The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya Thread
Einherjar replied to JValk's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
That would make this even worse than when Wolf's Rain did it. There's really only 7 episodes (the first Endless Eight) in season 2 with a lot more useless filler than necessary (the other Endless Eights and season one mixed in for the hell of it). If the webisodes had an impact on how this was going to turn out, why did they even bother with them? -
The Melancholy Of Haruhi Suzumiya Thread

What's up with this Endless Eight fiasco? When they said there was going to be a second season I didn't think part of it was going to include Even if it happened in the book, it's still a cheap gimmick. It doesn't work as well as and any other sci-fi series that faced the same problem. -
Robotech and HG License Debates

It's not even going to be released for either the Robotech or Macross toy lines, but part of the "Robot Vinyl Collection." From other pictures I've seen, 01 is going to be both the original and black spray-painted versions of Voltron and 02 being the Battlepod "pending licensing approval." It could turn out to be a hodgepodge of anime toys featuring all the licenses the company has. And that Stealth Veritech is still mislabeled as a Robotech item. -

Guess you're right, end of the Beagle MOSPEADA line is the big thing so far. I wonder how Toynami and HG are going to respond to it at tonight's panel? -
I thought that's an ongoing problem in the Internet. Integrity, dignity, honesty, what's that?

I've tried the search function a lot here and it is not as effective as I thought it would be.

Robotech and HG License Debates
Einherjar replied to TheLoneWolf's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
In the end, all Harmony Gold has are trademarks and the like over names, symbols, etc. and relatively small pieces of what they really need for their international market campaign to succeed. It loses some of it's worth when the right people refuse to work with them over a long period of time. All they can do is order C&Ds for merchandise, renew trademarks every few years, and hope the important companies eventually accept going to the negotiation table. At least, for the moment, they don't have the power to force companies like Big West and Studio Nue to cooperate making their stuff or force them to stop making new Macross products. We would've have gotten a Robotech G(eneric) show instead of MacF. EDIT: I have a bad feeling something's coming up at Comic Con to change this situation. -

Does Kaiyodo have an itinerary regarding which characters they'll do first for the Revoltech line? EDIT: How do they pick which characters they're going to make figures of?

Dammit, oh well. Gubaba's question has already been answered then. If he does come back tell Memo to read the first page of the thread really carefully without prejudices. -

Found it, but it was made before the 2004 decision. Someone might want to put a sticky on this. http://web.archive.org/web/20040806174222/...ents/index.html Oh yes, they took advantage of the copyright to make more Macross products ever since. -

By the time Evangelion came around, standards were made by the anime distributing industry regarding handling titles. Unfortunately, shows like Macross had to take the fall to lead up to it. -

I'm getting frustrated finding that address, I need to try again later. This is all I could get: Harmony Gold does not own Macross License - Japanese Courts rule ...but, Tatsunoko Wins "Author's Right" to Macross Tatsunoko Wins Macross Lawsuit If I'm reading this right, Tatsunoko/HG has the rights to only the footage from SDF Macross and international rights, while Big West has the rights to the character, mechanical designs, etc., and most importantly, the rights to the franchise. -

There was this site I found that had something like a legal document where Big West or Studio Nue went down a list with stuff like stating all the designs from Macross that were considered theirs due to the Japanese court rulings. I don't remember the address or how I found it, but that might be what Gubaba is looking for. -

That Roven is looking for projects that are guaranteed to give him a salary for the long term. He's playing the field. A show about robot lions kicking butt is more stable now than a space "epic." IIRC, the closest thing people got from HG recently was "We own everything in Robotech," used for various questions. -

After leaving the LAMR behind, Charles Roven is now involved in the Voltron LAM. Proposed Live-Action Voltron Film Gets New Producers He jumped ship for that? This might be saying something. -

If he acted like Tomonobu Itagaki from Dead or Alive fame, then he would be full of it. From the notes from the article, he sounds more cautious about spilling anything concrete in an informal interview that could get him in trouble. I don't think he expected someone to actually make a big deal about whatever he said at the gathering. -

That's a relief. For a second there it sounded like Tommy used the event as free publicity for the LAMR for no apparent reason. This is probably some vague, offhanded statements from him made at the time causing someone from a different site to make them newsworthy. But, there was no rule that he couldn't attend, right? It's his right if he wants to talk about business at a casual get together and sound like he has a conflict of interest being there. -

If you get really thirsty and don't have any water around, try snaking on some Saltine crackers. They have more water in them than you think. Just don't pig out on them like a hobo... ...it never ends well... -
Robotech and HG License Debates

These days, the only real barrier people have regarding watching the Macross series through the international ban is language barriers. Fansubs are a work around to it, but if you want to support it legally, learn Japanese and buy the current DVDs and Blu-Rays out there. It's going to be hard for some people, but if you can achieve it HG's problems become irrelevant. ... oh, there's money barriers too, just be a smart consumer. Oh yeah, I forgot the part where he thinks that when Carl Macek ran things Robotech was perfect. Even the Sentinels, Untold Story, and 3000 are perfect. His rantings these days are really about Tommy Yune and the current crew running it and nostalgia. Macross is just stuck in the middle of it. I think his ideal goal was to get Macek back to run the series, or if he doesn't want to come back get himself, Teh Number One Robotech Fan, to run it because he "knows" Robotech. One of the many things he talks about on his show is how he would do things, but wouldn't that be hypocritical because he wants to reinvent the series into his ideal image of it? -
They need figures for the Escaflowne mechs.

Robotech and HG License Debates

Actually, you just described a future where only HG wins, Doug would still be around ranting on about everything because he's not a part of the creative process. What you're looking for is a future where Doug is in charge of Robotech, basically in the same way as the big bad in the second half of Final Fantasy VI was. Uh, thank God for the Internet. It's HG's loss if they still can't keep up with progress. They treat it like it's still a new thing. -

Seriously? I haven't been to that many conventions recently, but there really has been little to no Shadow Chronicles cosplayers at all for the last 3 years? That's surprising, I thought for sure there are some folks out there were interested in doing a Marcus Rush, Scott Bernard (dirty hair version), and Rick Hunter (old guy version). Maia, Janice, and Ariel would probably be easy since they share the same proportions and clothing style. I thought there were people very enthusiastic watching it for the first time until the times forced a second or third viewing. There was that youtube video with the guy in the Cyclone costume recently, so I assumed other people were keeping the dream alive besides that fish head hat guy. -

HG doesn't have tell the public everything that is happening with the company, it's their right. You think that whenever the crew talks about it they're telling you the whole truth rather than what they want you to know or think regarding Robotech? Every company has at least two sides to them, a public side, which is designed by them to be a more positive representation of themselves and is seen the most by the public, and a private side, which is a more realistic view of the company from the inside but is rarely shown. Unfortunately, people like Tommy and Kevin speaking during official events and conversations may represent the company's public side. They've been awfully close to the fandom in the last few years, sounding like they're one of the fans, trustworthy people you can ask questions about Robotech and Macross to, and people really concerned about the fans in a very Big Brother like relationship. Their enthusiasm and optimism could be all an act to get people to believe in a future for the franchise while distracting them from trouble HG might be going through. They've served the company well if all of it really is just for show and the public (fandom) believes in every word of it. Prior to MacF, HG was probably hoping the series ban outside of Japan would hurt them enough to eventually force them to reconsider negotiations. Since they've been waiting anxiously for BW to accept any kind of deal they offer, they probably have a strategy set up to take advantage of said deal immediately after it's made; one that would catch the other party off guard but would be acceptable under the agreement they just made. The problem is that since they've always been kind of underhanded in the past, BW probably knows that already. -

HG wants to make money from Macross, but not to the extent of compromising Robotech. They still have big plans for their franchise that could be ruined if they don't use any leverage they have to prevent releases from getting out of control. That's why I said they'd let everything besides the DVDs come out first, to give them a window of opportunity to finish the LAMR and, using the money they're getting from their cut of the merchandise, finish Shadow Rising first. And you know how HG can get carried away with stuff like trademarks and licensing. If a deal is going to be made, they'll demand a lot of compromises that would favor them. If Hollywood can get Akira Toriyama to promote Dragonball: Evolution without having a heart attack from what he saw, they can probably get Mari Iijima too with enough money.
