Theatrical, Director's, Extended, Unrated, and Special
Einherjar replied to Duke Togo's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
If a movie, series, or video game set has a name near the ballpark of "The Ultimate Edition" of something, I really don't want to see another set unseating its Ultimate-ness a few years later with marginal improvements in video and audio quality, extra scenes, and etc. I paid good money the first time to get the whole experience and a bag of chips. -
The effort to have a fair conversation doesn't seem to be worth it. It wasn't worth it back in '08, it isn't worth it in '11, especially when Robotech hasn't gone anywhere during that time. Maybe next year when there could be something significant to talk about the franchise (maybe). He is, after all, just a very, very, very, very, very small drop in the bucket of the Internet.

About that, to me it's pretty messed up that MEMO, a "big name" in the fandom, is acting as a sort of intermediary between you two, a.k.a. an enabler. He's acting like an idiot hoping it's going to be a stimulating, fair and balanced conversation when the talkshoe podcast, and also his own two to be honest, never is. It's just going to be this for an hour or two for a stupid TV show: And I_Fly_For_Firebomber, a lot of people had the same story about getting burned by Robotech. And a lot were genuine, honest people who loved the franchise and got royally screwed by HG or their super fans.

All Things Video Games Thread: II
Einherjar replied to Wanzerfan's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
So that's what the Mutant League animated series was based on. I never knew. -
The Mechwarrior reboot. Can't believe it's already been two years since the fiasco. MechWarrior: Under Development? The kicker is that for all the drama HG started there, they didn't actually do anything significant or have anything significant planned since to justify it.
-
And before anyone starts, think about this: 25 years ago, Robotech and Harmony Gold may or may not helped in bringing anime to the West. 25 years later, Robotech and Harmony Gold are helping prevent specific anime from coming to the West.
-
There's a new Robotech DVD set coming next month. Go to town with it, because, for the foreseeable future, that's all people will ever get from the franchise. In fact, I honestly think most of us will not live to see whatever continuation or revival Harmony Gold has been promising for years. But they will give people "quality" products to keep them busy every single time. You should have been here when there was controversy about the Shadow Fighter toy being so fragile that it had to be recalled, pissing off their own fandom. Then there was the time when the Mechwarrior revival came to a halt because Harmony Gold didn't like a suspicious looking mech being used in the trailer. That's what the franchise and company has mutated into after all these years, a living shadow of the past benefiting few people and pissing off a whole lot more (not just Macross fans). I think it's time they stop relying on the fact that they helped bring anime to the West, or whatever positive spin they use to justify their work these days.

Those poor deus ex machina'd bastards. At least the Zentradi have a more prosperous, and dignified, official future in a living franchise. I'd demand cold hard cash to waste my time with that crap. You got to listen to me. You got to tell them... that the Protoculture is people!!!
-
In fact, who isn't an unseen, unknown enemy who's apparently totally badass in the Robotech universe? You can accurately describe the Haydonites that way as well. It's helped by the fact that a sequel with them as the antagonists hasn't been completed yet, so they've been extra mysterious for years running.

Is that one of the animation cells they give out during panels?
-
Yeah, too bad it is hard to tell which is it from HG and Robotech's perspective. On one hand, there's the promise of another side story and a LAM, like always. But meanwhile, there's only the same 85 episodes with new bells and whistles and other niche products in the immediate future. And then the crew needs to eat. It's definitely not a multimedia empire like Star Wars.

I really wish creators would stick to just a single, perfect version of whatever work they're famous for and not go back and do revisions on it every couple of years. Audio and video clean up jobs I can accept, but not painfully obvious alterations that just cause a lot of controversy. In Harmony Gold's case, however, I guess it sucks that the companies that did that work before either went under or are no longer in friendly terms with them, requiring someone else to do it all over again. Or is it plain greed? I can never tell.

A 3D version of "Top Gun' is coming in 2012
Einherjar replied to rdenham's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I heard Kelly McGillis came out a couple of years ago, so that makes a whole lot of sense now. There's also a real Gay Top Gun parody on youtube. -
I was expecting something like Puma Man, but at least it's better quality-wise than that movie.

Great, half naked volleyball action in 3D. -
I wonder if that kind of loyalty ever paid off after two years?

A direct jab at "acceptable" dubbing back when HG and others were cutting edge in the industry? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KhzBT-FMqY Robotechnology this, Protoculture that.

Look at the bright side; the parody was still a good burn on the story telling methodology they still cling to.

Actually, the crew said they licensed official music for the episode. http://theinfosphere.org/Reincarnation Robotech.com promoted it just before it aired.

People with good ears would be able to hear a small portion of Robotech background music during the battle scene. Not that it was being treated as a big deal anywhere else, but that was it. If people remembered, or cared, then I guess that would be as big of a deal as the one time The Late Show with David Letterman used Robotech background music or the Recliner of Rage segment with Robotech. So I guess HG has something to brag about during next year's convention tour.
