  1. That's pretty much the basic Idea I was getting at. Although by narrowing the focus to mainly plot and some filler, we would get to see more of the supporting characters we want to see, just by the increase in saturation due to the lower episode count. It would be cool to see where it could go.
  2. Renato, you're probably right, but it's kinda hard not to... I can't make any promises, but I'll try to keep the deep philosophical and psychological analysis and exposition to a minimum. Gubaba, I knew Ray had managed to get the valk for Basara, does it actually say where he got it? (It's been a minute or two since I watched the show, so I can't really remember, I know they got sponsoring later from Max, but at the beginning is it there?)
  3. It would be difficult, but not impossible. But no, it would be more along the lines of DBZ kai, just cutting some of the filler. Saruta, I was thinking more along the lines of cutting it down to say 36 episodes like the original SDFM. That way, we still get some background stuff going on, but not overly much. It would be a lot of work, and I have too much on my plate as it is, with School, robotics, programming projects, and other hobbies to worry about a fan recut of a 20 year old TV show, that was, in spite of its glaring flaws, a decent entry to the franchise. The whole Idea of a recut was just a mental exercise, but if you want to tackle it, go for it, I'd love to see what you come up with.
  4. JB0, I can see where you're going, and I'll agree. Kaifun was an incredibly selfish character, he's very much like Basara in that regard. Kaifun, like Basara, think that their actions are the only ones that matter. Kaifun believes that as long as he didn't act violently first anything he did was ok. He was deluded enough to think that if violence came as a result of his words it was because other people were violent, not him. I believe that he didn't so much recognize that violence is sometimes necessary, as he came to realize that he was at his core a violent person. To quote Ghandi, "It is better to do violence, if violence is in one's heart, than to put on the cloak of non-violence to cover impotence." Basara was slightly less deluded about his actions, though He didn't seem to care that his actions put more lives at risk than they actually saved (before the formation of sound force). He believed that all beings are inherently peaceful, and that violence is an abstraction. It's a nice sentiment, and is reflective of the times (even at present), but it's a sad fact that war, not peace, is the constant in human history. Humanity has never really known peace, only states of not-war. Inserting myself into positions of authority in Macross, I would have put both Kaifun and Basara in prison for their actions. Kaifun should have gone to jail for willfully endangering civilians (when he convinced an entire auditorium filled with people to stay put after the raid siren went off). Basara would have gone to prison for interfering with military operations, and putting the entire civilian population of the Macross 7 fleet at risk, by increasing the casualty rates of the operations due to his interference. But, if you can just grin and bear it through the first several episodes, and get to the part where we start to see the other characters grow, M7 isn't terribly bad. If I were compitent enough at it, I'd do an edit of the show, cutting out some filler, and shifting the focus away from Basara, and giving Gamlin, Mylene, Max, and Milia more screen time. There's no question that Basara is integral to the plot, but the first several episodes would just get condensed into a handful of episodes, 2-3, instead of 10 or more (however many, they're so painful to get through). I think it could be done with the available material.
  5. I just want a better YF-19 toy, reissue the YF-19 arcadia! So that we don't have to pay upwards of a grand to get one...
  6. Kaifun's character doesn't change as much, as I view it. His character evolves, from a self deluded child, to a bitter, violent, drunkard. Look at him during the war, he antagonized the military, sure he never threw the first punch, but he goaded and prodded the soldiers into a fight. He always claimed the moral high ground of not being the aggressor, but you don't have to be physical to be the aggressor. He clearly wanted the fight every time. He evolved, not to accept the nature of violence, but rather he just dropped the pretense of non violence, not by choice, but out of drunkenness.
  7. I think that's the gist of it, when I had google translate the page, it was really just a jumble of words. I can't really think what else they could be.
  8. I agree Zinjo. I would have been much happier if Gamlin and Mylen were the stars (in my mind they were), and I would have loved for Max and Milia to have a bit more stick time, and I would have liked to see a faster reconciliation between the two. I loved the dynamic that those two characters had in SDFM, and would have liked to see it again sooner. Basara reminds me of every hippie/philosophy professor/academic/artist I've ever met. They condemn war, and try to make it cleaner and more humane, hoping that the goodness of human nature will prevail and we'll see that art and music and dialogue are better ways of solving problems. I admit, That's a nice sentiment, one I'd like to share, but I have no innocence to lead me to that naive notion. It'd be nice if it worked that way, but it doesn't, "Warfare is the extension of politics by different means," as Von Clausewitz said. It's one of the reasons I hated Kaifun in SDFM, and why I related to the military characters so well. Roy, Hikaru, Max, Gamlin, Alto to some extent, and of course Ozma.
  9. It seems to me that 5MW 100 times a second is still a pretty decent output, considering the electric motors on Diesel-electric trains produce 3-5MW of power. Also when you compare the 194.41kj of energy that the GAU-8/A produces (which is used to swat big missiles and air planes out of the sky, and blow tanks apart), it seems like a pointless argument, since the most we ever see head lasers used for is as an anti-missile system, or a cutting torch. The times we see them fired at enemies are few and far between. Besides as as most shooters will tell you, you can have the most powerful gun in the world, but it don't mean squat if you can't hit anything with it.
  10. It's possible I suppose. It's well known that the original Skull Squadron from SDFM was inspired by the VF-84 Jolly Rogers that famously flew the F-14 Tomcat. The Jolly Rogers are still around, though a different unit has taken on the name, heraldry and traditions (VF-104). It might have come from the 12th infantry Division patch, but whatever the inspiration, it's clear that it was intended to set the Macross Frontier Era Skull Squadron apart from the Original (which if I'm not mistaken was part of the Megaroad-01 fleet, and disappeared). Interesting though. It's been pretty common among fans to dress up line art in real US Navy squadron colors, only changing the appropriate markings (the US roundel for the UN kite roundel, and US Navy/Marines/Air Force, markings with UN Navy/Marines/Air Force/Spacy ones). But maybe JVMacross was onto something, with the stylized nature of the skull being reminiscent of the Mandalorian Skull. Maybe someone else has some ideas?
  11. Seto, your comment about Active stealth being fallible, also brings a real world parallel into the mix. The argument against the US Military's direction of an almost all stealth air arsenal, is that stealth isn't required for every mission. Even the F35 (and I believe the F-22) have the capability to mount external stores, for added versatility. Now obviously this negates the stealth features of the aircraft (unless you use something like Boeing's External Weapons Pod, which is an option), which could be troublesome. The great thing about passive stealth features, is they're there when you need them, but if you don't need to be stealthy, you can just hang all the external stores on them that you need to get the job done. In fact some missions are difficult to perform with a stealth aircraft, SEAD being one, where you need radar lock to kill the air defense (You get the A/D radar to lock you up, and then you fire a HARM down its throat). If you need larger payload and stealth, and high speed, you can use the external weapons pod. If I were to spec out a VF-19F for a ground attack mission it would go like this: GU-15 Gun Pod 2x micromissile pallets in internal bays ( 12 HMM-20e missiles) 2x External Weapons pod loaded with SDBII's, or a triple rack with GBU-15's, Mk82's, or AGM-65's 2x Triple rack of AG-65's or Medium range air to air missiles 2x twin rail or anti radiation missiles or medium range air to air missiles (depending on the rest of the load out). Obviously this would all end up in external weapons pods if stealth were required. Also, what happens to the racks and rails on the wings when the fighter transforms? Do they tuck away somehow? Or do they eject them? Ejecting them seems like a waste. Now next question up, I'm interested in the VF-19EF Caliburn, what exactly makes it a monkey model? According to the info I could find, it has the same thrust specs as the YF-19, obviously less than the E/F/S it was based on, but still it probably out guns and outruns the VF-171 (Maybe not the EX, which it would keep pace with). Is it just the ease of control and lower engine output that makes it a monkey model or is it something else that I"m not seeing?
  12. So, here's another bit of a question, The VF-25 was intended to be the next generation of main line fighter right? It seems though that it was quickly surpassed by the VF-27 and YF-29, which both seem to have more internal armaments than the VF-25. Why did they move from internal armaments on the VF-25, and then Bring them back for the VF-27 and YF-29? The heavy battroid of the VF-17/171 has internal micromissile launchers, do the leg bays on the VF-19 perform the same function, or is that simply a consideration from the passive stealth silhouette of the VF-17?
  13. Dang, well you got me hooked, I'm excited.
  14. Yeah, Maybe Guld just wanted to gauge out his ears. I always thought they were earrings, seeing as he wasn't a military pilot (at least that's the impression I got, since he never wore a UN Spacy uniform).
  15. Right. I was just curious about an eta is all, not trying to rush you.
  16. Obviously the thrust vectoring will be used to enhance the flight characteristics of the fighter, so the control surfaces and the TV nozzles will move in concert with one another, but from a basic flight point of view they should have all of the necessary control surfaces, for the sake of redundancy, because redundancy is important for a military fighter.
  17. Good info, whe do you think we can expect to see it updated in Macross Mecha Manual?
  18. So variable fighters in one way or another have all of the necessary control surfaces to be fully functional aircraft. I realize that flaps aren't necessary, since there are quite a few aircraft without them, but they are conducive to achieving lower landing speeds which is always a plus for a military aircraft.
  19. When you think about the purpose of NASA, there's no need for the information to be classified, since it's a civilian organization, with the goal of advancing aerospace technologies. It has government support sure, and the military, notably the Navy and Air Force, have devoted many of their resources to assisting NASA, up to and including hardware. The military stands to benefit from their relationship with NASA, but like I said, no one benefits if the information is kept secret. We see it in Macross as well. The information regarding the threat the Zentradi pose isn't released, nor is the development of the Variable fighter, and it's not introduced as such at the beginning of SDFM, it's just a fighter as far as everyone else is concerned. The technologies derived from the Macross are public domain (with the exception of military technologies).
  20. Do ruddervators need to be in a V configuration? or can those be used on the VF-171 as well?
  21. Yeah that nuclear turbine was pretty cool. Where'd you find that?
  22. That's a pretty interesting character analysis Saruta.
  23. I actually kinda liked M7, sure Basara was annoying, but later in the series the focus drifted away from Basara, and back onto the characters we wanted more of (Gamlin, Milia, Max, Mylene). We also saw some of the relationships change, as with Gamlin and Basara, going from brutally adversarial to more friendly. As for Canned battles, SDFM had a ton of them too. Now for my own n00b question. Why the stylistic change in the Zentradi from SDFM to DYRL? In SDFM the Zentradi(Meltrandi too) were only vaguely alien (slightly different skin, eye, and hair colors), where as the Zentradi drastically changed, and all of them got pointed ears. This carried over into the later series, and only in Frontier did we see more SDFM looking Zentradi. Is there an explanation in universe, or was it just a stylistic change to differentiate humans from zentradi further?
  24. Tochiro, you raise very good points. There was some talk that caused me to go on that line of reasoning.
