Bandai Macross Δ Mecha Collection Small Scale Plastic Model Kits
mickyg replied to IXTL's topic in Model kits
I'm already wondering how easy it'll be to slice the decks on the carriers and angle them, so it actually looks like the cruiser mode we see in the show. It's cool (even very cool) but annoying it's not shown the way it always looks on the show. -
Totally does! I forgot to mention that I do this a lot with the wider tape. I lay a strip on my cutting mat, use a nice all metal straight edge and cut multiple strips, often as wide a mm to do the really fine stuff. Works a treat!
-
One thing I've learned from using the stuff is that it's extremely flexible. That makes it really good for following contours and panel lines if it's properly pushed down beforehand. I'm not sure what the fine line stuff is you're referring to, but if it's what I think, it may be better at making sure the line is straight. That's probably the one area where Tamiya tape can be a bit frustrating. It's so flexible, it can be difficult to get it to keep a straight line. Clean edge, no problem though.

Works really well for fine edges. As long as you burnish it down really well (using a toothpick helps for this but you can also use the back of your fingernail). Also, the benefits of a water based paint (Tamiya, Gunze Aqueous, etc...) are that if you mess up, some windex will clean it right up. Of course the drawbacks are that it's not as durable. If you want durability, go with a good lacquer. They don't clean up nearly as easily, of course. And they stink...

Ah, the F-15 kits! I remember these well. They are different kits! As I recall, the cheaper one is raised panel lines and a much, much older kit with the fitment issues and cruder details that you'd expect. If you search for differences between old and new Hasegawa 72 scale f-15 kits, you should find a few articles on forums, similar to what you've posted. Hope that helps.

Outstanding! Love all the effort you're putting into this. Thanks for the updates! You must be learning so much with this project.

Someone remind me again why "regular" stores like HLJ and HobbySearch don't get these exclusive but NY, AE BiJ and MK seem to get them without any issues?
-
Check that zone-five link I posted earlier Derex, that's the guy who designed them in the first place. His painted examples are incredible! If you do it, I will SOOOOO want to pay you visit and see it!
-
Just what I thought! I've been following this guys work over here for a little while now: http://zone-five.net/showthread.php?t=29992 I thought that's what you were referring to after I read your initial comments. The guy has some really great stuff, doesn't he?
-
Links man, links! Which "carrier crew" dost thou speak of?
-
I think a good portion of that curvature is actually barrel distortion from whatever camera was used to take those pics. It's not very easy to pick out because there aren't a lot of horizontal reference lines in the pics themselves. But the vertical lines near the sides give it away. Still, there may be some curve there. And without a doubt, she's a thick bird!

That's right, folks - it's paper... Awesome, as usual, Nyanko!
-
Ah, gotcha - "Support" not "explanation" for why. I was hoping they explained why but understand now that they did not.
-
I didn't catch that in 23 - mind elaborating? Spoiler tags if it's spoilery (obviously).
-
It looks phenomenal! Great work there, my friend!

Nice! I'm somewhat baffled by what looks like missiles coming out of the knees though. -
1/72 Bandai VF-25F Messiah build-up step-by-step (sort of)
mickyg replied to wm cheng's topic in The Workshop!
Hi Gatsu, I'm not WM but I can help with the question regarding how to disassemble. I hope WM doesn't mind my jumping in. Most of the process involves cutting a diagonal piece out of the pegs that find into the holes. For round pegs, you simply use your clippers to slice a side of the peg off at an angle. You end up with something that's still round on at least half the sides, so it still fits. But the payoff is that it doesn't fit so crazy tight as before. The same can be done with the square pegs that fit into slots. Just cut part of it off so it still aligns but doesn't fit with quite so much surface area. In cases where neither of the above are possible, you can also cut a relief into the holes themselves. Just cut a slot into one side of the wall on a hole and that'll allow it to flex when you pull it apart. Hope that helps. I'll let the master of metallics answer the rest regarding alclad. I've got some experience but nowhere near the level he does. -
Looks fantastic! Question: do the instructions show the front gear installed that way/does it only fit that way? If so, it's bass-ackwards. The bar is pointing to the rear, and that's the bit that engages the shuttle on the catapult for carrier operations. I think I've seen a few photos online with it installed that way and have been wondering ever since.
-
Yeah, that's true. But the proportions are way off too. The VF-25 kits proportionally, were just too small. Things like the arms, bodies and heads just didn't scale well to Hasegawa 1/72 pilots. I'm hoping the VF-31 (and SV-262) kits have fixed that but it wouldn't surprise me if they're the same size.
-
DOH! I completely forgot the front detaches and it's not a whole booster. OK, comment respectfully retracted...
-
Whoa! So it only comes with the strike pack? The old releases had both super parts, plus the strike cannon. Probably a smart cost cutting measure but I'm still a bit surprised.
-
Depends how well scaled the Bandai VF-31 pilots are. I know the VF-25 Bandai kits had pilots that looked decidedly 1/100 scale and definitely not 1/72.

Bandai Macross Δ Mecha Collection Small Scale Plastic Model Kits
mickyg replied to IXTL's topic in Model kits
Built a few of these already but this is the first I've out any effort into painting. It's crude, even by my standards but I'm still impressed with what you can achieve with a bit of paint and forethought into how you segment (and cut) the stickers before placing them. The blue green was very hard to get right and the pics make it look much too green (still). The purple grey was a touch easier, with a mix of gunship Gray and violet. Why Bandai gives you one colour for one model and another for a different one is beyond me. The 31S needs the back plate to be purple Gray and the legs to be metallic, along with the spine. The 31J is molded in purple Gray already but has the legs this colour too, and they should be painted metallic instead - what the 31s is already out of the box. They're 5 dollar kits though and darn good for the price. -
Still Gray? Overall I mean. The movie one is decidedly gray. I always thought of the tv one as White.
