breath, or the old guy in the Shredder suit. I was just not impressed. I truly enjoyed the first Wolverine movie though.. -

Agreed. What a waste of a movie. The story was so uninspiring that you couldn't help but be bored watching it...
