  1. The factory floor shots look a lot more cluttered than I had imagined. Not sure that's a bad thing, but definitely interesting.
  2. Yeah, getting around some of the inherent "toyness" of some of these designs must have its own challenges. I love how you capture the look of these things and make them look great, without making them look too toylike in the process. It's a very fine line that you walk very well.

Summed it up perfectly, Chronocidal! If someone gave me one of these, and I had no idea what it cost, I'd be seriously impressed. It's small, well proportioned, detailed, has a zillion cool parts (I'm talking about the Armored VF-1J I have) and overall, it's a small version of my childhood that I can hold and whoosh around the room with! It's only when I realise how much it costs that I start to feel a bit sour about it. But that's not really a fair judgement for many reasons. Firstly, I purchased all my VF-1 toys at a serious discount, making them much less than I paid for this new "little" toy. And secondly, I have not purchased an Arcadia VF-1 toy of any description. Why? Because they're too expensive! Also, because I'm still comparing the "new" cost to what I paid, which was not an accurate price for the toy, to begin with! If I'd started my collection Post-Arcadia, I think I'd feel quite differently about all this. TL DR: The Bandai toy isn't so bad after all.
  4. Wow! That is amazing! You can see the fuel level drop, too. Crazy stuff. I want to know how that test "table" was mounted and didn't get carried away though.

Yamato heatshields are solid coloured plastic, not clear. And in varying colours too (red, black, white...)
  6. She's a beaut!
  7. I've got a PayPal billing agreement with them. So as soon as the order was ready for payment, it happened. Nothing I could do. I'm not too upset by it. Missed out on another 5% discount on an order of about $100 so it's no big deal. Here were the terms: • The Black Friday Sale discount is per order that you've placed and been charged for during the campaign period. If you have multiple orders in payment processing, we're afraid they aren't able to be manually combined to make a greater total value, sorry!

Thanks for the link, Old Man. I didn't realise it was due for release in April. Maybe there will be others listed up at release time from places like HLJ. Will have to keep that in mind.

Aussie dollar has slipped below 75 cents to the US dollar. It's bad, bad, bad. Hasn't been this low since I moved here in 2003. It just means I have to be very selective about what I spend my money on. Luckily the Yen is remaining pretty close to the AUD right now so it's not all bad. I think it's 88 at the moment. So for NY's 10,120 yen, that makes it about 114 AUD. Plus shipping... I just have to keep reminding myself it's got all the parts with it. Gone are the days of getting a Yamato bundle for less than 100. It is, what it is.
  10. That looks awesome! Excellent work there!

I like the HMR toys for what they are, small, detailed, well designed, little toys. But I don't like the price. Or the stupid availability. Or lack thereof, I should say. I wanted a Roy version and totally missed it. As for price, they cost close to $150 Aussie dollars. That just seems too steep, given the size and build quality. I suppose a fully dressed Arcadia would be double that, though...
  12. As an added punch in the guts, I didn't read the fine print very well and assumed I could make a few orders over the sale period, and put them in my private warehouse, in order to equal the full discount qty. Turns out you can't. It all has to be in one transaction. It doesn't specifically state this, but it does state something about "payment processing" meaning as long as you get all your orders done before payment is made, you're probably covered. But it's a total crapshoot to know how much time that is. I'm sure there are instances where "payment processing" happens within minutes of placing the order. Oh well...
  13. It works very well indeed. I'm not sure if it's quite subtle though. I'm thinking the camera/sensor unit now looks a little 2 dimensional. But given how slow everything is going, I'm reluctant to spend more time getting it "right" - whatever that is. Here are a few photos directly from my phone. Usually I upload to my google+ account and link to thumbnails, but again, that takes more time than I seem to have at the moment. Some seam work. The silver peaking out from beneath a freshly applied instrument decal. The extra silver will be painted black to match up to the black outline of the decal. The decals by the way, are terribly shaped and sized for the panels they go on. I had to carefully cut this one into three parts to get all three panels in the right place. Off the sheet, it's all one piece. The "masking" with blue tack inside the edges of the recess for the lens. Why bother? I'd lined it with black and you can still see this with the lens in place. Besides, masking with blue tack is a skill I need to work on. Because it's flexible, it tends to not stay where you want it. I used a toothpick to pull it away after I'd smashed it into place. It worked really well and was much better than trying to put it in place with fingers alone. Heat Shield and Head: And my first attempt at a dot filter. This is all three oils I currently own, brown, black and white. Mostly white was used as the other two are very strong. I used a toothpick and hardly any paint. Before brushing: After:
  14. Seriously? No one? Those mermice are amazing!
  15. Very interesting to see the difference between the different 1J releases. I guess the 1S and 1A unassembled kits would have been that more pinkish white, given the release time. Maybe? Maybe not. I've got one of each but never bothered to compare the whites. And the 1S kit is now covered in paint so it'd be tricky to get a good idea of color differences. As for VF-1s I'm missing - nearly all of them! I had a Super 1A (Hikaru) and then bought a 1J before giving the 1A a new home in Michigan. *I decided to just get Hikaru valks from the TV series. So I kept the 1J and my 1S kit will be Skull 1 as soon as I get it built. Technically it's the 1A kit. So if there are differences, hopefully they'll be minor enough between the kit version and pre-assembled version. *Of course that means I still need a VF-1D. Damn you, toy scarcity!
  16. Payment on my HLJ Super Messiah was made this morning. Guess they're available now.
  17. Trying to stick with my half hour per day commitment. Got about an hour and a half tonight, to make up for previous night's misses. I'll update the main thread soon, but here's what's done tonight. Head has had the seems filled and repainted and the heat sheild got some camo treatment.
  18. Bold emphasis, mine - I think these were specifically described and used in the Robotech universe, in order to explain how it all worked so well. I don't think Macross ever utilised a helmet system that interfaced with the pilot's brain in any way. Well, actually that was covered in Plus and Frontier, but in Plus, it was an experimental system (used in the YF-21) that ended up being deemed too dangerous and discarded (the VF-22 that was based on the YF-21 didn't have it). And for Frontier, only cyborgs from the Galaxy fleet were flying the brain interface Valks.
  19. While I think it would, there's just no way he'd have the space to put something that big. Even if it "just" 15 inches tall. Thanks all for the feedback.
  20. I've always assumed it was a mix of auto controls and pilot input. Advanced computers know how to "walk" when the environment variables are right. The pilot doesn't need to specifically do this. So on this case, joystick input telling battroid mode to go forward, initiates a walking action from the computer. In the same way, more complex maneuvers like a kick or a punch, would involve targeting a point on your enemy and using whatever button is assigned for punch or kick, with the computer picking the best way to do that. Think old school street fighter arcade games - you can do some cool stuff with nothing more than a joystick and six buttons. It's still lacking, but gets me over the suspension of disbelief that I'd otherwise have.
  21. Thanks guys. I'll grab a chibi and an HG for my boy and an RG for myself.
  22. 1/48!!!? How big is that? The size of a small person? Sounds awesome! EDIT: apparently about 37.5cm (15") tall. Not as big as I thought but still large and in charge!
  23. Gents - I've read many, many pages of this epicly long thread and still am not sure about this question - for my very clever, very curious 7 year old son, who loves Lego and is very creative for his age, but otherwise has zero model building experience, where would you recommend I start with a Gundam kit? I initially looked at an HG RX-78 kit but then saw the RG kits. And then noticed all the different options in the smaller scale and quickly got overwhelmed. There are also the Chibi kits that might be perfect to start off with. Decisions, decisions... Anyone else been in my shoes and have some advice?
  24. That looks incredible! Love your work so far and can't wait to see it all completed. You're going to have a hard time letting it go when it's completed.
