Quick and dirty single orientation scan of a GBP armor part. Lots of work still to do, but very encouraging.

I’m really hoping for a bundle, like what happened with the HMR. Otherwise you’d have to be lucky enough to have an extra 1J lying around or have enough resources to pay even more than the already current insanely high prices for another one. I have exactly one and I’d like to keep it in fighter mode on the special stand, meaning I’ll need a second one for the GBP. Or I just pass on the GBP....

I now consider myself inspired And I'm definitely getting my hands on whatever DX GBP-1J thing Bandai releases

Thank you! I still smile every time I walk past the custom on my shelf. Thanks to you as well! I've been spending my available build time on two things. The first is upgrading my workbench. There were a lot of things that weren't quite right when I started the 1J custom, but it didn't make sense to fix stuff until I could get the project off my bench. I finished that project last weekend! The second is 3D laser scanning. I bit the bullet and purchased a scanner so I could create a digital archive of my resin parts before I use them. I'm also thinking about scanning in armor sets and other parts so I can use those as a base to create more detailed versions that are printable. Ran into some issues with the scanner and had to return it. Replacement arrived recently and I've been testing it out. Here's a decent scan of a 1/55 chestplate (second attempt). I posted pics of my first attempt in the 1/55 parts thread in the Workshop section. My third attempt will be even better (I hope). I'm thinking of creating a VF-1D chestplate from this one. I'm working on it, I promise!

My first goal is to get more parts to scan well. So far, so good, but I'm still running tests. Having the scans as baselines would make it a lot easier to create modified or upgraded parts to allow for more articulation and accuracy. That is what I'm hoping for. Long live the Chunky Monkey! I need to get back to my big 1/55 customs project, too....

Nice work!

Nice Heptapod reference. I probably used Google Translate to figure out where to put everything.

It depends on the site you're trying to put the address into. The Rakuten Global Market format is the most reliable English one, in my experience. For AJ, I think I'm using the straight-up Japanese version, just to be safe.
-
Happy to help Tenso is really good about generating multiple versions of your address for you, like @DYRL VF-1S said. They have options for a bunch of different sites, including AJ. Mine looks like this: First blacked out box is your name, second is your unique Tenso ID.
-
They have to verify your identity to comply with Japanese law. From Tenso's site: "According to Japanese law, package forwarding companies must perform an identity and address verification from 1st April, 2013." It's one thing to have a company directly ship you something that they purchase on your behalf (proxy), I guess it's another to effectively give you a domestic address and let you ship random stuff to yourself internationally (forwarding).

Indeed. I primarily purchased the scanner so I could create a digital archive of my rare resin-cast 1/55 parts before I use them on projects. I held back on making the jump to 3D scanning and printing for many years because the accuracy of both pieces of equipment wasn't great. Now with relatively affordable desktop scanners and commercial printing services out there, both with accuracy in the 0.1mm range, I'm optimistic. It still helps to know what you're doing on the technology side, especially with point clouds and meshing, but the software is a lot more reliable and easier to use these days. Resin casting is still a fantastic option if you have the knowledge and equipment to do it right.

Dropped my HMR Destroid Defender on the turntable, with the camera enabled, to see what would happen. One scan only, so not a huge amount of detail, but still encouraging.
-
I picked up a structured light scanner recently. Has accuracy down to 0.1mm. Still trying to get everything dialed in, but here are the results of a quick test scan with the chestplate from a Jetfire. It's a fairly complex part with lots of panel lines, curves, sharp corners, and angles. Not too shabby. Should be able to improve the quality with additional time investment, additional scans, and more advanced data processing. And I'm not terribly concerned about crisp panel lines. I can always use a scriber to make them more clear on a printed version.

I have a backup at Nin-Nin as well. Fingers crossed that the +1 doesn't turn into a -1 for both of us....

Whether NY actually has the item they’re selling to you is another matter....

I remember when that happened. It was pretty epic.

I can look at my Yamato VF-4G sticker sheet and use that as a base for now, just so I know what I'm getting myself into. These days, the time I can dedicate to decal projects is pretty limited, with righting the wrongs created by manufacturers high on my list of reasons for taking on a project. I did that for the Plamax 1/20 kits and the Bandai DX line (I'm sure Bandai will create more wrongs with future releases). Arcadia's decisions on these premium finishes are all over the map. If extra markings are what people really want, not crayola-style panel lines, it seems like something they could easily take care of on their own by including both decals and stickers with the standard releases. Until then, I'll try to help if I can.

Sounds like I might have to make a set of decals for this release. Relatively easy to do.

Yes, I think that can happen on some kits if you're not careful during the application process. Glad it comes with a precision applicator. There are plenty of YouTube videos out there of people applying it directly to bare plastic on Gundam kits and it seems to be fine, but it's something you'd want to test on a kit before committing. Flory is another good option. Haven't tried it yet.

Tamiya Panel Line Accent Color is another good option: https://www.tamiyausa.com/shop/enamel-detail/panel-line-accent-color-2/black/ Comes in multiple colors. Basically pre-thinned enamel paint. Easy cleanup with a q-tip and some enamel thinner.

Hold up a sec. AE is offering DHL now? They've been pushing that sketchy, off-brand courier service on customers for months. DHL would be a welcome change.

I have a ring light with a magnifying lens in the center, on a swing arm. Doesn't mean it's going to be an easy paint job for me, but at least I'll be able to more clearly see all of my mistakes. I don't normally work with small figures. This is going to be interesting.
