Seconded! You make the HM-R really look like it's far more poseable than anything that's been available preceding it. Perhaps that's because it actually is more poseable. -
Bandai to release Star Wars Model kits
mickyg replied to Wiz13688's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
But where to buy, given the lack of international licensing the whole Star Wars/Bandai agreement is?- 188 replies

Unpublished Robotech Pages (Antarctic Press)
mickyg replied to cwmodels's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
These are incredible! And totally within the gaps that the original Macross story left out as well. And Hikaru and co returning in that Regult are such a great touch as well! Very nice work. -
Definitely!

Outrageously good! Love your work! Would love to know how you achieved the shading on the intake covers, especially. That's just beautiful and knowing how small those parts are, it's very impressively done.

It's actually been discussed in depth in a few of the more technical aircraft and valk threads. The gist is that yes, there are two fans on the VF-1 series and the one you see is indeed the first one and it's actually meant to be quite close to the opening. The logic, as far as I'm aware, has never been fully explained in technical terms that everyone can agree on, but as far as I'm aware the best explanation (and the one I'm comfortable with) is that the first fan is needed for gerwalk and sucking air into the ducts when forward speed isn't great. It's also needed as a device for slowing the air down at supersonic speeds, much the same way ramps, cones and spill ducts are used in modern intakes in jet engines. As for why a fan is needed at all - when in atmosphere, the nuclear reaction heats the incoming air, exactly how burning jet fuel does in conventional engines. So the compressor serves exactly the same purpose, to super heat and speed up the air coming in. It is, in fact, totally necessary in that regard. Back to the thread - nice pics guys!

So that's why there was a May preorder, then?

Beasts of the Mesozoic Dinosaur figures

I'm the same. Still can't get used to dinos with feathers. -
Nice! Just need it back in stock at HLJ and I'm sorted.

Same here. Been down that road before with the 25F and then the 25S. Never did get the latter...

Bandai Macross Δ Mecha Collection Small Scale Plastic Model Kits
mickyg replied to IXTL's topic in Model kits
Hmmm... Looks painted, with just some of the smaller details in sticker form. That's a bit sneaky. -
Nice! Love the look of that one.

Bandai Macross Δ Mecha Collection Small Scale Plastic Model Kits

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing. I get it, they're super cheap and I'm OK with what you get for the money, but it certainly has me wondering what can be done to make them a bit better for a small investment. I can answer the "turning stickers into decals" question for you - scan them and turn them into a vector drawing that can be printed on decal paper. But that will only work for the dark areas. If there are white markings and they go over dark plastic, it's not going to work. White decal paper might be an option but not if there are places you'd have to cut small areas from the paper - that'd just be too hard to pull off correctly. As for the missing markings on the inside of the tails, I'm with ya there, too. I also notice there's absolutely nothing on the underside of the fighter. So a quick observation about what likely needs paint to really get a completed look: Engine/feet Intake covers Sides of the legs (should be the same purple as the top of the fighter) I have to stress again though, I like what you get for the money! -
Thanks Anubis. Bummer. But it's a small thing.

Can the shoulder be swapped to the other side on these? I can't remember as it's been awhile since my Isamu type has seen anything but fighter mode.

Wow Saburo, you make me regret getting rid of my old VF-1A. Such a classy scheme on those DYRL 1A variants. -
Just throwing it out there but I find this sort of discussion is entirely appropriate. I had no idea there was any debate about the actual name of the planet! I too was going on the subs as well as the Bandai fold/speaker set for what it was called. I find this sort of "behind the scenes" fascinating and honestly, in my opinion, it is a "short question" in every sense of the term: "What was that planet in Frontier actually called?" Of course, I may be in the minority and that's fine. Just wanted to say thanks for the guys who take the time to explain some of this stuff, even when it is quite involved and maybe not everyone's idea of a simple question and answer section on this thread. Carry on...

Didn't think I'd be interested but that price was something I didn't expect. Pre-ordered! ...for May. Unusual bandai DX buying experience there.

No, there's definitely some weirdness going on between the two sides. I took macro shots of it, even. One side is sharply molded and the other is, well, not. It looks like the mold had some tolerance issues or something. But to the best of my knowledge, it's so common that I wouldn't be surprised if they're all that way. Someone with toy manufacturing knowledge can chime in here, but is it common to only have one tool for casting plastic parts? Would that be crazy? If there are multiple molds for the parts, you'd expect some distribution in said "soft" detail on samples.
-
Regarding the paint scraping, mine too. I had to trim mine a bit and then use a flat tipped screw driver to carefully push the part in place. Eventually they'll sort of click into place. I'm not even sure the trimming was necessary, to be honest.

Regarding manoeuvring thrusters (verniers) there appear to be the same ones that are in the nose of the VF-25 series. You have to look hard but there are three in the nose. One on either side, right in-line with the painted stripe. The one on top is at the front of the anti-glare paint in front of the canopy. Here's a great shot previously posted by Noel a few days ago: Obviously there are no classic "Macross" round hole with handle styled boosters and this does indeed make me a bit sad. They are definitely iconic and missed in this design.

Delta, that's a pretty common issue and almost makes me think the mold was cast that way by mistake. There are a few fixes for it, and it's possible I even posted something about it in this very thread. As I recall, it entailed using a hobby knife to cut off some of the extra flat part of the tab. And I'm just recalling that it also clips into one of the hardpoints under the wing as well. Have a look and see if that helps at all.
