  1. Just agreeing with the concerns TheLoneWolf and TehPW had about the video. He blurs the line between legal professional and entertainer in his videos, and is tackling two completely separate issues trying to find some context. It's fine if he doesn't go beyond that since he doesn't have a stake in it. But there's the chance that there's something he missed from the legalities over the years that could come into play with the Battletech one. Then again, this is just something he does on the side of his real job for anything interesting that comes up in his field. Doesn't hurt that the exposure helps his professional career in addition to the YouTube and Patreon money (yes, he has one). I understand that he does it with the best intentions, but as an observation viewers these days have a bad habit of taking videos like that far more seriously than they really should. It's a criticism I have with a lot of people on YouTube since it tends to spiral out of control with little accountability.
  2. If people here don't know yet, the YouTube lawyer has moved on to more important things in the community (Youtuber legal drama). He probably did more harm than good by not going further with his research. Also Seto, get over it already. They are just grade S brown nosers who will always make excuses for the failures of the franchise.
  3. I suggest more people look at the Titain Comics Robotech reboot thread in this part of the forum. It's becoming more and more prophetic about the franchise's future as time goes by.
  4. I think he only cares because of the Battletech angle.
  5. Yes, but he's also been involved in the video game industry/community online at times. Ever since the adpocalypse and etc. I've wanted to stay away from a lot of it.
  6. I'll wait for something more official than what a YouTube personality has to say about this. I don't have a good opinion of those kind of people these days. Edit: I mean the full time 'professional' types making money off it or similar sites.
  7. Just to be clear, from what Renato found it looks like the reason for the Battletech lawsuit is that, to HG, the Reseen mechs and others still have enough semblance to the Macross mechs to infringe on their rights despite that franchise's efforts to avoid this situation. Tatsunoko was never mentioned by either party in recent developments leading up to that lawsuit. I didn't think it was related, I thought that people in that fandom were royally pissed and found pay dirt.
  8. Google says it was posted in a Battletech Reddit subgroup. That franchise is also being sued by HG this year. It might as well be more fallout from the Academy Kickstarter to me.
  9. Bringing the conversation back, in a comic book trying to be taken seriously and portray itself as gritty, unless the staff has the guts to take this into a whole new direction that ugly girl with a bat, who a lot of people invested in this mess loathe, care very little about in the long run, or gladly trivialize, is going to end the war by singing. Try to make that believable in about 12 issues in a condensed storyline clashing with the mood the staff is trying to establish and in a very Americanized retelling.
  10. Only after bring treated like garbage for a very long time in the novels. Seto or a wiki would know better. Kind of mean spirited 30+ years afterwards.
  11. The real spoiler is that in less then a generation her contribution will be for nothing.
  12. If they only put the same kind of effort to keep Lynn Minmay relevant to their story over the years. Or just write her off altogether and tell the story HG really wanted to tell, whatever that's supposed to be these days. I know it's not about idols, yet Titan still shoehorned her into this.
  13. Maybe to hide the fact that she's gonna save everyone with music and ruin the grittiness of the comic book?
  14. That didn't help Dynamite Comics. I think it's important to remember that people are getting this because someone royally screwed up years ago.
  15. Sorry mods, just needed to come back to this for some closure due to recent developments. Maybe it's an addendum to this whole venture . Close it if needed. After the final issue there was some talk from Dynamite Comics and others hoping that this collaboration would be the foundation of other Robotech comics in the future. I think even thoughts of a modernized retelling with some of the same staff with bells and whistles you would expect from it would be in the pipeline. Unfortunately, this was around the time the Kickstarter was being promoted, and looking back on it it looks like a lot of the big plans HG had for the franchise back then relied on the success of its backing period. Everyone here knows how that ended. Back then after that and this comic book ended one question that lingered for me was what kind of fallout was there going to be for these kinds of ideas? Was someone going to be the fallguy for this? Now with the Titan Comics reboot coming out, I think the answer is, unsurprisingly, Tommy Yune. I would not be surprised if the idea to Americanize everything in it, from it gritty tone, aesthetic, and character designs, were not just a way to wiggle out of the legal situations they're still in, but also move away from his tenure as an active part of the franchise. Sure, this might be just a one off while while the real plans are still in the pipeline, but in retrospect so was the the Robotech Voltron crossover, and it ended up being the only thing around the time of the Kickstarter to run its course in a complete manner. One last terrifying thing to consider about this series; this might be the last time any of these characters will actually resemble themselves from the show in HG approved official art. Despite having them do and say some dumb things here, at least it had that as a selling point. Every comic book adaptation before now had that to fall back on.
  16. That would be the Tommy Yune era of work that ended with the Voltron crossover, remember? I think it's safe to say at this point his ability to imitate anime was the only reason he got as far as he did here. The rest of his comic book industry experience couldn't solve the franchise's problems, which has now become full blown identity crisis with this outing.
  17. That "thing" at the end of the comic might as well be a space bear, which this universe actually had at one point.
  18. You sure a lot of it isn't stock poses of actual Macross toys that can't be sold outside Japan/Asia?
  19. Did they make Roy fat or is it his flight suit's fault?
  20. People wanted gritty sci-fi and now they got it. Satisfied?
  21. From Renato, the actual court document. It's still about likeness. just not as obvious as the Mechwarrior 5 trailer fiasco.
  22. Robotech news isn't news, hachi. There's more appropriate places around here for that garbage.
  23. My understanding was that the Reseen designs used in Mechwarrior Online is maybe for this Kickstarter game had various adjustments made from the originals to prevent things like this to happening again. Also, looking at the legal megapost azrael made, I did not know that the last time HG had a copyright lawsuit, the one of the Transformer Comic Con exclusive, it was dismissed with prejudice. Maybe it was because Hasbro also took the same precautions?
