The Transformers 2 Thread--A Michael Bay thread
Einherjar replied to areaseven's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
If you're a big fan and well verse in the Transformer universe(s), you may not like it. As a casual fan, I went into it wanting to see action and crap blowing up and liked it. Though it didn't stop me from groaning from all the embarrassing jokes and pop culture references, especially for a long movie like this. There were some improvements from the first one; not as many secondary humans taking up screen time. -

The Transformers had names?! Couldn't tell nor cared watching it except for the few mentioned. -

Fine, more embarrassed about the human parts and whoever the retard twins were. -

Just came back from watching the film. I'll talk about it later, but thank you Michael Bay for making me feel too old. Even Star Trek didn't make me feel that way. But the action sequences were good. If I was a bigger fan of the franchise I would have been embarrassed by chunks of the movie (the human parts). -

I agree, who besides tweeners would want to watch Hannah Montana in space war film anyway? It might be a step up in her career though. From an actress who played an actress playing a singer to an actress just playing a singer, or her messed up self. EDIT: I'm confusing my tweeners. Miley, Linsey, Vanessa Hudgens, whatever, they'll all end up the same anyway. -

What does this have to do with Robotech, Miley Cyrus/tweener actors, and the LAMR? Does it make it any easier to stomach to cast her in a live action movie? -

Race doesn't bother me, age does. Especially when they're paired with someone significantly older, it starts to taste like diabetes. EDIT: ("It's still a felony!") -

If they're following the Warhammer 40,000 model of archaic extremes for the RPG, it's a stretch, it might be understandable. It wouldn't be fun if everyone in the galaxy wasn't fighting each other. If they apply it to the main series, whatever counts as canon these days, it might make it repetitive and kind of disturbing. In fact, there could be some similarities with both from just unfortunate implications. -

Here's something that's bugged me recently; what's the fandom's impression on characters with mixed genetic ancestries like Dana and Maia Stirling or good aliens in general? On general and RPG discussions it's kind of weird to see people use "half-caste" or "half-breed" to describe half human and Zentradi characters and possibly others with similar backgrounds. Even for a fictional show aren't those terms kind of offensive these days, especially with what's happened in Macross up to this point? I thought hybrid was a more polite and scientific word to use instead. -

She can't sing, but that might be an improvement. In fact, what does she do again? Eye candy? -
I expect the involved parties to continue the status quo that's always existed, except they have a chance to make some money by working together for a change.

Remember when people thought Tobey Maguire was going to be Rick, and now people want Miley Cyrus to be Minmei? I've learned too much about fan preferences. ("It's still a felony!") -

I can understand the choice for Miley Cyrus, her real life is a similar train wreck as Robtech Minmei's. She's a singer, actor (Hannah Montana), has family and relationship problems, and about the same age as Minmei. Guess they want to emulate the character derailment Carl Macek planned for her years ago with tweeners. Here's some examples I've been following on thanks to E! The Soup: Georgia Rule spoof (the last quote really happened) It's Miley! It's a felony! Vanessa Hudgens is the same deal, an actor, singer and probably a screwed up personal life just like most people get for working with Disney at an early age (High School Musicals). EDIT: Damn tweeners, stop confusing me. -
Does that mean HG and others were just paid a handsome sum, and later a percentage of the revenue, for Battletech to revive the unseen mechs?

Who did they have to pay to get that to happen?

Because if they didn't put "subtle" references to the other parts of the Robotech saga, pandering, fans wouldn't know if Shadow Chronicles was really a continuous sequel to the rest of it. This is especially true if the copyright really forced elements coming back to look completely different from what they were before. Others were retcons to justify unfortunate implications while on a strict time limit. [Janice singing "It's You" at a lounge out of nowhere] "Hmm, that's familiar. She's pretty." [shows the retcon Rick Hunter on screen] "This is Admiral Rick Hunter testing out the Neutron-S missiles before we use them for Earth (seriously)." "Don't worry Janice, We Will Win." Meanwhile, everyone else would wonder, among other things, why is a cyborg horribly singing amid all this craziness. -

Don't confuse this as a live action DYRL?, they can derail Minmei's character to not make her a big part of the plot. The focus was always on the military and how brave and resilient they were against the odds. Minmei's just a footnote in history most people want forget in Robotech. -

More likely they'll kill Minmei (Robotech name) in the cruelest way possible to prove they're different from Macross. It's a good way to create tension and drama. HG made her useless after the first generation anyway. -

With all the writers they've gone through, what's a good estimate on how much they've spent just to come up with an acceptable script for the film? Combined, it's probably not much compared to what they'll likely spend in the future, but so far it's the first expenses made by the WB for the project which will only get higher. -

I thought the Internet has been a big help to make that already happen. Up to now the derivative works that have come up in Robotech based on the original three series, and Megazone 23, and the deep analysis and information available to everyone online have done most of the work for us. It also helps that HG can't to a damn thing without someone else doing it first. However, the LAMR might be a first in a whole bunch of embarrassing plans to revive the franchise. They already screwed up in an "anime movie" (The Untold Story), CGI (Robotech 3000), animation (The Sentinels), all three of them combined (Shadow Chronicles), comic books, and tie-in sci-fi novels, why not settle for live action these days? -

Whatever reaction this has for the LAMR, HG and co. now have something new to talk about when the summer convention season starts next month (scripted exclusive report I believe). With little credentials under his belt, I hope he knows what he's putting himself into. Honestly, where do they find these people to work on the LAMR?
