While the sound boosters were highly anticipated, I didn't care for them. Did they actually do anything? -

No. They are very different designs. The way the Yamato V1 toys transform is very different than the way the v2 does it. Not to mention the arms are completely different, and IIRC (been a while since I've handled my V1 on account of it being broken) the ball joints in the shoulders are different sizes, and it's just all together a different toy. edit: this sort of question belongs in the noobie question thread.

God point. The Gun Pod specifically. The twin back cannons are beam weapons, the cannons on the arms are also beam, and the hip guns are either beam machine guns, or high speed cannons, right?

I hope to have them in hand soon, but I've recently just purchased super parts for my VF-171EX and My VF-25F. I'm really excited, didn't pay a ton for the sets either. Better than spending my money on Warhammer 40k stuff I won't get to use... Unfortunately the VF-25 Super parts were for a Michael unit, but I can just tell myself that It's Alto returning from Gallia IV...

True, but that may either solve the problem, or exacerbate it. T-Tails also suffer deep stall conditions. The wing will blank airflow over the tail at high angles of attack, causing a loss of pitch control during a stall, which can cause the aircraft to become unrecoverable. This is really only an issue in atmo, but still, I'd probably never use that arrangement in designing a fighter, since you want the aircraft to be responsive at high angles of attack.

Gotcha. Tone and text on the internet...

Umm... The F-104, was well known for it's straight line speed, and the short stubby wings made it exceedingly difficult to turn. In addition the F-104's tail configuration would tend to limit it's performance, due to it's tendency to depart controlled flight very easily. The F-104 was an interceptor, not a dogfighter, just like most US Jets at the time. German Pilots did call the F-104 the widowmaker you know... High wing loading, would cause pitch up problems at high angles of attack (maybe not an issue with the old SV, but still likely). Also the tip tanks would sufffer severe oscillations and in some cases sheared the wings clean off. Sorry, but the post 4th gen jet fighter styled Variable fighters, would eat any century series inspired valk for breakfast. The Draken III seems to be the better design. Still the 104 inspiration is pretty cool.

How did the VF-19EF compare to the VF-19A/C in terms of maneuverability? More or less? I know the EF was a monkey model of the E variant, so was it more controllable than the other VF-19's? The E/F/S models were supposed to be more controllable than the A/B/C/D models, so did that mean less maneuverable, or simply better airframe control systems? If it is done by better airframe control systems, then would the EF also have that?

Valkyrie Weapons Parity Observation
Valkyrie Driver replied to Mommar's topic in Movies and TV Series
I don't see how I was really all that far off the mark. Maybe in terms of interpolating it's versatility as a function of design, but the rest seems pretty spot on, save you included the stealth design into your mission consideration. Heavily armed and armored stealth intruder or heavy assault fighter, not mutually exclusive. That it turned out to be a more versatile base design than the VF-11 seems to be true, albeit if by happenstance. I get what you're saying about the VF-17 being redesigned into the VF-171, and adopted over the supernova valks as a cost cutting measure, and more deployable airframe.- 39 replies

Macross Δ (Delta) - Mission 5 - READ 1st POST
Valkyrie Driver replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
Why I say it was overdramatic is because Messer hops in a fighter and chases down Hayate. As for the Ass Kicking, that could have been messer taking the initiative and smacking him around a bit, and teaching him a little something about others relying on him. The way he did it, should have landed him and Hayate in trouble. I agree that Hayate is in need of discipline, and that his free spirited nature irks me, and I agree that's a liability. Messer just seems too, trigger happy, maybe?- 273 replies

All I can say about Messer in this episode is good initiative, poor execution... He was right, however the way he went about addressing it was overly dramatic, and equally irresponsible. All Hayate needs is a good ass kicking... Maybe Captain Johnson could give him some "Remedial Lessons", or get some "Blast Fence Training" from Arad or Messer. I liked the episode, but It was probably the weakest one thus far, but still good for a "what do we know that we didn't before" episode. The joyride seemed a bit of a hamfisted effort to get some Hayate mecha dancing and a Walkure song shoehorned into the episode, which I didn't appreciate (felt too forced). Still, not every episode can be perfect.- 273 replies

Or worse, golumpki (minced meat with barley or rice wrapped in cabbage leaves and steamed, traditional polish food). Do some negative G's and you'd be cleaning it out of said ex gear, and off the consoles too... (A good friend of my dad's had that before an air intercept exercise, he had to burn his helmet bag...) -
Valkyrie Weapons Parity Observation
Valkyrie Driver replied to Mommar's topic in Movies and TV Series
Well, if you look at the 17 vs the 29, the 29 seems more heavily armed. But that's to be expected from a valk that's supposed to essentially be a VF-25 with built in tornado parts. The VF-17 was (at least in my mind) supposed to be a heavy assault fighter. More heavily armed than the standard fighter of the time (the VF-11B/C) meant it could tackle a wider variety of missions without the need of different super packs. Also remember the VF-1 was the first fighter, and it was appropriately armed given the time, it would outgun all 4th/5th gen jet fighters, which was really the only enemy humans could effectively compare it to at the time. The VF-11 was supposed to be a direct replacement for the VF-4/5000, which weren't much more heavily armed than the VF-1, in addition the use of super parts was to allow the VF-11 to outperform either fighter it was to replace. The VF-17 was intended to supplement the VF-11 as a special mission fighter for special squadrons. The original VF-17 had a larger compliment of weapons than the VF-171 that grew out of it, as well. That lends some credibility to my theory that the VF-17 was supposed to be a more versatile fighter than the CF valk. The YF-29 seems to be a similar concept in regards to the VF-25. Just my 2 cents, for what it's worth. The definition I have always seen used for "Super Robot" is that the machine exhibits personality traits (even if rudimentary) and is considered almost a character unto itself. The Zero system in Gundam Wing tends to push the Wing Zero and Epyon into this category. Titles like Voltron and Mazinger are more what I think of as "Super Robot" and Gurren Lagan tends towards this too, especially later on. "Real Robot" as I have always seen defined, refers to more technical machines, Gundam Shows like 08th MS Team, 0080, 0083, Thunderbolt, 00 (more so than Wing), and IBO, all fall into this category, along with FMP!, and Macross (and I'd also say MOSPEADA and FotS Dougram). Even if the Main Character's machine is seemingly invincible, that may be more a case of plot armor rather than it being a Super Robot. Still though, I suppose it's all semantics really, and probably not worth the aggravation of arguing the point. Agreed.- 39 replies

We know he's tenacious, and yes he's a bit reckless, but he demonstrates an ability to "go for the throat", as evidenced by his fight with Guld that resulted in his injury. He was vicious in that fight, the damage to both machines was proof enough. Still, I can buy more reckless than ruthless. I'm not aware of anything that happens in M30, so I can't speak to any of that, so I was unaware of him upgrading to a YF-29. I still feel that an experienced combat pilot would figure out how to use the machine he was given to affect the best results in a dogfight, even against a superior machine. Combat performance include much more than armament. Still I can understand why you're saying the GU17A is more powerful, considering the threat that the gun was designed for. However we don't have enough information to determine exactly how much more powerful that gun might be, there is a point of diminishing returns with regards to caliber. As I've not got access to the chronicle or MtR, I don't have any of the information to draw from those sources. If it is explicitly stated that the GU-17A is a superior weapon, then I guess that settles it. I had forgotten that Isamu was inside visual range, but also let's not forget that the Supernova valks also integrated Passive stealth construction techniques, which may have aided in that effect. Also, that could have been an effect to make the story more interesting to the uninitiated viewer or a lack of understanding regarding electromagnetic sensors. Unless you have a source that explicitly states that the Supernova Valks were all but invisible to previous generation sensors. Not necessarily, The MIG-15/17 had those in spades, and yet they were consistently defeated by heavier, faster, less maneuverable, US jets. I'm not saying that the Y/VF-19/A/B/C/D is faster, just that tactics and doctrine can make a huge difference as well. When you consider the conditions the YF-24 was likely tested in, the odds would have been heavily stacked in the YF-24's favor. That's certainly true. However of the VF-25, VF-27, YF-29, and YF-30, the 25 and 19 have the closest mission profile. Considering that the 19 was slated to be the next main variable fighter (though it didn't pan out). So that leaves the question of whether or not the 19 or 22 series could be upgraded to be a viable (albeit cheaper) alternative to 5th gen Variable fighters. I know that the E/F/S variants were more controllable than the Y/VF-19/A/B/C/D and yet offered more thrust and maneuverability (unconfirmed), and outperform the known variants of the VF-171, how would that compare to 5th gen VF's?

Macross Δ (Delta) Mecha/Technology Thread - READ 1st POST
Valkyrie Driver replied to azrael's topic in Movies and TV Series
First thing's first, Did anyone notice how the Windermerean fighters from seven years ago look a lot like SV-51's? That's pretty awesome and lends some credence to fan theories about how they got SV's... Second, in all the discussion about fuel and engines, and how they work, I don't recall anyone bringing up how in space the lack of drag means that constant acceleration does not equal constant speed. Regardless of how we see that portrayed in the shows, would come into play in regards to fuel consumption. Just throwing that out there. -
He was sooo much more than that! He was the loud obnoxious clown that held vermillion team together! When he ate it they lost their soul... He was the perfect counterbalance to Hikaru's insecurity, and Max's quietness. He was the glue man... Aww, who am I kidding, he existed to make Max and Hikaru look better by comparison...

I agree. You'll get no argument from me on that point. That's certainly true, and I had not taken that into account. Yes it is. I did also state that we usually made comparisons assuming similar pilots. I don't know, Isamu is ruthless, something I wouldn't ascribe to Alto. I also believe that Isamu's familiarity with his air frame, and his combat experience, coupled with his ruthless style (he likes to go for the kill shot), and quick tactical thinking would allow him to beat Alto, despite the technology gap. But that's a conversation for another thread. True it's not internal, but it isn't exactly considered optional equipment for a VF. As for the difference in firepower, well, all we can say is that the GU-17 gun generates more recoil, but that doesn't correspond to more destructive force. Of the two guns we're only given a muzzle velocity for the GU-15 unit. Unless you have a source that states the GU-17's performance. The greater recoil of the GU-17 very likely could be the result of the GU-17 being a substantially lighter pod than the GU-15. After all, less mass means less inertia, which means more force will be transferred in the opposing reaction. It could very well be that the guns have similar damage profiles, hell it could be the same gun in side the pod, and the shell and support mechanisms are the determining factor for the need to reinforce the VF-19 arms to handle the GU-17 pod. Fact is we don't know. Well, which packs more damage output per shot? And which has the Higher rate of fire? Is rof sufficient to offset lower damage output? Higher rof means higher probability of hit but more damage means higher probability of kill. Do we have the sufficient data to make that call? Granted, the VF-25 can hide it's external stores (hung ordnance, btw, means ordnance that failed to separate, and is a bad thing. The phrase external stores is used to indicate expendable munitions on wing mounted pylons. That's just FYI, as the phrase hung ordnance usually indicates the increased potential for a life threatening mishap), better given the active stealth. Thing is, that really helps BVR, not so much if the fighter can be seen. As long as the sensors are using the electromagnetic spectrum to sense targets, the closer you are the more accurate the sensor, due to decreased attenuation, and that increases the probability for a lock. Also, the gun doesn't need to get a lock, it's a pretty simple point and click interface. Very true. The YF-29 absolutely trounces the Y/VF-19 on weapon count. But then the VF-27, YF-29, and YF-30 all have different mission profiles from the Y/VF-19 and VF-25.

I think he was referring specifically to the robotech-only fans that sometime frequent these forums to troll and cause trouble. Not the fans who appreciate both series. Still you have a fair point. No need to get ourselves turbo-banned over something stupid.
