  2. I want one of these so badly. I'd sell both my 19's for this one (I wouldn't actually but still, this one is as perfect, seemingly, as it gets). Hopefully I can still find one after I get my taxes back next year.

If the engines are the same only de-tuned, it wouldn't be any trick to take them back to their original spec, right, maybe even over-tune them (thinking in terms of an ace or team leader custom). I noticed the animation and the toy only have one launcher port, it still carries the same number of missiles just in a decreased salvo right? The missing forearm beam guns would explain the more traditional gerwalk mode. Though I don't understand why they would have cut them.
  4. What I want to know, is does the VF-171 have all of the same armaments and performance specs of the VF-17? Is it basically that, plus some avionics and structural upgrades based of the VF-19 tech?
  5. I had never seen the Fighter/AirMech mode of the spectral series. And that's a pretty good comparison you did there on the realities. I'm an old school Battletech guy, I don't much go into the Jihad era (I haven't made it that far into the books, I got to the FedCom Civil war and pretty much lost it). Interesting to mention that though as it was BattleTech that got me into Macross (Warhammer was my favorite mech, come to find out it came from Macross via Robotech). Back to the Macross , as this isn't the Off topic forum.
  6. I think I can say for certain the one on the left is the F-203 Dragon II. The other two I know I've seen but I can't find any links to them. The middle one might be a badly drawn VF-1. /edit The one on the right is a FL-200 Mistral, according to MAHQ, but that's the only source I have that says that, so that may be debatable.
  7. Traditionally, a heavy fighter is a twin engined (moot since most if not all valks have at least 2 engines), heavily armed, long range aircraft. The VF-19 would fall into this category, save for one critical point, it's mission. The VF-19 was given the the performance to act as an air/space superiority fighter and mostly performed that mission, where as the VF-17 series was intended to punch through a fighter screen, and hit the enemy's Capital ships. The VF-17 isn't an interceptor, or a fleet defense fighter (though that's what it became in the VF-171). Let's look at the Armaments on the VF-17 7 internal systems (including the gun pod because of internal mounting), compare to the 3 internal systems on the VF-19 (excluding the gun pod since it's an external mount and the missionized pallets in the bays), add in the Beam cannon adapter on the VF-17, you have a tremendous amount of firepower, in addition to the obvious feature of the VF-17 being physically heavier than the VF-19. 11.85 metric tons (VF-17D) vs 8.55 metric tons (VF-19F). I compared the team member versions, since they are the most representative of the production runs. I hope that answers your question.

  9. Not to mention (I could be wrong), Harmony Gold has a deathgrip on distribution rights outside Japan (maybe that's just in the US though). As much as it pains me to say it, Japan would be the most likely target for such a venture. Now, if it were made true to form (not losing any of what makes it Macross) but geared towards western audiences (live actors with CGI animation) it could be a way to broaden the fan base, and they could capitalize on the success of the transformers movies. That could 1) Loosen Harmony Gold's grip on the IP, and 2) give rise to a whole new generation of Macross fans, and truly universalize the franchise. It's such a universal and hopeful story, which is kinda what we need to see. It's cloaked in war and death and apocalypse, but there's this glimmer of hope that just tugs at you. A lot of movies that have come out recently, have been dark and depressing, and it's symbolic of the times we live in. That's just me though.

  11. Guardian Grey, Which LAM is that? As for the point on cooling, Seto's correct, you have to shunt waste heat somewhere, and anywhere but the cockpit (ala BattleTech, which I always thought was silly) is preferable.
  12. I have the Alto version, and though I have yet to see any of these problems, it's good to know that a few of the problem parts have available replacements.
  13. Two problems... 1. It has to be directional, so the Valk needs a lot of small antennae for the cancellation mechanism. And with a small antenna fighting a large antenna, you're gonna have to make up the difference with raw power. 2. While it's true that this works well for modern RADAR systems, the future RADAR systems of Macross are vastly more powerful, and almost certainly far better at filtering out noise while still picking up attenuated signals. So you still need a butt-ton of power. I don't know about fighter radar, but with weather radar, if the receiver picks up returning waves it attenuates the signal to appear closer than it is. It's not going to cancel it out entirely, just confuse the radar system into thinking there are more returns or that the return is closer than it actually is (I have no reason to believe that a fighter's radar is any different than a weather radar in this regard, radar theory is radar theory). This already exists, in the form of ECM pods. You're just talking about it being a built in capability. I'm with JB0 on this one, and besides, if you did a passive scan, for it, you'd have a neon bullseye on your ship. More likely the active stealth system ionizes the material itself or a material layer, causing the ship to either absorb the radar waves, or to attenuate them and refract them. We don't really know (unless Seto has it in a master file book or other source somewhere) exactly how the Active stealth systems are supposed to work. It could be as I said, or it could generate an electromagnetic field or something.
  14. I know this thread is old, but most of this has reassured me that getting the EX was a good choice. I've had mine for about 3 months and I got it NIB, and have transformed it about a dozen times. It's even replaced my long time favorite VF-19 as my favorite Valk. It's small and compact, yet it looks dangerous, and it looks like a war machine in battroid mode. really love it. Have there been any breakage issues with the EX similar to those reported on the CF version? Was the CF version just poor quality control, and the EX just a better run?
  15. It does help, searches don't often turn up exactly what you're after, and then there's the looking for it, especially since the toy was new when I got it, and had been sitting on a shelf somewhere in Japan since it was released. I appreciate your help!
  16. Also another thought, every variable fighter (with a few exceptions) has some sort of add on super parts, even if it is just additional armor or vernier thrusters. I don't see any reference material to the VF-171 having any until the VF-171EX. Were none developed until there was a need to boost the fighter's capability? The VF-171 boasted improvements over the VF-17, in that it incorporated advancements from the VF-19 program, and some subsequent AVF programs, so was it deemed good enough for deployment without equipment packs for mission optimization?
  17. I don't know if this has been done, but I'm curious to hear what your experiences are with the VF-171 toys from bandai. I love my VF-171EX, and I've had no problems with mine, but I'd like to share our experiences.

  19. It's good to know that there are good replacement parts available. I have yet to experience any trouble with my 171EX, despite having transformed it more than a dozen times in the 3 months or so I've had the toy, and it being one of my most often played with.

I'm curious, since the VF-17 series is rapidly becoming a favorite (My VF-171 is quickly becoming the Favorite among my collection), There has to be a reason why it's hung around so long (aside from the fact that it was cheaper or could be flown by a greater number of pilots), despite being eclipsed by higher performance fighters. Is there something about the design? In M7 Gamlin continues to fly his VF-17 even though (I'm sure he had the opportunity to upgrade) better fighter were becoming available to aces.
  21. FF-2100 TN reaction burst turbine? Any idea how that's supposed to work? I know you've said the thermonuclear turbine works like star trek's impulse drive in space, but is this more true to that moniker?
  22. Biometric signatures do translate through the tools we use. I'll use some examples from my own experience. A martial artist can identify an opponent by their technique, they have a certain style. For instance, I favor gross motions and joint manipulation over finesse and timing (I trained to fight, not to compete, fine motor skills are the first to go under stress). As such I go for easy to execute throws, reaps, joint locks and chokes. Shooting, I can tell a lot about the shooter by looking at the target. Again fine motor control is one of the first things to go under stress, so you can tell the style of the shooter. You can tell if they're rushing their shots, or if they're flinching, or if they're pulling the trigger rather than squeezing. With rifle you can tell how well they control the muzzle by how wide the groupings are, or if the grouping is irregular, showing that they might be holding too far back, etc... Similarly, playing airsoft, I can tell what groups came from whom, by their placement. My buddy favors the "Nuts to guts" approach, so his shots tend to be low, while I favor high shots, typically in the upper chest and throat area. In navigation left handed people will always trend left of their target, while righties trend right. If the individual is aware, the trend might be reversed as they over compensate. Some of the experiences I don't have but where signatures translate, Air Combat obviously. Automobile racing, bicycle racing, motorcycle racing. Just some examples where preferences and style translate through tools.
  23. The rudder is a lot more important that you might think. My source (My dad, who was a fighter pilot, and the only person I know that remotely resembles an air combat and aeronautics expert) says that roll control surfaces actually play very little role in high speed maneuvering. as he put it, you "Bury the stick, and work the pedals" to affect a roll. So I disagree with the assumption that lateral thrust vectoring would be useless, in fact, the apparent absence from most VF designs begs the question of why?
  24. Ok, I guess I misread the post. Man, Seto, I don't know how you do it. I have so many numbers, figures, rules, and other knowledge rattling around up there it drives me nuts.
  25. That picture pretty definitively shows pitch axis control on those VF-171's though.
