Yeah, I was actually about to ask about that. So are the VF-171 and VF-22 the only VF's with multi axis thrust vectoring?

In that case, it would use the thrust vectoring in conjunction with the control surfaces to enhance its maneuverability, correct?

I looked up the F-14 as it's been a huge influence on variable fighter design. The F-14 doesn't actually have ailerons, it uses tailerons (flying tail, that functions as elevators and ailerons) and spoilers for pitch and roll control. Would a variable fighter be likely to use a similar control scheme, except using thrust vectoring rather than the tailerons?

The Real World capabilities of a VF-1 Valkyrie
Valkyrie Driver replied to Valkyrie1981's topic in Movies and TV Series
I looked into the F-14, and it brought me back to Control surfaces. The F-14 has tailerons (the stabs move as elevators and ailerons), and uses spoilers for low speed roll control. Looking at the VF-1 (and all subsequent VF's) the thrust vectoring could be used in much the same way as the F-14's tailerons, and using spoilers to assist in roll control at low speeds. -
So having a pure hydrogen slush for fuel would eliminate the need for 2 separate tanks. Is the fusion reaction the engine would use based on anything concrete?

We should assume the presence of multi purpose control surfaces, augmented by the thrust vectoring, that would make the split more even, and add yet more control in atmosphere, also allowing the flight control system to make all of the necessary adjustments to stay in stable flight. -
Variable Fighter Episode Archives

Oh, well then. I still want it, so I can gaze frustratedly at the pages of text I can't read. I think it would be good to add to my collection, given my love of the VF-19, VF-171, and VF-25.- 85 replies

Outstanding. Thanks for the prices, Maybe I can swing getting the book, I was afraid it would be horrendous, but 22 bucks for an art book is pretty manageable. Also, Y'all never fail to deliver, great work guys.- 85 replies

Variable Fighter Episode Archives

Pics or it didn't happen. The only picture I've seen makes it hard to tell. The only boobage I saw was the bikini sketch of the Chick that flies the VF-19F (I think, that's what I gathered from what I've seen, and pieced together). I'd love to get this book, how much did it cost y'all?- 85 replies

Do you prefer TV or DYRL paint scheme?
Valkyrie Driver replied to potatotomato's topic in Movies and TV Series
First, Mr. March, time I open this forum up it's automatic that I bring up the Mecha Manual because it's my go to reference. You do a fantastic job keep up the good work. If you'll remember, Roy and D.D. knew each other before they became enemies, so there's a chance that D.D.'s paint job was distinctive, since the regular mook birds were painted Wilbur Creech brown (the poo brown color that all US military buildings are painted). It's easy for a fighter pilot to recognize another pilot's particular style. If we go back to WW1, you had pilots recognize the red Baron, they may not have known who it was before he was publicized, but they recognized the danger and said, "THE RED ONE! SHOOT THE RED ONE! OR HE'LL KILL US ALL!!!" -
Great, now I want a raspberry slush... Thanks a lot...

You know the saying about old pilots and bold pilots right? I need to go back a bit: You're talking about a Magnetoplasmadynamic thruster right? It's not a stretch to sub water for ionized gas, as it is essentially the same technology, but are you saying that in space the TN turbine functions as a MPD thruster? If that's the case, and I have to assume it is, where is the fighter fusing the reaction mass? Is it further up in the engine, where the burner cans in a traditional jet engine would be? Is the fighter using a premixed Tritium/Deuterium slurry for fuel? Or does it have an intermix chamber before it injects it to the engine? How does it prevent radiation from being ejected into the atmosphere with the superheated air?

Do you prefer TV or DYRL paint scheme?
Valkyrie Driver replied to potatotomato's topic in Movies and TV Series
I really like the DYRL paint scheme the best, it's simple and elegant, all the while staying true (mostly) to the colors assigned to the characters in SDFM (Where Kakizaki got his green from I don't know). I still like the Low vis grey, like on Shin's bird from M0, and I still think that its a better all around scheme for a Variable fighter. In fact I'd like to get duplicates of most of my Fighter Toys, so I can paint them in low vis grey. -
So it is possible, but that function would not be used often if ever if the pilot could prevent it?

Guardian, Your point about headhunting is valid. Though is far less prevalent these days. In Macross Zero, the fact that D.D. and Roy seem to go at it, is probably due to the fact that they were two members of a very select few at the time, and were seeing a lot of action against each other. On that scale it's easy to pick out individuals. However on the scale we're talking for SDFM or DYRL, it is exceedingly difficult. Squadron Colors are painted on the CAG bird for friendly recognition. The IFF only tells you if it's friendly (More sophisticated units might give you more specifics, bit that's eyes on your screens and not outside). Nothing is faster than visual recognition, to tell you who's on your wing. As for the natural metal finish, from a practical standpoint it wouldn't be done. As a rule we stopped doing bare metal finishes in the 50's (there are a few exceptions). The shine was a shoot me signal, It increased radar reflectivity, and was easy to spot. Also, in the late 70's and early 80's we began to see low vis grey making its way onto almost all aircraft, and by the mid 90's a good 90% of all aircraft were low vis grey (it can take a while to do, especially when an aircraft had just been freshly painted). My dates might be a bit off, but the point is, bare metal is bad juju for a military aircraft. -
The Real World capabilities of a VF-1 Valkyrie
Valkyrie Driver replied to Valkyrie1981's topic in Movies and TV Series
Here's the way it's done IRL: Pretty accurate, though the Macross Opening looked considerably faster, Seems to me that a combat preflight would be quick though. -
Right, I was just wondering if other VF's had the capability it was shown having.

So I just realized something. The thermonuclear reaction turbine engine is very similar to a number of technologies we have currently. Obviously the jet engine is the one it has the most in common with, but I was wondering, since it's shown in Macross Zero, does it also function like a pumpjet? Can a variable fighter function underwater as is shown in M0?

While I'm inclined to agree, when they are all seen in VF-1S's, they'd be sporting their colors anyway, CAG's bird is always painted in the Squadron Colors (Hero colors in this case). So I'd have to say DRYL. -

That video on the Active Compliant Trailing Edge has curious, what do y'all know? -
So later generation AVF's have less variety in weapons systems than the VF-19? That would mean that the VF-19 would have the edge in armaments, and likely have a greater chance of killing the opponent before they ever see a dogfight.

Ok, I guess there are tons of one off mods then. Most of what we know about fighter combat is rooted in atmosphere and gravity, and pilots do what's called "Flying the Egg", would it be a sphere in space since there is no gravity? Also, how do you think the attributes of the VF-19 would aid it against a fighter with superior thrust and maneuverability? Would they instead be a detriment?

The Real World capabilities of a VF-1 Valkyrie
Valkyrie Driver replied to Valkyrie1981's topic in Movies and TV Series
Yay, another Airman! Looking at the toys, there are plenty of panel lines to suggest the Control surfaces are all there, sure we never see them move in show, but I think they have to be there, since it's easier and more aerodynamically sound than thrusters, though I imagine those can be used to increase performance. We also never really see the aircraft get preflighted, because that's boring. We want to see the dogfights, not all the tedious run up to them. There are also multipurpose control surfaces, Flaperons, Elevons, Ruddervators, you name it, that could contribute to flight control. It's possible that there might even be Active Aeroelastic Wings in some designs. Active airflow management, boundary layer control mechanisms, thrust vectoring and traditional flight surfaces could all work in concert to provide the extreme levels of maneuverability we see in variable fighters. Welcome aboard! -
Those 19 variants were pretty dang cool. It seems to me that there isn't a ton of uniformity in many of the Variable fighters. I would think that there would have to be Block and Model designations very similar to the real world, or are many of these just custom jobs?
