Aircraft Super Thread Mk.VII
Valkyrie Driver replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Seconded. -
You bring up some interesting and good points. Macross actually hits on something really important, in regards to war. No one likes it, really. It's horrible, and wasteful, and full of sadness and despair. War is never a good thing, an nobody knows it better than the people that fight it. I greatly over simplified my love of Macross, for humor. As I could probably write an entire term paper on the subject of why I love Macross and the ultimate human desires reflected therein. As for Basara, I have so many issues with him as a character, because I think he was overused, and under-realized. I thought that the Gamlin-Mylene dynamic would have been a much more fulfilling avenue, as they were from such different worlds. I also thought that done the way he was, he made a lousy central character, as he was just so one dimensional. Sure he tried to gain some depth, but then he charged off into a dogfight singing in this garishly colored, bonkers valkyrie, and then it was just back to square one. He was kinda disconnected from the plot and everything going on around him. He didn't grow (as I remember it, I'm trying to rewatch the series). Well, yeah, Battletech is a completely different premise and universe altogether. It's not trying to be anything but itself. The what if question was likely drawn from other contemporary Real Robot anime, like Mobile suit Gundam, where Amuro Ray starts out as a civilian, piloting an advance military prototype, Or Fang of the Sun Dougram, where it's a bunch of ragtag freedom fighters piloting these mechs, instead of trained soldiers. Like I said, Battletech took the line art, adjusted it a bit, and went it's own direction, not trying to be Dougram or Macross, or Crusher Joe, just be it's own thing. I hope I'm explaining that so that it makes sense. Battletech was never trying to be anime, or insert itself in those worlds, it made up its own world, in which these giant walking war machines were [usually] piloted by trained pilots and supported by a professional military organization. It has it's own lore, history, and timeline completely separate from the original (anime) source material.

I did not realize the Legioss was that small. I thnk the CM's is the way I'm going to go. For those of you with the CM's 1/48 and a 1/48 yamato VF-1, how do the pilot figures compare, are they about the same size, or is the CM's undersized? That's the true test I suppose. I'll be waiting a while before I decide to purchase, as I have a scad of Macross toys to get.

True, but you know I'm right. Maybe a Lucy pinup noseart decal for the VF-19 should be a thing... The force feedback thing does explain how it gives the pilot the sensation of wearing the fighter.

I'm still shaky on how the EX gear system works. I know it functions as combat armor outside of the Fighter. I know it functions as the fighter's primary controls in side the fighter. Other than that it's supposed to make it as though you're wearing the fighter, but how exactly is that supposed to work?

DX Chogokin VF-27ß Lucifer Mass Production and Grace Custom
Valkyrie Driver replied to IXTL's topic in Toys
GAH!! I Want VF-27!! The Only reason I want the Brera version is because it comes with a little Ranka figure... Which I will then proceed to put in my Alto VF-25's back seat, and never remove her. Also, super parts...- 616 replies

I want to do a 1A or 1J custom in Vietnam US lizard camo, with woodland GBP... That would look so great...

This is why there needs to be customer feedback before the release. As much as I hate focus groups, this is where you need them.

You're welcome. Unless the VF-19Advance counts as a duplicate for my Yamato YF-19, I have not done this... yet... It's coming though. On my wishlist is: VF-27 gamma Brera Sterne VF-171EX super parts set YF-30 YF-25 The rest of SMS Skull squadron (R/VF-25S/G/F)(I have the VF-25F alto) VF-19F (duplicate) VF-19S VF-1A/J (J with GPB) Destroid Defender VF-25 super parts So yeah...

I'd do it, that's actually not a bad price, I paid about $10 less, so around that is just fine. I noticed some sellers are asking top dollar ($300-$400) for it, which is nuts. I mean I don't doubt people will pay that, but if that's what they're going to go for later on I'm glad I got mine when I did. As a toy, it has some problems, the super parts are fiddly, and leave some gaps in fighter mode, making you wonder just how much effort Bandai actually put into engineering the super parts. However, the basic toy is just beautiful, and superbly executed. They even managed to work a waist swivel in, which given that it's a YF-19 style toy is amazing. It's not much articulation but, dude, it has a waist swivel! Some folks will complain about the jointed front landing gear, but I'll take that over not having a waist, and having that awful pelican gullet that the Yamato suffered. Some of the accessories are unnecessary, but oh so much fun. The Pin-Point Barrier Punch effect is extremely fun, and the articulation is amazing. Check out this fight scene I did between Isamu and Alto, that showcases how great the poesability is! Also how much fun the PPB Punch effect is: *No VF toys were harmed in the making of this scene* If you're like me and love the 19, this is definitely worth having. If you like M+, this is worth having. If you want a damn good transforming toy that looks good in all three modes, definitely worth having. As for new stuff in the pipeline, we're speculating that Bandai will release repaints, and maybe some customs, but those won't include the super parts I bet, and those are nice to have, even though they can be fiddly and frustrating (at first). Definitely do it.

Arcadia 1/60 YF-19 Macross Frontier Super Parts WF Exclusive By T-Rex
Valkyrie Driver replied to EXO's topic in Toys
It's true. Still, I didn't buy my VF-19Advance for the super parts, I bought it for the slick transformation and excellent poseability. It would be nice to have some screen accurate shoulder pieces, with the missile launcher gimmick and the swing arm, to replace the bitsy bandai parts. -
The ride armor is intriguing, and definitely the star of the show, mecha wise. I just like how the legioss looks, like I said before it looks like a Heavy Gear mech (which I know came later and was probably inspired in part by mospeada). It just feels like something that I should have in my collection because it's different. The Gakken I think is too big, I'm thinking the CM's is probably the way I would go, because of playability, durability, and the comparative size seems to be around where my 1/60 scale Macross toys are. The legioss just hits me in the feels. I'd think about selling my soul for one if bandai made it to the same quality as their new DX Chogokin toys...

The grey looks a bit too light, and those ventral fins look a bit blue, but it might just be the lighting that's playing tricks. Don't fly off the handle and do something you'll regret. Let's wait for some pictures with less wonky lighting.

That color looks wrong. It was a darker grey in the OVA. Not much darker, but still...

What Current Anime Are You Watching Version v4.0
Valkyrie Driver replied to wolfx's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Gurren Laggan was pretty good. I didn't really know what to expect, I'd not heard any of the hype. I had friends that said it was good, but It looked too super robot-y for my taste. It was, but I found myself engrossed, the whole experience was just one bonkers thing after another. Yoko kind of stole the show for me, but Kamina and Simon were thoroughly enjoyable characters in their own right. The way the whole show goes about things is an awesome combination of real-robot fighting machine, and the hilariously unscientific Super Robot goofiness. So it was fun, and I highly recommend it. -
Cool, I'd probably go for the CM's since you say the build quality is superior to the Toynami and Aoshima. I wonder if it's due to issues with the design, and I can't help but wonder if Arcadia or Bandai couldn't do it better. Anyway, I got a couple more episodes in, and the show is rather formulaic, but it's proving enjoyable. I do like the freedom fighter angle that the show is going for, and the whole thing seems to be pretty refreshing.

Emerald Force is on my to do list, but there are just so many Bandai valks that are begging to be bought... Like the VF-27, YF-30, and a YF-25 (to satisfy my need for a two seater). Aside from that there's VF-1's that need getting like a GBP-1 VF-1J, and a VF-1A (preferably a Max type) so I have one of every Model VF-1 from the show save the VF-1D, which is hard to find, or so I understand. That leaves the 19P, which I'd love to have, but he's expensive and hard to find...

That may be so, but I think Lucy is a better fit. Tall, slender, shapely legs and nicely proportioned. Sheryl is just too oversexualized, as much as I like Sheryl, she's just not the fit for the YF-19 that Lucy is in my opinion. Also the use of Sheryl was probably a marketing ploy... You might be on to something there. Still, putting boosters on the 19 is a dicey proposition, because it's going to look weird no matter how you do it.

I'm glad that failed abortion of an idea died with M7. I thought so, but I wanted to make sure. I have a VF-11C, maybe I can rig something up for a display. It looks goofy as hell, given how the VF-19 is made of sex appeal. I think if you picked a single character from Macross, to represent the Y/VF-19, it would be Lucy...

I just started watching the series, and now I want a legioss toy. Who makes the best one? I wanted to hate the Legioss, but I find myself oddly compelled to like it. Maybe it's the fact that it reminds me of heavy gear somewhat, and some of the chunky battletech designs I loved in my youth. So far the story is pretty good, i'm only 2 episodes in though. It's not lacking much, but I get the feeling it's going to get repetitive, and I dread that. I'm hoping that I'm wrong, or that there is at least some compelling stuff later in the show that will offset the repetition somewhat. It feels familiar to Macross, while being different enough to be unique. I can see why Harmony Gold chose to kluge it together with Macross, but I'm liking it so far as a completely unrelated work.

No worries. They can be a pain. If I didn't have as much free time as I do, I'd be having issues too. The gaps in the wing glove don't actually bother me as much as I thought they would. Probably because it's still a more fun toy than my Yamato...
