Modernized and more adult oriented indeed. The film was okay, but I was more surprised that they had the guts to actually kill people this time around. Anyone else get to watch the Adult Swim broadcast?

He probably treats the whole thing like therapy even now, unless he thought back and decided he went overboard with the ending before.

I think that's why I've avoided watching these new movie adaptations, going through it once is good enough for me. It's not that I don't like Evangelion, it's a love-hate relationship thing, but it's fraking Evangelion! Even with new hotness and mecha, the mind screw's probably not worth revisiting for my sanity. Fool me once Hideaki Anno...

If nepotism was involved anywhere in the hiring process (Steve Yune), I'd really be sad for the series and fandom.

If HG was willing to hire someone like Tommy Yune, who at best was an aspiring comic book artiest in the beginning, their criteria for a Creative Director candidate must have been very low. Anyone know who else they considered, I really have no clue who would else would fit, before ending up with him? EDIT: I meant artist, but I guess the other word works too.

I don't see why they had to make a new character for the film series. They already got a couple who never got animated or whose story was never expanded on to bring onto the spotlight. Take for example Mana Kirishima from the Girlfriend of Steel game or Mayumi Yamagishi from the Sega Saturn game. As for the new Eva, how are they supposed to use that in battle?

I heard that he also made the Silverback dune buggy, but still. Clearly he's the best choice to helm a series known for intergalactic wars and transforming mecha. Then again, the guy before him couldn't even make or draw original crap.

Why would Tommy be a reliable source on how the VF-4 transforms? Sure, he drew it a couple of times in comics, but he didn't make the thing or create a Robotech equivalent that could even transform. In fact, has he ever worked on a project where he had to create mecha or where mecha was involved before Robotech?

Makes sense, maybe that's why slogans like "We Will Win" have become popular beyond its origins as a song; the general spirit of overcoming a lot of obstacles, inside and outside of the Robotech universe, to get the series the attention they think it deserves. Basically, and not to offend anyone in RL, patriotic garbage for a TV show. ex. The idea that the core of Robotech is a multi-generational struggle of humanity against all kinds of aliens. Also, notice how most of the characters in Shadow Chronicles are in the military with almost no civilian life portrayed. Ironically, they tend to tie it to Macross' success when the powers that be leave them with no other choice.

I got the joke, but you know how some Robotech fans think this is serious business. If it didn't stand out so much in the film only a few people would be critical. Plus, way to call attention to stereotypes about Asians and nerds, eh Tommy. Also, I thought this was a case where you don't explain the (lame) joke, even with its many connotations.

Well, sex sells. It was probably a bad time to make a joke like that even if some people enjoyed the unnecessary fanservice. But people were waiting 20+ years for that film to be an epic; among other things, to have hormones run the artwork must have turned people off. Guess they had to add more eye candy if Decoy Skull (the comic relief), Louie, or the mecha couldn't lighten up the film's mood enough.

It's funny that he blamed the people that helped build his reputation as a storyteller since he can't do well as when he gets a hold of the reigns. He almost sounds like a diva from that interview, or at least a prototype of Jack Thomson with those delusions. It doesn't help that he had no experience directing original animation before, yet people thought it would be a great idea to let him lead it. A total noob move if he thought it would be done as quickly as he edited shows. And after the Sentinels was supposed to be done, with plans for the Odyssey, a part IV, and V (over 300-400+ episodes for the whole thing), how quickly were they expecting to release sequels to the public? The cost and logistics alone would be a total nightmare.

That was literally going to take place in 3000 A.D.? I always thought that was an expression like in MST3K. Crap, it never ends does it.

How convenient, all mecha from shows made after Mospeada are inferior, cost effective, or plain ridiculous to use over the Alpha and Beta. Guess that explains why people think those ships are still the best and why the Robotech Masters overpower everything else. And their time line goes beyond 2060?

I can understand if fans want to use the Macross mecha for the RPG, but to make up stories to make it fit into the universe is too much. It might be imitating the Palladium gaming experience, but they don't really have to Robotech everything for it to work. With this thinking, I'm waiting for someone to adapt the MacF stuff as anti-Invid mecha, etc. It would be okay if they acknowledge the source material instead of relaying everything to HG. Also, spell check can do wonders for these sites. Btw, from canon and fansites, how many wars have there been now and when will they end? EDIT: Making statistics are fine to play with the mecha in game, but not the lengths the backstories made for these mecha are changed.

Well, I've heard about his original works and it hasn't been encouraging. I've also learned he doesn't take criticism very well. Robotech, at least the Shadow Chronicles part, sure did a number on him. EDIT: I think this was too much, sorry. The Mods can delete this post if they need to.

You forget, Macek is almost God of the Robotech universe and the fandom. They'll make anything he says work, no matter what in any form possible with other people's stuff.

That's definitely a trend I've seen only in Robotech. I guess the genuine ones are only following Carl Macek's example, which is disturbing since they're the only ones anywhere who find this kind of thing acceptable now. But whatever, it emphasizes how unoriginal the whole thing is anyway.

Gosh, I never saw it that way before, but that totally makes sense now. If Robotech can't stand on it's own in whatever bold new direction people want it to go, let it be mocked for what it can't have/become. Sucks for HG trying to distance the franchise away from Macross while the fans really can't let it go.

What a horrible cycle; someone offers a valid concern about something, people defend and/or reject it, a strong man comes along and quiets everyone as a voice of authority and everyone shuts up until the next one comes up. The PR guy wins every time and everyone is happy with nothing. All I can say is, "whipped."

How are you supposed to get people's attention ($$$) if you don't spread the word on the damn thing you're supposedly working on in ANY form? This is a business, of course it needs advertising.
