  1. Yeah, I thought a company's business practices defines what the company is really about. You can't separate HG's significance from what it does on a regular basis.
  2. They released at least 3 editions of Shadow Chronicles during that time. At this point I assume fans were inclined to actually buy all three editions for some reason. The first just to own it, the second for the 90 minutes of extras and stuff they promoted, and the third because it was for Blu-Ray. That's at least $100 per customer. It probably influenced people to buy the original series, the $150-$200 blue cube with all the Robotech DVDs you could ever want, but they could also be including sales of the original versions of the shows too. There was also a new competing show that came out at that time, it could have sparked interest in the rest of it. So maybe their sales did gangbusters back then, but not necessarily because of Robotech or new Robotech. Those interested in Macross and the like have to go through them to get the only parts available, which means more money for them. And then there's the rest of the paraphernalia they sell. Beyond toys, it might be a quantity over quality success. Or, because the quote was made on a site that they run, just PR for disillusioned fans. EDIT - Like they would really care where and why the money came to them as long as they can use it. But what they're using it for these days is the big question.
  3. Beyond might be referring to stuff like the historical significance and nostalgia of Robotech (gateway series into anime, etc.). I'll admit, nothing can take that away from the series. But at what lengths should a company go to preserve the foundations of said series out of necessity? And after so many years have passed since the choice was made, has it been worth all the trouble for the company as well as for the fans?
  4. That's the nature of Internet forums, isn't it? The two sides are interesting to look at. However, while one side really is just a fan forum with the things we admire going places with or without our influence, the other side is supposed to be the center of an American franchise online. But it's really hard to determine if it's actually making progress on the promises they made. What's sad is that they've let this happen for years without apologizing. It's separating the real fans from the fakers and quitters for the series. Otherwise known as telling the whiners to be patient or "STHU on our site."
  5. They're like mindless sheep I tell you, sheep! It's the disadvantage of offering a website and and a forum while using them to converse with the fans on a regular basis for that close community feel they wanted to create years ago (was the site made during the dot com bubble?). Now they even upped the ante with a twitter page somewhere, so more up to date information on every minute, and I mean minute, Robotech related news they want you to know. You'd think a company that caused a lot of problems and forced other companies to work with them more for their own benefit would have accomplished more with the license this and trademark that madness they like to whip out on occasion. This is mostly IT work. Appealing for public support for this long without any real effort to show for it, for something like this toys do NOT count, in this environment is too much. But fans have clearly spent too much money and committed to memory a lot of now useless information, from all the sources of information presented to them through the years, about Robotech to accept the possibility that they've been played hard by people that supposedly care about them. I say let the whole situation build up and implode for another year, see where their dedication takes them.
  6. That's what happens when the company that should be doing work doesn't have their priorities straight. So the series will always have identity issues, no amount of trademarks and licenses can fix that. Fans are the last line of defense. Even with their interpretation of the law on their side, I'll always question their integrity.
  7. The leadership of the site is beginning to look similar to the Macross Generation forum situation, with at least one member with "connections." Why bother?
  8. http://www.robotechx.com/forums/3-robotech...10&start=40 I'm sorry Seto has to deal with people like that. I'd say let them eat their fool's cake.
  9. Where were you people? We preempted this discussion before Comic-Con. Actually, I started it as early as after Anime Expo.
  10. Technically, its spirit lives on in an ongoing comic book series, but I have some problems with it. It hasn't worked well since Sega forced the crew to adapt more from the current games as some cross promotion thing. Also, too many things I don't give a crap about and some characterization issues. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hed...28comic_book%29
  11. Slightly off topic, but does this count as a blunder? Sonic the Hedgehog (SatAM) I liked it back then, but people more into the games hated it. While it went far away from the original source material, I've appreciated it more with the recent Sonic outings.
  12. I was talking about when you take a look at the participants listening during a live show these days. In the chat box most of the people there are non-registered users. At least one of them is enthusiastic enough to actually strike up a conversation during the show, ignoring some of the faults you listed. And that doesn't include the random people who pop in derailing the chat. Unless they're really people from here doing a hell of a job. doug must have found his niche in the fandom.
  13. Guess that's true. The problem is casting. Remember Mamma Mia? Who the hell thought Pierce Brosnan would be right for a musical?
  14. Most of them are non registered users on talkshoe, so I'm not really sure. They probably ignore a lot from his older stuff. Maybe it's like how talking heads and pundits are still popular despite the crap they spew daily. He even tried to apply real world politics into Robotech at least once.
  15. Or he is an a-hole for no reason at all, overcompensating for a lot of things. Nevertheless, people actually care about him. About a month ago I tried listening to a live show that he never bothered to show up to and one unnamed listener was very enthusiastic about it. In the chat room he/she tried to motivate those still logged on to continue giving their support for the Robotech Fan.
  16. We're talking about one company that slowly churns out products compared to the dozens or so that have deals for all Macross merchandise coming out with products almost regularly (at least 3 toy and model companies). Even more so with the limited production of some toys, in this case an even more limited event exclusive item. Is it even worth going to a legal battle over stuff like this? They're going back to releasing other official Toynami DYRL toys at their own pace in the future anyway. The thing behind that is to him everything in Southern Cross (Ajax, Robotech Masters, etc.) > stuff from any other sci-fi series in existence. Material from an obscure 80's show made more relevant by someone else wins out by default, even against new stuff. This current outing just includes his passionate hatred for Macross for whatever reason, but it's typical dougbendo and someone into Robotech probably likes it.
  17. People still listen to this crap? I thought by now people know that his show is mostly for the sociopath fanboys who can't let Robotech go. EDIT: Never mind, I forgot. These days the fandom has no alternatives except to listen to his mouth.
  18. Do musicals count in this madness? They usually don't deviate from the originals unless they reinterpret it in a different context.
  19. It's a pattern similar to making up a porno name. For the lead protagonist in past productions, use a generic Western European/American first name followed by any occupation ending in -er for the last name. If they kept the pattern going, we could have seen patterns like: Rick...Hunter (originator) Jack...Baker (war orphan after First Robotech War, protagonist rescued from Untold Story) Jack...Archer (another war orphan during World War III, throwaway protagonist from Battlecry) Jill...Carpenter Charles...Miner Ann...Miller Tim...Gunner May...Herder Or any other variation that sounds fluid like Rick Hunter. Shadow Chronicles ended the trend with mostly generic sounding named relatives of characters not appearing in the film (depending on who you believe the main protagonist in that one is supposed to be).
  20. Nothing will EVER beat anything that came from Southern Cross!!! There's the possibility that this could be the only non-canon scheme they have planned. If not, what do you think they could do next? Another Jack Archer product (I know, it's technically canon)? By the way, I finally got the connection; Rick/Jack/Jack and Hunter/Baker/Archer. Having trouble finding unique names HG?
  21. That's Robotech for you. HG edited this stuff, but left all these now stupid looking mistakes.
  22. It was a callback to what Seto said about what it would take for HG to update their site. I doubt they really care about specifics anymore, especially when they made most of everything made between 1986 to 2006 not count. It gives them the opportunity to be more ambiguous about what really happened with Robotech.
  23. I assumed stuff like that was explained in the novels or comics, does anyone really know? Unfortunately, I guess that counts as privileged information you have to pay extra for.
  24. Gosh, maybe someone should pay them to clear up confusion like that on their website. ZING!!! Seriously though, information in general for Robotech is treated as a privilege you have to buy, not a right. All because they couldn't animate any of it.
  25. That's why I hate when they do the blind box game. The more you buy the better chance you have of getting duplicates rather than completing a set. Even worse if there's a secret figure. The alternative is to buy the whole set from someone who has collected them all, but at an even higher price.
