  1. So, since the VF-25 is shown to be far superior in performance to the VF-19, I must assume that the ISC makes the craft safe to fly and the EX-gear makes it easier to control, than the VF-19. I remembered the scene in which Alto fights Ozma, and keeps up pretty well, but I remember the phrase "catch-up modded bird" (may not have been those exact words, but that was the gist of it) being thrown out there. Would it be safe to assume that the VF-171 represents the pinnacle of conventional fighter designs (before adding things like the ISC and EX-gear, or superhuman output levels). After all, what good is a fighter that can't be flown by any pilot (speaking from real world perspective).
  2. One thing I don't think I have seen in any of the information I have seen (I'll admit my only two sources are Macross Mecha Manual, and Sketchley's Stats) give turning performance for the various fighters. If it's in there, please let me know.
  3. Seto, I was talking about the Alphanumeric code identifying the engines being the same, not necessarily the tuning (my bad for the confusion). So If the VF-171EX, is tuned to the airframe's maximum, It's performance is what it is. So this begs the question, how would you employ this fighter against one of superior performance? Does the heavier internal weapon load make up for the decrease in performance? Is it's maneuverability superior to the the VF-19 or the VF-25? Or is it just supremely outclassed by those fighters?
  4. I didn't really learn about MTAC until about a year or so ago, and I missed it this year.
  5. So, as an aside, I looked up the specs for the VF-171EX, and VF-19S, and the coding on the engines is the same, but the outputs are different. I would also assume that the vernier output is different. I know that in the real world engine ratings are not dependent on the fighter's mass, so I assume the same has to be true in Macross (because physics). I also know that the VF-171 is a heavier fighter than the VF-19, so it would naturally be slower even with the same engine output. If you up tuned the engines and verniers to compensate for the extra mass, would the resulting fighter have comparable performance, given that the fighter were constructed to handle the additional output? Given their obvious design differences they would have different aerodynamic properties, and there would be a huge discrepancy in their atmospheric performance (given that the VF-17 produces greater lift, assuming that the proper camber is present on the dorsal section). Both fighters would be inferior in performance to the VF-25's raw output, but how would they compare to it? Raw speed and maneuverability doesn't necessarily translate to being a superior machine. What sort of weaknesses do the VF-19, VF-25, and VF-171 possess in relation to each other? What are the strengths of those machines in comparison to one another? If this discussion is going to go anywhere from here we need to establish a good benchmark to which we should compare.
  6. I just finished watching Space Battleship Yamato 2199. It was pretty good.
  7. Canards do not always make things better...
  8. If I led you to believe that I though I knew that much I'm sorry. That was not my intention. There was some miscommunication, you were talking about the actual cultural phenomenon, and about that genre of music in general, and I was was focused on the music I knew from macross. I also made some generalizations from popular music as a whole, not specifically about the 80's idol genre. You're right, I don't know much. Now, If you have some suggested listening, I'd be more than happy to give it a go, and become more familiar with the subject matter you were discussing, I have no idea where to begin. Besides if I stick to what I know, I'll never learn anything new. I'm not afraid to be wrong, I was a weather forecaster you know...
  9. Well, I stand corrected. I have to admit that the P6M had slipped my mind. I suppose I should have said that jet powered seaplanes aren't as successful, not that they don't work very well, because that its obviously false. Then again, Seaplanes in general are rare these days, and now are mostly seen in use as water bombers or other civilian aircraft. Their military use has been eclipsed by carrier-borne aircraft that greatly simplify the logistics chain.
  10. I wholeheartedly agree with Mr. March, but I did like the songs, they were performed well, and musically interesting. Same with Ranka, and almost all of the Macross music. The lyrics just pass me by unless there's a translation available, and even then I need to see it a couple of times.
  11. Congrats on finally getting those valks, I know you've been waiting a while, I was starting to worry for you, after all, I had to track down some of my purchases, that got lost, then found then lost again, and found again.
  12. I was actually thinking more like the intake on the X-32. Big, like the old F-8/A-7 where the nose section would essentially split the intake in battroid mode. For the SV-51 upgrade, I would think the way to do it is to over engine it, but thrust limit it so that it can power the SWAG armor in fighter mode, or charge a gun. It wouldn't be as fast as, say, a VF-25, or even a VF-171, but it would be tough, and have a honking powerful gun. Think transforming A-10 in space. It wouldn't need the boosters then. I'd also add 2 more hardpoints under the wings for a total of 8. That would be well within the real of technological possibility in the 2038 or 2055+ eras, especially if you used a dedicated gun with the output of the beam adapter and a recharge plug connected to the fighter's power systems...
  13. Good. My soul was about to be sucked into super-dimensional space and used as some entity's personal sex puppet... Oh wait, wrong universe.
  14. @Nekko, No worries, my language may have been a bit clumsy. I agree that Frontier should get props for taking the high road with Sheryl and Ranka. I also like how Grace O'Connor tried to play the two against each other while, Elmo tries to be supportive and supports the artistic side of his clients. I like how the two characters grow, if you look at the way Sheryl interacts with other characters, she is a truly kind person, and she tries to be supportive of Ranka, by giving her opportunities to be noticed, but understanding when Ranka declines, and maybe even respecting her more for doing so. Sheryl is a bit childish at times, but them so can everyone. I remember being irate with one of my friends when he shot better than I did during rifle qualification (I am an excellent shot, and I didn't do poorly, 25 out of 40 [qualifying for sure, marksman I think], and the first time I had shot on a pop up range, or in body armor, and without my glasses, and in the summer central Florida heat...) I took my disappointment out on him, which was childish (The heat had gotten to me, and I apologized for it, because it was wrong of me to do so). So as an example of that failing in everyone. No... Just no... Top Gun ruined that for me. Top Gun was a terrible movie. I think that "Thunderstruck" would be a good one though, or "For those About to Rock...".
  15. I do hope they do more than one or two production runs...
  16. You've used that comparison somewhere else, and I can't remember where, and that will drive me nuts... I do like that armed up VF-19F, really cool. Also really cool to see VF-25's and VF-171's in print.
  17. I'm a huge GITS fan, Arise, while not the best, is still a good installment into the franchise. It delves into the formation of Section 9 (maybe not the way we all know and love it, but still...).
  18. They would rate a -4.5 on my scale. I wasn't trying to hold AC/DC or knife party up as examples of thought provoking lyrics. Clutch, Megadeth, Metallica, Black Sabbath, System of a Down, Monster Magnet, Beck, Cake, and many others are good examples of "good" lyrical content because, even if it's not thought provoking, in itself, they do tend to reference current events, or mock popular culture, or make literary references, that well read and intelligent people will appreciate. That and a good beat and rhythm go a long way. The instrumentation is also well done in most of those examples too, and the Folk and rock genres tend to be more focused on art than Popular music tends to be. I wasn't trying to say that "good" lyrical content is the only thing that matters. It isn't, fundamentally Music is art, and it will reflect whatever moves the artist. If that's being Cerebral and thought provoking, or lustful and mercurial, makes no difference, it all really boils down to a matter of taste. I really like the Music from Macross 7, and Macross Frontier, because, while it's not lyrically deep, it is impressive musically, and performed beautifully, so I can appreciate it more fully, because it is art, as opposed to say Beyonce, who has nothing going for her musically save a pretty voice and a decent stage presence. Minmay was more talented, at least (fictionally) she wrote her songs (mostly). I listen to EDM, Hardstyle Techno, Metal, and Rock while i work out, because of that beat, It drives me faster, the tempo goes well with combat scenes, is all I was getting at...
  19. I have a book called "The World's Worst Aircraft" which has he Sea Dart in it. Jet powered sea planes don't work very well...
  20. Not really at all, I have to get it translated. I just read fast. I was also speaking generally, since I've listened to popular music from all over the world, I read translated lyrics, to try to get the feeling of the song, or the message it's trying to convey. I only had a semester of Japanese, but I pick languages up pretty quickly. I'll be taking the Japanese progression to fulfill my language requirements, since Japan is a huge market for Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering, and those are the fields I'm interested in.
  21. Honestly, They're both moody, brooding, pretty boys, but neither qualifies as emo, as they don't sit around proclaiming their issues, and feeling sorry for themselves... Besides, as the toy has no blood, that which was shed was yours, thus negating the emo statement entirely.
  22. I don't have specific examples. I generally find that pop music is generally inane. Some of it can be good, but it's generally bad. The lyrical content is usually shallow, and lacking in substance. Most of what I've heard in Macross is pretty good, Minmei(Minmay?) wasn't particularly deep in her lyrical content, but it was cheerful and diverting, and it played a pivotal role in the story. They lyrical content of Music in Macross has improved over the years, and it generally stays happy and cheerful, and the lyrics aren't all that substantial. Still it's fun.
  23. Gubaba, that's really interesting. I know that most fiction is reflective of contemporary events but I didn't realize how reflective Macross was. You are right, that most of the music was pure crap. I admit, that that idea about western bands, was just a passing fancy (Might make a decent AMV) but it wouldn't be Macross.
  24. Thanks, that's really cool, I'd really like to do some shelves as cutaways of a hanger deck from each of the different eras, that way I have my dioramas in display cases. I might custom build my display case...
